Book The Semantics and Metaphysics of Natural Kinds

Download or read book The Semantics and Metaphysics of Natural Kinds written by Helen Beebee and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-05-05 with total page 509 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentialism--roughly, the view that natural kinds have discrete essences, generating truths that are necessary but knowable only a posteriori--is an increasingly popular view in the metaphysics of science. At the same time, philosophers of language have been subjecting Kripke’s views about the existence and scope of the necessary a posteriori to rigorous analysis and criticism. Essentialists typically appeal to Kripkean semantics to motivate their radical extension of the realm of the necessary a posteriori; but they rarely attempt to provide any semantic arguments for this extension, or engage with the critical work being done by philosophers of language. This collection brings authors on both sides together in one volume, thus helping the reader to see the connections between views in philosophy of language on the one hand and the metaphysics of science on the other. The result is a book that will have a significant impact on the debate about essentialism, encouraging essentialists to engage with debates about the semantic presuppositions that underpin their position, and, encouraging philosophers of language to engage with the metaphysical presuppositions enshrined in Kripkean semantics.

Book Roadless Rules

Download or read book Roadless Rules written by Tom Turner and published by Island Press. This book was released on 2010-04-14 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Roadless Rules is a fast-paced and insightful look at one of the most important, wide-ranging, and controversial efforts to protect public forests ever undertaken in the United States. In January 2000, President Clinton submitted to the Federal Register the Roadless Area Conservation Rule, prohibiting road construction and timber harvesting in designated roadless areas. Set to take effect sixty days after Clinton left office, the rule was immediately challenged by nine lawsuits from states, counties, off-road-vehicle users, and timber companies. The Bush administration refused to defend the rule and eventually sought to replace it with a rule that invited governors to suggest management policies for forests in their states. That rule was attacked by four states and twenty environmental groups and declared illegal. Roadless Rules offers a fascinating overview of the creation of the Clinton roadless rule and the Bush administration’s subsequent replacement rule, the controversy generated, the response of the environmental community, and the legal battles that continue to rage more than seven years later. It explores the value of roadless areas and why the Clinton rule was so important to environmentalists, describes the stakeholder groups involved, and takes readers into courtrooms across the country to hear critical arguments. Author Tom Turner considers the lessons learned from the controversy, arguing that the episode represents an excellent example of how the system can work when all elements of the environmental movement work together—local groups and individuals determined to save favorite places, national organizations that represent local interests but also concern themselves with national policies, members of the executive branch who try to serve the public interest but need support from outside, and national organizations that use the legal system to support progress achieved through legislation or executive action.

Book Guilty Admissions

  • Author : Nicole LaPorte
  • Publisher : Hachette UK
  • Release : 2021-02-23
  • ISBN : 1538717085
  • Pages : 336 pages

Download or read book Guilty Admissions written by Nicole LaPorte and published by Hachette UK. This book was released on 2021-02-23 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This entertaining exposé on how the other half gets in tells the shockingly true story of the Varsity Blues scandal, and all of the crazy parents, privilege, and con men involved. Guilty Admissions weaves together the story of an unscrupulous college counselor named Rick Singer, and how he preyed on the desperation of some of the country's wealthiest families living in a world defined by fierce competition, who function under constant pressure to get into the "right" schools, starting with pre-school; non-stop fundraising and donation demands in the form of multi-million-dollar galas and private parties; and a community of deeply insecure parents who will do anything to get their kids into name-brand colleges in order to maintain their own A-list status. Investigative reporter Nicole LaPorte lays bare the source of this insecurity—that in 2019, no special "hook" in the form of legacy status, athletic talent, or financial giving can guarantee a child's entrance into an elite school. The result is paranoia, deception, and true crimes at the peak of the American social pyramid. With a glittering cast of Hollywood actors—including Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin—hedge fund CEOs, sales executives, and media titans, Guilty Admissions is a soap-opera-slash-sneak-peek-behind-the-curtains at America's richest social circles; an examination of the cutthroat world of college admissions; and a parable of American society in 2019, when the country is run by a crass tycoon and all totems of status and achievement have become transactional and removed from traditions of ethical restraint. A world where the rich get whatever they want, however they want it.

Book Triple Jeopardy

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dr. Rita Ali
  • Publisher : Outskirts Press
  • Release : 2020-03-04
  • ISBN : 1732936811
  • Pages : 457 pages

Download or read book Triple Jeopardy written by Dr. Rita Ali and published by Outskirts Press. This book was released on 2020-03-04 with total page 457 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Triple Jeopardy is a book about resilience written in a powerful, inspiring way. It’s a wakeup call that iterates that you are in control of your own story, no matter the circumstances. ~ Mike Tyson, Former Undisputed Boxing Champion, Best Selling Author, Actor WOW! Triple Jeopardy is a remarkable story that reveals intimate details about the author and her family’s encounter with the criminal justice system. It is emotionally moving, enlightening, thought-provoking, informative, even humorous at times and provides valuable life lessons. This book is a must-read from start to finish. ~ Flavor Flav, Hip-hop Rapper “When I first met Rita Ali, I had just begun working with Mike Tyson on his autobiography, Undisputed Truth. I was far away from my wife and dog back in New York, but Rita, Mike’s mother-in-law, immediately adopted me and made me feel welcome and, ultimately, one of the family. Each day I had some time to kill waiting for Mike to finish up some other business or tend to his pigeons until we could resume our taped interviews, and Rita helped to fill the time by regaling me with stories of her life back in Philadelphia. She had willed herself into being one of the few females to penetrate the world of boxing, first as a reporter and later as a publicist. Her stories of her interactions with Muhammad Ali, Don King, Joe Frazier, were so compelling that I urged her to write her own book! And I suggested it even more forcefully after she related to me the sordid details of her and her family’s persecution by the federal government for crimes that they didn’t commit. Rita went to work and now we have Triple Jeopardy. But rather than being a “woe-is-me” account, her memoir is an empowering document that proves the old adage that you can’t keep a good woman down. You’ll enjoy the anecdotes of the rich and famous celebrities that Rita has crossed paths with but you’ll have to admire the strength, discipline and wisdom that Rita imparts when recounting an overzealous prosecution gone awry. Far from broken, Rita and her lovely family have risen from the ashes of defamation like Phoenixes. “Their story is a cautionary tale that shows that it CAN happen here. And does.” ~ Larry “Ratso” Sloman, co-author with Mike Tyson of Undisputed Truth and Iron Ambition: My Life with Cus D’Amato http://www.ratso.org A woman who has always exhibited beauty, strength and grace, in her memoir Triple Jeopardy, Rita Ali proves that you can always knock-out the opposition. ~ Michael Spinks, Olympic Gold Medalist, Two Division World Champion
