Book The Bald Eagle The Improbable Journey of America s Bird

Download or read book The Bald Eagle The Improbable Journey of America s Bird written by Jack E. Davis and published by Liveright Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-01 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Best Books of the Month: Wall Street Journal, Kirkus Reviews From the Pulitzer Prize–winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you’re not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as “majestic” and “noble,” yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. Taking us from before the nation’s founding through inconceivable resurgences of this enduring all-American species, Jack E. Davis contrasts the age when native peoples lived beside it peacefully with that when others, whether through hunting bounties or DDT pesticides, twice pushed Haliaeetus leucocephalus to the brink of extinction. Filled with spectacular stories of Founding Fathers, rapacious hunters, heroic bird rescuers, and the lives of bald eagles themselves—monogamous creatures, considered among the animal world’s finest parents—The Bald Eagle is a much-awaited cultural and natural history that demonstrates how this bird’s wondrous journey may provide inspiration today, as we grapple with environmental peril on a larger scale.

Book Higher Living

  • Author : Holly Hester
  • Publisher : Page Publishing Inc
  • Release : 2022-03-31
  • ISBN : 1662457235
  • Pages : 158 pages

Download or read book Higher Living written by Holly Hester and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2022-03-31 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I wrote this book after many people telling me throughout years of ministry that I should. I have traveled to many places, and I have found that people ask me the same question over and over, “Holly, how do I truly live higher?” I decided to write this book to simply answer that question. It is my sincere hope that after you read this book, not only will you have the insight to do just that, but you will know what it personally means to you to live in your higher life. I hope this book helps you find your true calling and purpose directly given by the Lord. As we dive into these books, into each chapter, I ask one thing only—be open. Be open to more. Let me explain. There are levels in each of us to live out our desire to live to a higher living. The desire should be there to begin. When the desire is there, access is the way—a higher level called the beyond then occurs for us. This is where living higher begins. Posture will change. There is a certain level of insight, purpose, and access that is achieved when desire grows and posture changes. There is a birthing. It is not simply living only, a mistake of thought so many make. So here is the question again, “How?” The answer is not how. It is desire, posture, and access to a higher way. Let us start with desire. The word desire is translated from the Greek word epithumia from epi, meaning “focused on.” Another use of this term is “inordinate” or excessively large. It is my prayer that we have an inordinate desire to truly live higher and to focus on what this can mean for us in the same way it meant to me as I have written each chapter. It is my strong desire that we focus right now. When there is a lack of focus, vision becomes very blurry. I can recall having a blurred vision when others would ask me what living higher meant. I can even recall a time when a picture was taken of me as a child with my eyes closed. A relative later found this picture and asked me how I was able to sleep standing up while the camera caught my image. I ask us all that my relative asked me, How are we able to keep our eyes closed right now? Let us have the strong, inordinate desire to focus on the moment. This desire to open our eyes will naturally pull the camera lens to us. What happened? Nothing. We opened our eyes. After desire comes to posture. Picture posture is necessary when capturing a memory. Are we willing to change our posture for the cameras in life? It’s interesting what happens after we open our eyes for the camera changes our position. Finally, we achieve access to see closer, look at, change more. The camera gives access. Access to function in life is far greater than desire or even posture, believe it or not. Haven’t we all glanced at a picture that was taken of us before? Perhaps a picture that we take with others involved? These three elements are the agents for higher territory— a greater way. A new ground, and a new look from a different angle in each situation. Our camera lens must focus.

Book Life Is Magic

Download or read book Life Is Magic written by Jon Dorenbos and published by Avid Reader Press / Simon & Schuster. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Jon Dorenbos is a magical person. Life Is Magic shows how we can all choose happiness in the face of overwhelming odds.” —Ellen DeGeneres An extraordinary and empowering story of resilience, forgiveness, and living a life of purpose in the face of unfathomable obstacles. You may know him as an NFL All-Pro or as a world-class magician who made the finals of America’s Got Talent, but Jon Dorenbos says that what he does is not who he is. He is someone who coached himself, at the most tender of ages, to turn tragedy to triumph. One morning in August 1992, when Jon was twelve years old and living a seemingly idyllic childhood in suburban Seattle, he woke up for baseball camp. His dad waved goodbye. Later that day, Jon heard the news: his father had murdered his mother in the family’s three-car garage. In an instant, his life had shattered. He’d essentially been orphaned. Thrust into foster care while his father stood trial for murder, Jon struggled. Left to himself, he discovered an unlikely escape performing magic tricks. If you found a way to alter your reality, after your dad—your hero—killed your mom, wouldn’t you cling to it too? Then came football, which provided a release for all of his pent-up anger. Together, magic and football saved him, leading to fourteen NFL seasons on the gridiron and raucous sleight of hand performances to packed houses across the globe. In 2017, he was diagnosed with a life-threatening heart condition leaving him with a choice. To either break down or—as he’d by now long taught himself—bounce back. “Life Is Magic shows how we can all choose happiness in the face of overwhelming odds” (Ellen DeGeneres) and provides a roadmap for overcoming even the darkest of times. Jon’s story is poignant and powerful, told by a charismatic and optimistic man who has overcome life-or-death challenges with grace, persistence, a childlike sense of wonder…and jaw-dropping card tricks.

Book When the Tree Flowered

Download or read book When the Tree Flowered written by John G. Neihardt and published by U of Nebraska Press. This book was released on 1991-01-01 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "When the Tree Flowered is John Neihardt's mature and reflective inter-pretation of the old Sioux way of life. He served as a translator of the Sioux past whose audience has proved not to be limited by space or time. Through his writings, Black Elk, Eagle Elk, and other old men who were of that last generation of Sioux to have participated in the old buffalo-hunting life and disorienting period of strife with the U.S. army found a literary voice. What they said chronicles a dramatic transition in the life of the Plains Indians; the record of their thoughts, interpreted by Neihardt, is a legacy preserved for the future. It transcends the specifics of this one tragic case of cultural misunderstanding and conflict and speaks to universal human concerns. It is a story worth contemplating both for itself and for the lessons it teaches all humanity."-Raymond J. DeMallie, editor of The Sixth Grandfather: Black Elk's Teachings Given to John G. Neihardt. "A warm and often moving piece of literature which can be appreciated for its literary value and for its insights into Sioux culture."-Richard N. Ellis, Rocky Mountain Social Science Journal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the current literature and knowledge on the evolution and ecology of all the birds named as eagles, with particular emphasis on the larger species. It also examines the past and current relations between eagles and people, including habitat change and conservation issues. Eagle ecologies and conservation are currently seriously impacted by human activities such as industrialization, urbanization, pollution, deforestation and hunting. Some eagle species have consequently experienced extreme population changes. There are, however, some positive developments. Eagles have a strong, historic bond with human civilization, due to their status as the world’s most charismatic birds. Conservation policies have also been successful in repopulating some ecosystems with breeding eagles. Therefore, despite the complexity of this relationship, there may yet be hope for this unique species group, frequently rated as the kings of birds, and symbolic of human power, ambition, royalty, nationality, and even concepts of God. It is hoped that this book will contribute to the further understanding of these unique and fantastic birds.

Book excerpt: This comprehensive monograph is a second edition of one of the most popular Poyser monographs; it covers all aspects of this spectacular eagle's biology and ecology, including a full review of the literature and incorporating the considerable body of research on the species since the publication of the first edition in 1997. The late Jeff Watson was one of Scotland's foremost eagle experts, with more than 20 years of research on the birds; following Jeff's untimely death, the book is being completed by his colleagues Des Thompson and Helen Riley. Scottish studies provide the foundation for a treatment that also includes up-to-date information from work in North America, continental Europe and elsewhere. This global view allows fascinating insights into the species' relationships with a variety of different habitats and leads to many new and important conclusions regarding its ecology. This highly readable and authoritative account is destined to become the standard reference on the species, both in Scotland and elsewhere in the world. The text is enriched with many superb pictures of this majestic bird and additional wash landscapes capture the very special atmosphere of Scotland's Golden Eagle country.
