Hotchkiss The Promise of Innovation seems to sum up the book's premise best: make sure students are learning, and hold faculty and administrators accountable for that learning. The book's eight chapters are organized into three basic themes and offer numerous examples of innovative practices across the spectrum of private, public, and for-profit institutions. The book's themes include: a look at barriers to innovation in higher education; examples of innovations currently being implemented; and a glimpse into the future of nontraditional universities. The editors incorporate contributions from authors from academia as well as the private sector. The contributors who hail from academia hold posts either in or associated with schools of business, and many of the authors advocate tenets of a business model. The contributors represent institutions such as University of Southern California We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. This book was released on 2018-03-23 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Higher Education as a Training for Business Few facts in education are more striking of late years than the growth in attendance at colleges and universities. The rate of this growth considerably exceeds that of the population of the country as a whole. A concomitant fact 15 the comparatively small number of college students who are seeking the learned professions. The great mass of the young men in college after graduation will be connected with some form of business. There are those who think that the present situation is a mistake; that young men are wasting their time, so far as a business career is concerned, by spending years in obtaining a college course. Is this a correct View of the situation? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Higher Education and Business Standards Last summer, when we reached California for a year's sojourn, we had the good fortune to secure a house with a splendid garden. A few weeks ago, after the early warm days of a California February had opened up the first blossoms of the season, our little five-year-old discovered that the garden furnished a fine outlet for her enterprise, and she soon produced two gorgeous - I will not say beautiful - bouquets. Book Education for Business Classic Reprint

Download or read book Education for Business Classic Reprint written by Leverett S. Lyon and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 608 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education for Business This volume was prepared with the hope, expressed in the preface to the first edition, that it might be of service to general readers and to students in institutions giving teacher training. If the general reader had been the only reader contemplated, the clear expression of a point of view would have been the only matter of primary importance. But to make the book valuable to students, the evidence was laid out in some detail, conflicting attitudes were expressed, questions interpolated, and material otherwise introduced for the constant discussion and reaction of class work. These introductions into the skeleton of thought make it possible for the student to develop a view through his own thinking, but they constitute something of an interference to the reader who wishes to see quickly approach and conclusions only. There has therefore been added in this edition a final chapter which is something of a sketch of the book as a whole. It is hoped that this chapter may serve the general reader as a certification of viewpoint and the student as'a summary as well. As the title of the chapter indicates, there is also the belief that this summarized viewpoint may aid educators in applying the ideas of the book to practical situations. Book Business Education and Accountancy Classic Reprint

Download or read book Business Education and Accountancy Classic Reprint written by Charles Waldo Haskins and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-27 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business Education and Accountancy This volume has been prepared not alone as a memorial to Mr. Haskins. Better warrant is found in the fact that it represents the most advanced thought of those not actively engaged in the teach ing profession on the subject of business training and on the possibility of raising high professional standards in what may be called business special ties. And if we are to draw conclusions from his published expressions, we find, clearly recognized, at least three branches of professional serviee in business which have no adequate educational sup port. The first of these is Accountancy - already recognized by the laws of five American States. The second business profession indicated is Finance - including banking, insurance, and other well established and clearly defined financial specialties. The third is Business Administration. As pointed out by Mr. Haskins, education has not kept pace with the demands of the time. In many instances scientific inquiry is wholly wanting and professional education has no literary basis of which to avail itself. This book was released on 2018-03-12 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from College Training and the Business Man For almost three hundred years the American college has been seeking to serve the higher interests of American life. It has been, and still is, supposed to bear a special relation of preparation for what are known as the learned professions. Bank ing, transportation, insurance represent three great labors to which men in increas ing numbers and of greater power have in recent years been giving themselves. The purpose of the following pages is to present the advantage which these three vocations, which no one calls learned, and which the work of general administration, may receive from the college. The purpose is in a way narrow; but I venture to hope that in trying to gain it I have succeeded in illustrating some advantages which the col lege may give to man as man. For, the great human worth of the college is incom parably superior to its worth in training etfi cient administrators. Book Business English Classic Reprint

Download or read book Business English Classic Reprint written by Edwin Herbert Lewis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-11 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Business English This work grew out of teaching English to college men who were beginning their studies in Engineering. It seemed for various reasons desirable to give such students - along with their work in pure literature and technical English - some in struction in English as adapted to buying and selling, advertis ing and correspondence. There seemed however to be no text-book quite available for such a purpose. A purely elementary text-book, ignoring all high-school English and some of the grammar-school instruo tion, would not do. Nor could the need be supplied by some more advanced book devoted to the principles of correspond ence. What was needed was a book which took into considera tion the best standards and scholarship of college teaching, and applied the established principles of composition to the special problems of business, with due reference to the vocabularies of commerce and commercial law. From this point of view, then, the text of the book was writ ten. When finished, much of it was seen to be Within the grasp of younger students. It was then determined to simplify the text a little further, and to construct exercises which would make the book serviceable in the third and fourth year of tech nical and commercial high schools, in the first year of technical colleges, in business colleges, and in correspondence work. The manner in which this adjustment has been made may be seen at a glance in the exercises under Argument (p. Book True and False Standards of Graduate Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book True and False Standards of Graduate Work Classic Reprint written by Andrew Fleming West and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from True and False Standards of Graduate Work Let us turn at once to the graduate work and con fine our attention to the other section of the field of liberal studies. Professional and technical studies may in a sense he depended on to take care of them selves. They will always flourish so long as men are seeking to be educated in order to make a profitable living. But graduate work in liberal studies cannot be maintained on this basis, because the end aimed at is different. For if the pursuit of wealth or station is the end aimed at by a man who thinks he is giving himself to the life of a scholar, he is not aiming at a scholarly end. Consequently, in order to maintain its own standards, a true graduate school in the lib eral arts and sciences must depend on something else to sustain it. The moment it becomes an employ ment bureau or an agency for finding places, a sordid motive enters, and it is in danger of ceasing to be a school devoted to the cause of truth and knowl edge. Unless, therefore, the life of the scholar is to appeal to men not primarily as a means of livelihood, but because they cannot help following the scholar's life, we have no sufficient basis for justifying the maintenance of this all-important school. And if this school perishes or becomes degraded, you may be very sure that sooner or later every valuable func tion of the university will be injured. I suppose we can all accept heartily the state ment that the chief business of a university is tomaintain standards, - to determine, inspect, and certify the intellectual and moral weights and measures. I do not doubt we can go farther and agree in asserting that this maintenance of intellectual and moral stand ards is acutely needed in our own nation at this time when its material interests are becoming so vast and complex. And this, more than all else, is the pecul iar and pressing duty of every graduate school in liberal studies. Here the higher teachers of the na tion are being trained. Here the influences which make for truth and reason are or, at least, ought to be most pure and uncontaminated. The service to be rendered is priceless, the need is urgent, and the fact that our graduate schools in liberal studies, pro perly planned and guided, are specially fitted to render this service is the fact which justifies their existence. Download or read book Monographs on Education in the United States Vol 13 written by Edmund J. James and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-23 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Monographs on Education in the United States, Vol. 13: Commercial Education Business Teachers' Association in the following pointed words: The training which the american commercial college gives its pupils, while good in a way, is extremely narrow and little more than rudimentary. It cannot properly be called business training, it is merely clerical training. While this kind of training may have satisfied the requirements in the past, and while there may continue to be a certain demand for it in the future, I believe the time has arrived when the American commercial school Should cease to be a purely clerk factory and educational repair shop, and should assume the duties and position of a real business training school. In order to do this it must raise the standards, broaden and deepen its course of study and lengthen its time requirement. Its present standards both for admission and graduation are too low, its course of study too narrow and shallow, and its time requirement too short. It is useless to expect to attract and hold high-grade students with low-grade standards, or thoroughly to train young people for the duties of busi ness life with the present course of study, and in the time now given to this work. The preparation for business life ought to be as thorough as for professional life, and I believe that the time is not far distant when it will be. It should be said, and in the same sense, of the gradu ates Of our commercial schools as it is said of the graduates of our best technical schools, viz., 'that the business world not only finds that it can afford to employ them, but that it cannot afford not to employ them.' There is a good demand for thoroughly trained men - not merely clerks in all departments of business, and the commercial school ought to be able to supply that demand.
