Book Why Can t We Be Good

Download or read book Why Can t We Be Good written by Jacob Needleman and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2007-02-01 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The widely respected social philosopher embarks on his most gripping and broadly appealing work, asking the ultimate question of human nature: Why do we repeatedly violate our most deeply held values and beliefs? After nearly forty years of weighing humanity's deepest dilemmas-working in settings ranging from university and high school classrooms to corporate offices and hospitals-bestselling author, philosopher, and religious scholar Jacob Needleman presents the most urgent, deeply felt, and widely accessible work of his career. In Why Can't We Be Good? Needleman identifies the core problem that therapists and social philosophers fail to see. He depicts the individual human as a being who knows what is good, yet who remains mysteriously helpless to innerly adopt the ethical, moral, and religious ideas that are bequeathed to him.

Book The Ideal Made Real

Book excerpt: "The Ideal Made Real" is a self-help and spiritual book written by Christian D. Larson, an American New Thought leader and prolific writer in the early 20th century. Originally published in 1909, Larson's work explores themes related to personal development, positive thinking, and the manifestation of one's ideals into reality. Key elements of "The Ideal Made Real" include: New Thought Philosophy: The book is rooted in the principles of New Thought, a movement that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, emphasizing the power of positive thinking, the law of attraction, and the influence of thought on one's reality. Power of Thought: Larson discusses the transformative power of thought and suggests that individuals have the ability to shape their destinies through their mental attitudes. He encourages readers to cultivate positive thoughts, beliefs, and attitudes to bring about positive changes in their lives. Visualization and Affirmations: Larson introduces practices such as visualization and affirmations as tools for achieving one's goals. He emphasizes the importance of creating clear mental images of one's desired outcomes and consistently affirming these goals to align the mind with positive possibilities. Personal Transformation: The book explores the concept of personal transformation and the idea that individuals have the potential to elevate their lives by aligning their thoughts with higher ideals. Larson encourages readers to strive for personal excellence and moral growth. Spiritual Perspective: While grounded in practical advice for personal development, Larson's work also carries a spiritual undertone. He discusses the connection between the individual and the universal mind or higher consciousness, suggesting that aligning with spiritual principles can lead to a more fulfilling and purposeful life. "The Ideal Made Real" is reflective of the optimistic and metaphysical thinking prevalent in the New Thought movement. Larson's writing style is motivational, and he provides readers with practical insights and exercises to implement in their daily lives. The book has been appreciated by those seeking guidance on personal growth, positive thinking, and the realization of their ideals.

Book The Ideal made Real Unabridged edition

Download or read book The Ideal made Real Unabridged edition written by Christian D. Larson and published by David De Angelis. This book was released on 2022-03-26 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this work is to present practical methods through which anyone, the beginner in particular, may realize his ideals, cause his cherished dreams to come true, and cause the visions of the soul to become tangible realities in everyday life. The best minds now believe that the ideal can be made real; that every lofty idea can be applied in practical living, and that all that is beautiful on the heights of existence can be made permanent expressions in personal existence. And so popular is this belief becoming that it is rapidly permeating the entire thought of the world. Accordingly, the demand for instructive knowledge on this subject, that is simple as well as scientific, is becoming almost universal. This book has been written to supply that demand. However, it does not claim to be complete; nor could any work on "The Ideal Made Real" possibly be complete, because the ideal world is limitless and the process of making real the ideal is endless. To know how to begin is the principal secret, and he who has learned this secret may go on further and further, forever and forever, until he reaches the most sublime heights that endless existence has in store. No attempt has been made to formulate the ideas, methods and principles presented, into a definite system. In fact, the tendency to form a new system of thinking or a new philosophy of life, has been purposely avoided. Closely defined systems invariably become obstacles to advancement, and we are not concerned with new philosophies of life. Our purpose is the living of a greater and a greater life, and in such a life all philosophies must constantly change. In preparing the following pages, the object has been to take the beginner out of the limitations of the old into the boundlessness of the new; to emphasize the fact that the possibilities that are latent in the human mind are nothing less than marvelous, and that the way to turn those possibilities to practical use is sufficiently simple for anyone to understand. But no method has been presented that will not tend to suggest new and better methods as required for further advancement. The best ideas are those that inspire new ideas, better ideas, greater ideas. The most perfect science of life is that science that gives each individual the power to create and recreate his own science as he ascends in the scale of life. (Great souls are developed only where minds are left free to employ the best-known methods according to their own understanding and insight. And it is only as the soul grows greater and greater that the ideal can be made real. It is individuality and originality that give each person the power to make his own life as he may wish it to be; but those two important factors do not flourish in definite systems. There is no progress where the soul is placed in the hands of methods; true and continuous progress can he promoted only where all ideas, all methods and all principles are placed in the hands of the soul. We have selected the best ideas and the best methods known for making the ideal real, and through this work, will place them in your hands. We do not ask you to follow these methods; we simply ask you to use them. You will then find them all to be practical; you will find that every one will work and produce the results you desire. You will then, not only make real the ideal in your present sphere of life, but you will also develop within yourself that Greater Life, the power of which has no limit, the joy of which has no end.

Book High Ideals and Noble Intentions

Download or read book High Ideals and Noble Intentions written by Peter R. Elson and published by University of Toronto Press. This book was released on 2011-03-19 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationships between governments and the voluntary sector in Canada are long-standing and complex. Beginning with an historical overview of developments in voluntary sector-government relations from 1600 to 1930, High Ideals and Noble Intentions goes on to explore more recent events and to bring present day policy and practice into focus. Peter R. Elson examines critical historical events in the relationship between the federal government and the voluntary sector which continue to exert their influence. He demonstrates through in-depth case studies that these events are critical to understanding contemporary voluntary sector-government relations. Elson explores the impact of the regulation of charities based on amendments to the 1930 Income War Tax Act; the shift from citizen-based program funding to service-based contract funding in the mid-1990s; and advocacy regulation changes in the 1980s. Elson's case is strengthened by an important and timely comparison between voluntary sector and central government relations in Canada and England. This historically informed comparative analysis provides the basis for practical recommendations meant to improve the future of voluntary sector-government relations across Canada.
