This report of the Transportation Research Board provides information on the design, construction and maintenance of both new (Type I) and retrofit ( Type II) noise barriers. The design elements that are addressed include materials, the selection process, service life, foundations, drainage, aesthetics, and safety. The construction section covers technical problems related to surface effects, durability, snow damage, and costs. Other noise abatement measures such as insulation and highway design alternatives are also addressed. The issue of public demand and availability funding is included, and recommendations are made to improve the situation.

Book Evaluating Pavement Strategies and Barriers for Noise Mitigation

Download or read book Evaluating Pavement Strategies and Barriers for Noise Mitigation written by Paul R. Donavan and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2013 with total page 73 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "TRB's National Cooperative Highway Research Program (NCHRP) Report 738: Evaluating Pavement Strategies and Barriers for Noise Mitigation presents a methodology for evaluating feasibility, reasonableness, effectiveness, acoustic longevity, and economic features of pavement strategies and barriers for noise mitigation. The methodology uses a life-cycle cost analysis to examine the economic features of mitigation alternatives, the FHWA Traffic Noise Model to integrate the noise reduction performance of pavements and barriers, and on-board sound intensity measurements as an input to the prediction model. The appendixes contained in the research agency's final report provide elaborations and detail on several aspects of the research. The appendixes are not included with the print version of the report, but are available online." --Publisher description.

Book Proactive Noise Avoidance and Mitigation Measures

Download or read book Proactive Noise Avoidance and Mitigation Measures written by Kenneth R. Avery and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The focus of this research project is the mitigation and avoidance of highway noise through a program of shared responsibility between the South Dakota DOT and local governments. Its objectives are to equip the South Dakota DOT and local communities with education and tools to implement noise compatible land use planning; to recommend policies and guidelines for the South Dakota DOT to use to determine appropriate designs and roadway surfaces in noise sensitive areas; and to define performance measures to assess the effectiveness of the program.

Book Environmental Methods for Transport Noise Reduction

Download or read book Environmental Methods for Transport Noise Reduction written by Mats Nilsson and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-11-20 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presents Evidence-Based Guidance on Noise Abatement Methods Solutions for reducing the noise impact of road and rail traffic can be found in the use of natural elements in combination with artificial elements in urban and rural environments. Ground and road surface treatments; trees, forests, and tall vegetation; and the greening of buildings and other surfaces can contribute to powerful and cost-effective noise reduction. Environmental Methods for Transport Noise Reduction presents the main findings of the Holistic and Sustainable Abatement of Noise by optimized combinations of Natural and Artificial means (HOSANNA) research project. This project involved experts from seven countries, and assessed noise reduction in terms of sound level reductions, perceptual effects, and cost–benefit analysis. It considered a number of green abatement strategies, and aimed to develop a toolbox for reducing road and rail traffic noise in outdoor environments. Combines Theory with Practice Broad in both theory and application and based on leading-edge research, the book brings together the findings and their practical use. It details assessment methods for perceived noise, and outlines noise prediction methods that can be integrated with noise mapping software. It also explores the economic benefits and positive effects on urban air quality and CO2 levels. The material is this book: Includes up-to-date results on noise mitigation using vegetation and ground treatments Contains relevant results on innovative noise barrier designs Presents data on acoustic performance of vegetation and soil substratum Provides perceptual and cost–benefit analyses of noise mitigation methods Environmental Methods for Transport Noise Reduction is a helpful guide for noise consultants, city planners, architects, landscape architects, and researchers.

Book Mitigation of Nighttime Construction Noise Vibrations and Other Nuisances

Download or read book Mitigation of Nighttime Construction Noise Vibrations and Other Nuisances written by Cliff J. Schexnayder and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1999 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report describes current practice in mitigating nighttime construction nuisances such as noise, vibration, light, and dust. Roadway construction work is increasingly done at night to mediate traffic congestion; however, this trend also increases the potential for disturbing adjacent property owners. This report will be of interest to department of transportation (DOT) construction, design, and project engineers, and to those responsible for community relations. This report of the Transportation Research Board stresses the importance of informing project neighbors and establishing cooperative relations with the community as a first measure of successful mitigation. Examples show how project design can address construction nuisances by locating and sequencing construction operations to minimize their impact. Current practices used in source control, path control, and receptor control are described and documented in examples from the Boston Central Artery/Tunnel project and projects in Arizona and Salt Lake City, Utah. Appended materials provide sample specifications for mitigation of noise and dust control.

Book Breaking Barriers

Download or read book Breaking Barriers written by Judith L. Rochat and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The most common approach that state departments of transportation (DOTs) use to address highway traffic noise impacts is noise barriers--usually noise walls. The TRB National Cooperative Highway Research Program's NCHRP Research Report 984: Breaking Barriers: Alternative Approaches to Avoiding and Reducing Highway Traffic Noise Impacts presents the results of a review of innovative strategies to avoid and/or reduce highway noise impacts. A practitioner's handbook to identify which of these innovative strategies may be appropriate for a highway project is also included. Supplemental to the report are Appendices A through E, covering terminology, a summary of 14 noise-reducing strategies, and further investigations of low berms, solid safety barriers, and acoustically soft ground; strategy flowcharts; and a final presentation.

Book Improved Mechanisms for Stakeholder Environmental Education

Download or read book Improved Mechanisms for Stakeholder Environmental Education written by Louis Franklin Cohn and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report discusses the development of a video tape and companion brochure design for use in public meetings. Both the tape and brochure are intended to explain the ADOT noise policy and related issues important to highway projects in Arizona. The brochure is intended for distribution at public meetings and forums where citizens and other officials need general information on noise impacts from ADOT highway projects. It is easy to understand and provides basic background information on noise issues, including basic scientific principles, Federal mandates, and ADOT policies. The primary goal of the brochure is to supplement the information provided in the companion video tape, and to give a permanence to the key elements conveyed in the video tape.
