Book Achieving Traffic Safety Goals in the United States

Download or read book Achieving Traffic Safety Goals in the United States written by National Academies (U.S.). Committee for the Study of Traffic Safety Lessons from Benchmark Nations and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 2011 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The tool kit will vary among jurisdictions depending on basic legal constraints, community attitudes, road system and traffic characteristics, and resources. The Transportation Research Board (TRB) undertook a study to identify the sources of safety improvements in other countries. Researchers do not have a complete understanding of the underlying causes of long-term trends in crashes and fatalities. Differences among countries are in part attributable to factors other than government safety policies. To identify keys to success, the TRB study committee examined specific safety programs for which quantitative evaluations are available and relied on the observations of safety professionals with international experience. The committee's conclusions identify differences between U.S. and international practices that can account for some differences in outcomes. The committee recommendations, which are addressed to elected officials and to government safety administrators, identify actions needed in the United States to emulate the successes that other countries have achieved. The recommendations do not comprehensively address all aspects of traffic safety programs but rather address areas of practice that are highlighted by the international comparisons and for which credible evidence of effectiveness is available."--Pub. desc.

Book Improving Road Safety in Developing Countries

Download or read book Improving Road Safety in Developing Countries written by Planning Committee for the Workshop on Traffic Safety in Developing Nations and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-12-31 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: TRB, the Policy and Global Affairs Division (PGA), and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) have released TRB Special Report 287, Improving Road Safety in Developing Countries: Opportunities for U.S. Cooperation and Engagement. The report summarizes presentations and discussions at a workshop held on January 26-27, 2006, in Washington, D.C. The workshop focused on the sharp increases in road traffic-related deaths and injuries in developing countries with a goal of providing a view of the diversity of U.S. interests, the scope of activities of U.S. agencies addressing this problem, and prospects for further U.S. engagement. The workshop discussions were intended to help the responsible government agencies gauge whether the U.S. response is proportional to the interests at stake and to identify next steps toward a more effective response. PGA and IOM, like TRB, are part of the National Academies, which include the National Academy of Sciences, National Academy of Engineering, Institute of Medicine, and National Research Council.

Book Traffic Safety Data

Download or read book Traffic Safety Data written by Susan Fleming and published by DIANE Publishing. This book was released on 2010-10 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traffic crashes kill or injure millions of people each year. High-quality traffic safety data is vital to allocate resources and target programs as the National Highway Traffic Safety Admin, (NHTSA) and states work to improve traffic safety through data-driven approaches. To qualify for federal funding, states must submit plans which include fatality and crash data analyses to identify areas for improvement. This report provides information on: (1) the extent to which state traffic safety data systems meet NHTSA performance measures for assessing the quality of data systems; and (2) progress states have made in improving traffic safety data systems, and related challenges. Includes recommendations. Charts and tables.
