Book excerpt: The subjects sat in a driving simulator and watched a motion of a construction work area that was taken through the windshield of an automobile as the subjects "drove." Simulated radio messages were given that described the features of the work area. Subjects had to indicate their preference between a longer detailed message and a shorter general message format. The messages were presented at three different times before the construction area on the film began. A questionnaire was used to elicit the responses from the subjects.

Book excerpt: The Virginia Department of Highways and Transportation utilized an advisory radio to advise motorists of possible delays caused by resurfacing operations on a major interstate highway and to give information concerning the use of an available detour. This report describes an evaluation of the effectiveness of the radio unit on the basis of the use made of the radio messages by motorists and the effect of the messages on traffic flow through the maintenance area and available detour. The results of traffic counts, time delay runs, and a motorist survey indicated that the unit used was not fully effective because of the inability of motorists to tune in the frequency or to hear or understand the message; however, it is felt that the concept of the highway advisory radio has good potential as a source of information and possible aid to motorists.

Book excerpt: The project involved the installation of Highway Advisory Radio (HAR) transmitters in Baton Rouge and Lake Charles. The transmitter sites were located at key entry points to each metropolitan area. At the conclusion of the project all seven of the transmitter units were fully broadcast capable. They were, however, somewhat limited in terms of timeliness of broadcast information due to the lack of real-time traffic data and manpower limitations required to operate the system. The project included a review of literature and practices related to the development and application of HAR systems in the United States to address the applicability of existing commercially available HAR systems as well as the specific planning, placement, and operational requirements necessary to implement an effective HAR system.
