Wonder at the joy of the dreadful power of nature at it's wildest, at the power of human resilience and the joy and the pain of a small boy growing up and at the strength and love of his young mother and their shared love of the land. Just three years after the Great War, in the remote Highlands of Scotland, during a terrible storm, Màiri McDonald gives birth to a son. Her croft, high on the moors, on the slopes of the golden mountain, supports her few sheep. The sour soil provides a scant living for her and her troubled husband Hamish. Callum, her newborn son contains all her hopes and the hopes of the tiny community of The Glen who have recently lost so many lives to the devastations of war. As Callum grows he begins to love this capricious land and its way of life as much as his mother does, despite its hardships and setbacks., despite heartbreak, tragedy and dangers. But he also begins to yearn for a life beyond The Glen. Màiri too begins to wonder if her beloved son will ever have a future beyond that of her own small and remote world. Can Màiri's and Callum's dreams ever be fulfilled in such tumultuous times and against so many obstacles.

The story of that lesser known human disaster is told in this prize-winning and internationally acclaimed book. The author describes the classic themes of highland and Scottish history, including the clearances, landlordism, crofting life, emigration and migration in a subtle and intricate reconstruction based on a wide range of sources. Book excerpt: A provocative account of the 78th Fraser’s Highlanders and its crucial place in history. The remarkable story of the men of the 78th Fraser’s Highlanders moves from the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion in Scotland, through the Seven Years’ War and the American Revolution, to the War of 1812. Simon Fraser, chief of the Clan Fraser of Lovat, raised the 78th Highlanders, a regiment that played a major role in defeating the French on the Plains of Abraham. Driv’n by Fortune tackles the myths embedded in nationalistic history and in fictional accounts of these Highland soldier-settlers who brought the Scottish Enlightenment to North America. The impact of the 78th Fraser’s Highlanders, which extended far beyond Scotland and the Canada of their times, is finally being told.

Book Land Faith and the Crofting Community

Download or read book Land Faith and the Crofting Community written by Allan W. MacColl and published by Edinburgh University Press. This book was released on 2006-04-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book probes the deep-rooted links between the land, the people and the religious culture of the Scottish Highlands and Islands in the nineteenth century. The responses of the clergy to the social crisis which enveloped the region have often been characterised as a mixture of callous indifference, cowering deference or fatalistic passivity. Allan MacColl's pioneering research challenges such stereotypical representations of Highland ministers head-on. Land, Faith and the Crofting Community is the first full-scale examination of Christian social teaching in the nineteenth-century Gaidhealtachd and addresses a major gap in the historical understanding of Gaelic society. Seeking to lay bare the existing myths by a wide-ranging analysis of all the denominational, theological and social factors at play, this study boldly overturns the received scholarly and popular interpretations. A ground-breaking work, it explores a substantial but under-utilised field of evidence and questions whether or not Highland Christians "e; both clergy and laity "e; were committed to land reform as an engine of social improvement and conciliation. The Christian contribution to the development of a distinctively Highland identity "e; which found expression during the Crofters' War of the 1880s "e; is delineated, while wider links between theology and social philosophy are examined from beyond the perspective of the Highlands.

Book From an Antique Land

    Book Details:
  • Author : Anne MacLeod
  • Publisher : Birlinn
  • Release : 2012-11-05

Download or read book From an Antique Land written by Anne MacLeod and published by Birlinn. This book was released on 2012-11-05 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at visual images as an alternative and undervalued source of evidence for ideas about the Scottish Gaidhealtachd in the period 1700 - 1880. Illustrated with 100 plates, it brings together many little known and previously unrelated images. Addressing the textual bias inherent in Scottish historical studies, the book examines a broad range of maps, plans, paintings, drawings, sketches and printed images, arguing that the concept of antiquity was the single most powerful influence driving the visual representation of the Highlands and Islands from 1700 to 1880, and indeed beyond. Successive chapters look at archaeological, ethnological and geological motives for visualising the Highlands, and at the bias in favour of antiquity which resulted from the spread of these intellectual influences into the fine arts. The book concludes that the shadow of time which hallmarked visual representations of the region resulted in a preservationist mentality which has had powerful repercussions for approaches to Highland issues down to the present day. The book will appeal to historians, art historians, cultural geographers, and the general reader interested in Highland history and culture.
