Download or read book Regulating Gun Sales written by Daniel W Webster and published by Johns Hopkins University Press+ORM. This book was released on 2013-03-26 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This excerpt from the “masterful, timely, data-driven” study of the gun control debate examines the potential of stronger purchasing laws (Choice). As the debate on gun control continues, evidence-based research is needed to answer a crucial question: How do we reduce gun violence? One of the biggest gun policy reforms under consideration is the regulation of firearm sales and stopping the diversion of guns to criminals. This selection from the major anthology of studies Reducing Gun Violence in America presents compelling evidence that stronger purchasing laws and better enforcement of these laws result in lower gun violence. Additional material for this edition includes an introduction by Michael R. Bloomberg and Consensus Recommendations for Reforms to Federal Gun Policies from the Johns Hopkins University.

Book Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm Related Violence

Download or read book Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm Related Violence written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2013-10-03 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 2010, more than 105,000 people were injured or killed in the United States as the result of a firearm-related incident. Recent, highly publicized, tragic mass shootings in Newtown, CT; Aurora, CO; Oak Creek, WI; and Tucson, AZ, have sharpened the American public's interest in protecting our children and communities from the harmful effects of firearm violence. While many Americans legally use firearms for a variety of activities, fatal and nonfatal firearm violence poses a serious threat to public safety and welfare. In January 2013, President Barack Obama issued 23 executive orders directing federal agencies to improve knowledge of the causes of firearm violence, what might help prevent it, and how to minimize its burden on public health. One of these orders directed the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to, along with other federal agencies, immediately begin identifying the most pressing problems in firearm violence research. The CDC and the CDC Foundation asked the IOM, in collaboration with the National Research Council, to convene a committee tasked with developing a potential research agenda that focuses on the causes of, possible interventions to, and strategies to minimize the burden of firearm-related violence. Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence focuses on the characteristics of firearm violence, risk and protective factors, interventions and strategies, the impact of gun safety technology, and the influence of video games and other media.

Book excerpt: The colourful early history of the breed is here vividly told, while in the chapters dealing with breeding, rearing, exhibiting, field trials and police work the comments of leading fanciers will be found of great value to the novice owner and indeed to labrador lovers of longer standing. The book is well illustrated with photographs and it contains some striking and hitherto unrecorded instances of Labrador intelligence and sagacity. "The Labrador owes its renown not to any passing whim of fashion. It has come about through the gradual realisation by dog-lovers of the high endowment of brains, beauty and honest-to-goodness desire to please, which has been increasingly shown through several decades by this grand companion of field and fireside, who has so convincingly demonstrated his right to be acknowledged as the prince of gun-dog, and first-rate friend and guard into the bargain." Contents Include : The History of the Labrador; Hints on Breeding Labradors; The Labrador Puppy; The Labrador Retriever; Training to Retrieve; Preparation for Show and Field Trial; The Labrador Retriever Club's Rules for Field Trial; Meetings; The Labrador as Police Dog; First Aid; Hints; A Labrador Glossary.

Book The War Play Dilemma

    Book Details:
  • Author : Diane E. Levin
  • Publisher : Teachers College Press
  • Release : 2006
  • ISBN : 9780807746387
  • Pages : 150 pages

Download or read book The War Play Dilemma written by Diane E. Levin and published by Teachers College Press. This book was released on 2006 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As violence in the media and media-linked toys increases, parents and teachers are also seeing an increase in children's war play. The authors have revised this popular text to provide more practical guidance for working with children to promote creative play, and for positively influencing the lessons about violence children are learning. Using a developmental and sociopolitical viewpoint, the authors examine five possible strategies for resolving the war play dilemma and show which best satisfy both points of view: banning war play; taking a laissez-faire approach; allowing war play with specified limits; actively facilitating war play; and limiting war play while providing alternative ways to work on the issues. New for the Second Edition are: more anecdotal material about adults'' and children's experiences with war play, including examples from both home and school settings; greater emphasis on the impact of media and commercialization on children's war play, including recent trends in media, programming, marketing, and war toys; expanded discussion about the importance of the distinction between imitative and creative war play; and summary boxes of key points directed at teachers or parents. * New information about violent video games, media cross feeding, and gender development and sex-role stereotyping.
