Book Gravitation and Cosmology

Download or read book Gravitation and Cosmology written by Steven Weinberg and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1972 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Weinberg's 1972 work, in his description, had two purposes. The first was practical to bring together and assess the wealth of data provided over the previous decade while realizing that newer data would come in even as the book was being printed. He hoped the comprehensive picture would prepare the reader and himself to that new data as it emerged. The second was to produce a textbook about general relativity in which geometric ideas were not given a starring role for (in his words) too great an emphasis on geometry can only obscure the deep connections between gravitation and the rest of physics.

Book Gravitational Waves and Cosmology

Download or read book Gravitational Waves and Cosmology written by E. Coccia and published by IOS Press. This book was released on 2020-08-31 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The past twenty years have seen a number of breakthroughs in astrophysics and cosmology, some of which have been awarded Nobel prizes. These physics triumphs highlight the fact that while students need a solid grounding in the fundamentals of astrophysics and cosmology, sight of the basics of the fundamental interactions in physics must not be lost. This book presents papers based on lectures given at the 200th Course of the International School of Physics “Enrico Fermi”, on Gravitation and Cosmology, held in Varenna, Italy, from 3 - 12 July 2017. The aim of the school was to expose students to state-of-the-art research in the field of gravitational waves and cosmology, from both a theoretical and experimental point of view. Lectures were organized in such a way as to foster interaction between the two communities, and a wide range of topics was addressed. In the gravitational waves section, topics covered include experimental issues connected with gravitational wave detection and the new field of multi-messenger astronomy, as well as more astrophysical aspects. In the section on cosmology, there are contributions on the early universe, on the cosmic microwave background (CMB) and on redshift surveys. Other areas covered include a review of inflationary scenarios; the non-Gaussian features of primordial density fluctuations; and the physical mechanisms responsible for the spectral distortions of the blackbody spectrum of the CMB. The book provides an overview of important research developments and will be of interest to all students of gravitation and cosmology.

Download or read book Relativity Gravitation and Cosmology written by Robert J. Lambourne and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The textbook introduces students to basic geometric concepts, such as metrics, connections and curvature, before examining general relativity in more detail. It shows the observational evidence supporting the theory, and the description general relativity provides of black holes and cosmological spacetimes. --

Book Global Aspects in Gravitation and Cosmology

Download or read book Global Aspects in Gravitation and Cosmology written by Pankaj S. Joshi and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1996 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic to the entire theory and applications of black hole physics Global Aspects in Gravitation and Cosmology covers the topics needed to understand the current key issues in gravitation theory: cosmology and black holes. Emphasized is the basic theme that the very nature of the gravitationalfield is such that global features of space-time inevitably come into play whenever we try to understand and interpret this force in detail. After discussing the fundamental role played by global considerations in gravity and general relativity, Joshi points out the significant problems that remain. The key problem of which been the issue of quantum effects in strong gravity fields, an understanding of which is essential to formulate any quantum theory of gravity. This book will be beneficial to mathematicians and physicists.

Book Principles of Cosmology and Gravitation

Download or read book Principles of Cosmology and Gravitation written by Michael V Berry and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 1989-01-01 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: General relativity and quantum mechanics have become the two central pillars of theoretical physics. Moreover, general relativity has important applications in astrophysics and high-energy particle physics. Covering the fundamentals of the subject, Principles of Cosmology and Gravitation describes the universe as revealed by observations and presents a theoretical framework to enable important cosmological formulae to be derived and numerical calculations performed. Avoiding elaborate formal discussions, the book presents a practical approach that focuses on the general theory of relativity. It examines different evolutionary models and the gravitational effects of massive bodies. The book also includes a large number of worked examples and problems, half with solutions.

Book Global Aspects in Gravitation and Cosmology

Download or read book Global Aspects in Gravitation and Cosmology written by Pankaj S. Joshi and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1993 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book describes several basic results and applications of global aspects in gravitation theory and cosmology within the framework of Einstein's theory of gravity. Topics include results on the structure and topology of space-time, exact solutions to Einstein equations and singularities, the status of quantum gravity, and quantum effects near space-time singularities in strong curvature fields. Also covered are the global upper limits in cosmology on elementary particle masses which might constitute the dark matter of the universe. After discussing in detail the fundamental role played by global considerations in gravity and general relativity, the author points out the significant problems that remain: the nature and structure of space-time singularities, the cosmic censorship problem in black hole physics, and the issue of quantum effects in strong gravity fields. The author's treatment of gravitational collapse illustrates how powerfully-strong curvature naked singularities could result from the continual gravitational collapse of matter with several reasonable equations of state--including inflowing radiation, dust, or a perfect fluid. Students and mathematicians, astrophysicists, and physicists will find this theoretically rich book a landmark in relativity theory.

Book Canonical Gravity and Applications

Download or read book Canonical Gravity and Applications written by Martin Bojowald and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2010-12-23 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canonical methods are a powerful mathematical tool within the field of gravitational research, both theoretical and experimental, and have contributed to a number of recent developments in physics. Providing mathematical foundations as well as physical applications, this is the first systematic explanation of canonical methods in gravity. The book discusses the mathematical and geometrical notions underlying canonical tools, highlighting their applications in all aspects of gravitational research from advanced mathematical foundations to modern applications in cosmology and black hole physics. The main canonical formulations, including the Arnowitt-Deser-Misner (ADM) formalism and Ashtekar variables, are derived and discussed. Ideal for both graduate students and researchers, this book provides a link between standard introductions to general relativity and advanced expositions of black hole physics, theoretical cosmology or quantum gravity.
