Download or read book Hidden History of the Dark Corner written by Drew Hines and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2024-03-18 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The "Dark" in the Dark Corner Years ago, when travelers to northern Greenville County asked a local where the Dark Corner was, invariably their reply was, "Just a little further up the road." In those days few people wanted to admit they lived in that much storied and much maligned part of the county known as the Dark Corner. The Dark Corner in those days was legendary for its moonshine, murder and mayhem. This is the story of that well-known region. We travel back to the Dark Corner's earliest days when its only human inhabitants were the Cherokee, and we move into the present where horse farms and multi-million-dollar homes dot the countryside that once contained moonshine stills and cornfields.

Download or read book High skilled Migration written by Mathias Czaika and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2018 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political and scientific debates on migration policies have mostly focused on governments' efforts to control or reduce low-skilled, asylum, and irregular migration or to encourage the return migration of these categories. Less research and constructive discourse has been conducted on the role and effectiveness of policies to attract or retain high-skilled workers. An improved understanding of the drivers and dynamics of high-skilled migration is essential for effective policy-making, as most highly developed and emerging economies experience growing shortages of high-skilled labour supply in certain occupations and sectors, and skilled immigration is often viewed as one way of addressing these. Simplistic assumptions that high-skilled migrants are primarily in pursuit of higher wages raise the expectation that policies which open channels for high-skilled immigration are generally successful. Although many countries have introduced policies aimed at attracting and facilitating the recruitment of high-skilled workers, not all recruitment efforts have had the desired effects, and anecdotal evidence on the effectiveness of these programmes is rather mixed. The reason is that the rather narrow focus on migration policy coincides with a lack of systematic and rigorous consideration of other economic, social, and political drivers of migration, which may be equally - or sometimes even more - important than migration policies per se. A better understanding of migration policies, their making, consequences and limitations, requires a systematic knowledge of the broader economic, social and political structures and their interaction in both origin and destination countries. This book enhances this vibrant field of social scientific enquiry by providing a systematic, multidisciplinary, and global analysis of policies driving international high-skilled migration processes in their interaction with other migration drivers at the individual, city, national, and international level.

Download or read book Recent Trends in International Migration of Doctors Nurses and Medical Students written by OECD and published by OECD Publishing. This book was released on 2019-07-25 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes recent trends in the international migration of doctors and nurses in OECD countries. Over the past decade, the number of doctors and nurses has increased in many OECD countries, and foreign-born and foreign-trained doctors and nurses have contributed to a significant extent. New in-depth analysis of the internationalisation of medical education shows that in some countries (e.g. Israel, Norway, Sweden and the United States) a large and growing number of foreign-trained doctors are people born in these countries who obtained their first medical degree abroad before coming back. The report includes four case studies on the internationalisation of medical education in Europe (France, Ireland, Poland and Romania) as well as a case study on the integration of foreign-trained doctors in Canada.
Download or read book Country Doctor Hilarious True Stories from a Rural Practice written by Michael Sparrow and published by Prelude Books. This book was released on 2020-02-20 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Have you ever had to decide what to do with an unidentified corpse by a Devonian cowshed when the herd is due in for milking? And how would you react if one of your patients was abducted by aliens? If you are a GP it seems these are routine matters. From coping with the suicide of a colleague to the unusual whereabouts of a jar of Coleman's mustard, this is the story of one rural doctor's often misguided attempts to make sense of the career in which he has unwittingly found himself. Dr Sparrow's adventures would be utterly unbelievable were they not 100% true stories. His bedside manner may sometimes leave a little to be desired but, if you're in dire straits, this doctor will have you in stitches.
Download or read book This Restless Life written by Brigid Delaney and published by Melbourne Univ. Publishing. This book was released on 2009 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We often live in transit, shifting between jobs, cities and countries, trying to build communities in a virtual world, but longing - maybe before dropping off to sleep at night - for some stronger connection. The savage playground of speed dating. High-risk, low-loyalty workplaces, scattered around the world. Friendships and love affairs conducted through technology. Globalisation and the long boom have changed the way young people love, work and travel. In This Restless Life, journalist Brigid Delaney looks at the impact that hyper-mobility and the excesses of consumer culture have had on the restless generation. She hears stories from young Australians in the departure lounges of outer London airports, at parties in Rome and Sydney, in the caf s of Berlin and Paris. They feel 'nation-stateless', adrift. Their affluence in the new economy has come at a cost. Having lived the restless life herself - fifteen cities over the past fifteen years - Delaney laments the loss of the things that for previous generations held life together, like romantic love, full-time permanent work and real-world communities. But just as the pace of the new economy changed us into restless human beings, might the global financial crisis provide this generation with an opportunity to slow down and reassess how it might live?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a world of HMOs, insurance companies, and an endless flood of forms, Hull Cook reminds us that there was a time when a visit to the doctor's office cost three dollars and doctors still made house calls. Cook recounts fifty years of service as a rural doctor in Texas and Nebraska, where a wide spectrum of dilemmas tested his resourcefulness, endurance, and sense of humor. He describes helping to deliver a baby via telephone during the Blizzard of '49, and he explains his "special delivery" of medication in the dead of winter-an operation involving his Beechcraft Bonanza airplane and a p.
