Book Highway Rockfall Research

Download or read book Highway Rockfall Research written by Bruce K. Stover and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This research project is directed at developing and demonstrating a system for cost effectively evaluating and prioritizing highway rockfall hazards statewide. This pilot study produced a prototype computer-based highway rockfall hazard ranking system - "CRASH", which can be used to identify those areas of the state's highway system which have the highest incidences of rockfall accidents, as well as any area which has had a reported rockfall accident since 1976. The existing Oregon rockfall hazard ranking system (ODOT system) was selected and studied to determine if it addressed the varied geologic as well as physical rockfall situations in Colorado. This system was adapted to suit the requirements of our prototype hazard ranking scheme. Implementation of the Highway Rockfall Hazard Evaluation system was demonstrated on five pre-selected areas. The mile in each area with the highest number of reported rockfall accidents, as determined by "CRASH", was ranked using the ODOT system

Book excerpt: This proceedings contains 89 papers from 25 countries and regions, including 14 keynote lectures and 17 invited lectures, presented at the Third International Conference on Geotechnical Engineering for Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation (3ICGEDMAR 2011) together with the Fifth International Conference on Geotechnical & Highway Engineering (5ICGHE), which was held in Semarang, Indonesia, from 18 to 20 May 2011. This is the third conference in the GEDMAR conference series. The first was held in Singapore from 12 to 13 December 2005 and the second in Nanjing, China, from 30 May to 2 June 2008. The proceedings is divided into three sections: keynote papers, invited papers and conference papers under which there are six sub-sections: Case Studies on Recent Disasters; Soil Behaviours and Mechanisms for Hazard Analysis; Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation Techniques; Risk Analysis and Geohazard Assessment; Innovation Foundations for Rail, Highway, and Embankments; and Slope Failures and Remedial Measures. The conference is held under the auspices of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) Technical Committee TC-303: Coastal and River Disaster Mitigation and Rehabilitation, TC-203: Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering and Associated Problems, TC-302: Forensic Geotechnical Engineering, TC-304: Engineering Practice of Risk Assessment and Management, TC-213: Geotechnics of Soil Erosion, TC-202: Transportation Geotechnics, TC-211: Ground Improvement, Southeast Asian Geotechnical Society (SEAGS), Association of Geotechnical Societies in Southeast Asia (AGSSEA), and Road Engineering Association of Asia & Australasia (REAAA).

Book Deformation and Progressive Failure in Geomechanics

Download or read book Deformation and Progressive Failure in Geomechanics written by A. Asaoka and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1997-10-23 with total page 956 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progressive failure has been a classical problem in the field of geotechnical engineering and has attracted considerable attention in connection with slope stability and foundation problems. It is associated with strain localization or shear banding and is also related to damage in material structures. As knowledge of the progressive failure mechanism increases, it is now necessary to establish effective communications between researchers and engineers. The International Symposium on Deformation and Progressive Failure in Geomechanics provided an opportunity for discussing recent advances in this area. A total of 136 papers were contributed from 22 countries. As well as these, the symposium proceedings also contain 8 interim technical reports on the subject by the members of the Asian Technical Committee of the International Society for Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering and the Japanese Geotechnical Society National Committee on Progressive Failure in Geo-structures.

Book Project Planning and Project Success

Download or read book Project Planning and Project Success written by Pedro Serrador and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2014-11-24 with total page 922 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Project planning is generally accepted as an important contributor to project success. However, is there research that affirms the positive impact of project planning and gives guidance on how much effort should be spent on planning? To answer these questions, this book looks at current literature and new research of this under-studied area of project management. The author presents his findings from an extensive review of project planning literature that covers more than 270 sources. He also discusses new research that analyzes data from more than 1,300 global projects. The book confirms that the time spent on planning activities reduces risk and significantly increases the chances of project success. It also concludes that there can be too much planning and shows that the optimum ratio of planning to effort is 25%. The book examines the impact of project planning on different industries. It discusses research in the construction and information technology (IT) industries, and presents a case study of how to plan and track a software development project. The book also looks at the impact of geography on project planning and success. Intended as a basic tool in the library of any project manager or general manager, this book brings to light project planning techniques and information that have never been published previously. It is an important resource on how to plan projects properly and propel your career forward.

Book Policing the Fringe

Download or read book Policing the Fringe written by Charles Scheideman and published by Harbour Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-28 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the 1960s through the 1980s, RCMP Sergeant Charlie Scheideman spent much of his time patrolling the "dark corners of the Interior of British Columbia" where "the citizens would meet the modern criteria for redneck: if their veranda collapsed it would kill more than four dogs; they think 'harrass' is two words, and so on." Such places weren't much fun to police but they were full of characters, many of whom make their way into Charlie's entertaining book, Policing the Fringe. We meet Walter and Wilbur, two Hixon hillbillies who went on a bender and decided it would be fun to stagger out onto the Cariboo Highway with a rifle and hold up passing cars, which worked well enough until they held up a motorhome from Alaska that turned out to be better armed than they were. We meet Petre, the hard-working hermit who was cheated out of his savings by three slick-talking mining promoters and waited to take his revenge—with an axe. With wry humour and a policeman's eye for relevant detail, Scheideman recounts events that range from the ridiculous to the horrific to the tragic. Once he stopped a car in the Fraser Canyon driven by three normally responsible American fishermen, who on this occasion were careening wildly from one guard rail to another. Their defence? They had failed to allow for the added kick of Canadian beer. His most searing memory was of waiting for the embers of a burned house to cool enough so he could retrieve the bodies of two small victims while in a nearby house, party-goers kept right on partying. One of the most revealing accounts ever written about policing in small-town Canada, this book bristles with unforgettable stories about the author's 27 years working on the RCMP's front lines. It will give readers new respect for the men and women who patrol Canada’s backroads—both because of the extremely taxing work they do and the good spirit with which they do it.
