Book Highway Transportation Re Makes America Classic Reprint

Download or read book Highway Transportation Re Makes America Classic Reprint written by National Highway Users Conference and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-07 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highway Transportation Re-Makes America Outstanding in the progress of highway transportation in recent years is the uplifting of safety standards. Highway fatalities during the first half of 1939 were about a fifth less than they were a few years ago. At that rate, more than lives are being saved annually because of these improved safety condi tions, and the outlook is that continued progress in that direction will be made in the future. Better motor vehicles and better roads, plus a driving public which is becoming educated to the simple rules of safety, are making highway transportation safer. To day it is safer to ride a mile in an automobile than ever before, despite the great increase in highway traffic. Book Highways and Highway Transportation Classic Reprint

Download or read book Highways and Highway Transportation Classic Reprint written by George Richard Chatburn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-11 with total page 558 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways and Highway Transportation The following pages on Highways and Highway Trans portation do not pretend to be an exhaustive treatise on the subject, but rather a glimpse of the vast development ofthe humble road and its office as an agency for transportation. Possibly the grandeur of the mountains is best appreciated by one who lives among them, who climbs their acclivitous heights, who daily experiences their power and majesty, and measures their magnitude by grim muscular exertion. But, even so, it would be foolish to contend that he who gets his information from the seat of a Pullman car receives no benefit from the hasty glimpse, or, that his imagination is not quickened and cultured by the experience. In writ ing this book, then, I have had constantly in mind the myriads of people who have not the time, and possibly not the facilities, to search the pages of the literature of the past for the origin and development, or to work out their present importance, of our amplification of roads and of road uses. It is felt that many of these people laudably desire a conversational knowledge of the origin, evolution and present status of highway transportation, even though it be glimpsed by a'very rapid passage through a very large subject. The primary objects have therefore been, to sketch briefly and simply the development of the transportation systems of the United States, to indicate their importance and mutual relations, to present some practical methods used in the operation of highway transport and to make occa sional suggestions for the betterment of the road as a usable machine for the benefit and pleasure of mankind. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Highways: A Popular Account of Their Conditions and of the Means by Which They May Be Bettered HE historian of this country for the century which is now drawing to its close is likely to note the fact that the people of the United States bore in a singularly patient manner with the evils arising from poor carriage roads until near the end of the tenth decade, and that they then were suddenly aroused to a sense of the sore tax the ill condition of these necessary features of civilization had long inflicted upon them. Let us hope that he may be able to say that in approaching this great economic prob lem, they did so in a manner which showed that they were well informed as to the conditions under which they could deal with it in the light of the previous experience of men, and with the help which the resources of modern science could afl'ord them. Book Highways in Our National Life

Download or read book Highways in Our National Life written by Jean Labatut and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-24 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Highways in Our National Life: A Symposium Even so, complete coverage of topics relating to highways has not been obtained. The most obvious omission is that pertaining to military aspects. This gap has arisen from the inability of the editors to find authors both competent and willing to discuss them. Thus the reader will find no mention of Vauban or Haussmann, no ac count of Hitler's autobahnen, nor any discussion of the role of American highways in national defense, interesting as that last topic would have been for inclusion. Although many of the contributors have examined the essays of others, as befits the nature of a symposium, the reader will find on occasion some slight overlapping within each general section. This is, in the editors' Opinion, not only inevitable but desirable, since each essay is considered as a whole and can be read without ref erence to others. Book The Freeway in the City

Download or read book The Freeway in the City written by Urban Advisors to the Fed Administrator and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Freeway in the City: Principles of Planning and Design The 1960's have been years of impressive national growth. The nation has experienced unprecedented economic expansion, continuing increases in population, and accelerated urbanization of our society. At the same time, steady growth in our national productivity and personal income has broadened our opportunities, both as individuals and as a society, to satisfy new cultural and recreational desires. Concern over what is traditionally called the standard of living is more and more becoming concern over the quality of living in America. This new emphasis in national aspiration and public policy is having profound implications for highway transportation. On the one hand, personal mobility remains a cherished right in a free society, and essential to the pursuit of each individual's goals. High way transportation is the basis for the unprecedented degree of personal mobility we enjoy today, as well as for the scope and dependability of freight movement. Maintaining mobility in a growing economy clearly requires the continued growth of highway transportation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The American Transportation Question But I cannot shut my eyes to the fact that these things are what business men must expect, unless business ethics is somewhat modified to meet existing conditions. Indus trial corporations grew up into power because they met the needs of the past. To stay in power they must meet the needs of the present, and arrange their ethics accordingly. If they can do it by their own voluntary development Of the sense of trusteeship, that is the simplest and best solution. But if not, one of two things will happen: vastly increased legal regulation or state ownership of monopolies. Those who fear the effects of increased government activity must prove by their acceptance of ethical duties to the public that they are not blind devotees of an industrial past which has ceased to exist, but are preparing to accept the heavier burdens and obligations which the industrial present carries with it. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historic Highways of America, Vol. 4: Braddock's Road and Three Relative Papers The French were invariably defeated by the British on this continent because the latter overcame natural obstacles which the former blindly trusted as insurmountable. The French made a league with the Alleghenies - and Washington and Braddock and Forbes conquered the Alleghenies; the French, later, blindly trusted the crags at Louisbourg and Quebec - and the dauntless Wolfe, in both instances, accomplished the seemingly impossible. The building of Braddock's Road in 1755 across the Alleghenies was the first significant token in the West of the British grit which finally overcame. Few roads ever cost so much, ever amounted to so little at first, and then finally played so important a part in the development of any continent.
