Book excerpt: The Highland Protector series brings to life four mouthwatering Celtic brothers in twenty-first-century North Carolina—where the lasses are anything but tamed. Highland warrior Alec MacDara and his brothers traveled forward in time to protect the sacred Heartstone. Their cover? Owners and operators of a theme park called Highland Life and Legends. As the chairman, Alec has been fending off requests to film at the breathtaking property. It’s only because of the charming correspondence from an enterprising production assistant that he agrees to a meeting at all. That’s when Alec meets a woman whose lush curves make him forget, for the first time, all about tenth-century Scotland. A lowly assistant for her sister’s motion picture company, wannabe screenwriter Sadie Williams is shocked when Alec agrees to let them film at the park upon one condition: that she report to him daily. Sadie’s sister always told her that their parents only adopted her because they felt sorry for the ugly little stray. But Alec looks at Sadie like she’s the most tempting creature in the world. And with his gleaming, musclebound body stripped down to nothing but a hip-hugging kilt and boots, Alec clearly knows a little something about temptation. Praise for Sadie’s Highlander “Readers will delight in the fiery passion that ignites between characters and they will relate to the varying degrees of family dynamics. The author beautifully meshes the past with the present. . . . An awesome read, Sadie’s Highlander can easily be read in one sitting and will stay in the minds of readers long after the last page.”—RT Book Reviews “With scintillating sex and plenty of romantic angst, this novel is likely to appeal to those who like their romance on the hot side.”—Publishers Weekly “Sadie’s Highlander is an engaging, fun romp that combines a very serious ninth-century Scottish Highlander and a sassy twenty-first-century wannabe Hollywood screenwriter. I highly recommend this thoroughly enjoyable and perfect beach read.”—Sharon Cullen, USA Today bestselling author of The Reluctant Duchess “Lovable heroine, hunky Scot and an intriguing plot! What’s not to love!”—Bestselling author Barbara Longley Don’t miss any of Maeve Greyson’s enticing Scottish romances: The Highland Protector Series: SADIE’S HIGHLANDER | JOANNA’S HIGHLANDER | KATIE’S HIGHLANDER The Highland Hearts Series: MY HIGHLAND LOVER | MY HIGHLAND BRIDE | MY TEMPTING HIGHLANDER | MY SEDUCTIVE HIGHLANDER This ebook includes an excerpt from another Loveswept title.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “It was the first week of May 1940 and Mash was part of a patrol from the Cameron Highlanders. They were a few miles in front of the Maginot Line, the impregnable defensive system the French had built along the German border, on what the French called the Line of Contact...” Highlanders’ Revenge tells the story of Mash, the nickname Highland soldiers give to an Englishman in their ranks. Scarred both from the retreat before the Blitzkrieg advance across France and from the murder of his first love, Mash has to integrate himself into a new section that is wary of the sullen and secretive ‘Mash Man’ – an outsider in their midst. Together they journey to Egypt where they encounter a way of life that tests them to their limits. Scorched by day, frozen by night and plagued by insects, they have to learn how to live and fight in the desert as they prepare for one of the greatest battles of the Second World War. They are then cast into the thick of the fighting at El Alamein and the Allies’ tumultuous battle to break through the Axis defenses... Highlanders’ Revenge combines the fast-paced action and intrigue of a military novel with the real-life exploits of the 5th Camerons, an extraordinary unit that saw action in most of the major battles in North Africa and Western Europe. As a result, the book is both a riotous story of battle and life, and also an insight into the world of this little-known, but fierce, fighting unit. It will appeal to fans of military fiction who also appreciate historical accuracy.

Book excerpt: The story of the region, told by an intrepid journalist Many dire predictions followed the collapse of the Soviet Union, but nowhere have they materialized as dramatically as in the Caucasus: insurrection, civil wars, ethnic conflicts, economic disintegration, and up to two million refugees. Moreover, in the 1990s Russia twice went to war in the Caucasus, and suffered a humiliating defeat at the hands of a nation so tiny that it could fit into a single district of Moscow. What is it about the Caucasus that makes the region so restless, so unpredictable, so imbued with heroism but also with fanaticism and pain? In Highlanders, Yo'av Karny offers a better understanding of a region described as a "museum of civilizations," where breathtaking landscapes join with an astounding human diversity. Karny has spent many months among members of some of the smallest ethnic groups on earth, all of them living in the grim shadow of an unhappy empire. But his book is a journey not only to a geographic region but also to darker sides of the human soul, where courage vies with senseless vindictiveness; where honor and duty require people to share the present with long-dead ancestors, some real, some imaginary; and where an ancient way of life is drawing to an end under the combined weight of modernity and intolerance.

Book excerpt: Rebellion was recurrent in the Highlands because the Gaels (Scoti) were an often-oppressed indigenous minority in the nation, Scotland, to which they gave their name. They spoke a language, Gaelic, few outsiders would learn, and had their own family and social system, the clans. Warfare was bloody, culminating in the catastrophe of Culloden Moor during the doomed quest to restore the Stuart kingship to all of Britain. Economic hardship, including the near-genocidal Clearances, in which tenant farmers were replaced with sheep, drove the Gaels from the glens and islands, so that most today live in the diaspora, including millions in North America. Although the Gaels lack a single genetic identity, they clearly draw from distinct roots in the Irish, Norse and Picts. Despite their hardship, the Gaels are also presented in romantic portrayals by the artistic elite of other nations. This book offers ways in which the reader might find roots and ancestry in unfamiliar terrain. Chapters discuss the landscape and language of the Highlanders, the rise of clans, feuds and invasions, and eventual emigration.

Book Ella Baker s Catalytic Leadership

Download or read book Ella Baker s Catalytic Leadership written by Patricia S. Parker and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2020-11-17 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ella Baker (1903–1986) was an influential African American civil rights and human rights activist. For five decades, she worked behind the scenes with people in vulnerable communities to catalyze social justice leadership. Her steadfast belief in the power of ordinary people to create change continues to inspire social justice activists around the world. This book describes a case study that translates Ella Baker’s community engagement philosophy into a catalytic leadership praxis, which others can adapt for their work. Catalytic leadership is a concrete set of communication practices for social justice leadership produced in equitable partnership with, instead of on, communities. The case centers the voices of African American teenage girls who were living in a segregated neighborhood of an affluent college town and became part of a small collective of college students, parents, university faculty, and community activists learning leadership in the spirit of Ella Baker.

Book excerpt: "Magnus MacKay is the ultimate Highlander: tough, proud, able to master any terrain and to best his enemies. Called 'the Saint' for his refusal to discuss women, as well as for his cool and steady leadership, Magnus hides a painful truth. It isn't virtue or piety that keeps him silent, but a wound of love and loss that cuts so deep he cannot bear to speak of it. But when the woman who refused him is betrothed to his friend and fellow Guardsman, Magnus is tested by love's battle cry. A wild and innocent beauty, Helen chose family duty over her desire for Magnus. Now the anger in his eyes mirrors the tormented regret in her heart. But as deadly subterfuge stalks the King and his Guard, Helen vows to right her youthful mistakes with a woman's determined spirit. Still, Magnus harbors secrets and an iron will not to weaken to temptation-- or heartache-- again. But as danger looms, it's the kiss not of a saint, but of a sinner, that can save them" -- p.
