Book High Voltage Boost DC DC Converter Suitable for Variable Voltage Sources and High Power Photovoltaic Application

Download or read book High Voltage Boost DC DC Converter Suitable for Variable Voltage Sources and High Power Photovoltaic Application written by Fredrick Mukundi Mwaniki and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Important considerations of a photovoltaic (PV) source are achieving a high voltage and drawing currents with very little ripple component from it. Furthermore, the output from such a source is variable depending on irradiation and temperature. In this research, literature review of prior methods employed to boost the output voltage of a PV source is examined and their limitations identified. This research then proposes a multi-phase tapped-coupled inductor boost DC-DC converter that can achieve high voltage boost ratios, without adversely compromising performance, to be used as an interface to a PV source. The proposed converter achieves minimal current and voltage ripple both at the input and output. The suitability of the proposed converter topology for variable input voltage and variable power operation is demonstrated in this dissertation. The proposed converter is also shown to have good performance at high power levels, making it very suitable for high power applications. Detailed analysis of the proposed converter is done. Advantages of the proposed converter are explained analytically and confirmed through simulations and experimentally. Regulation of the converter output voltage is also explained and implemented using a digital controller. The simulation and experimental results confirm that the proposed converter is suitable for high power as well as variable power, variable voltage applications where high voltage boost ratios are required.

Book High Voltage Devices and Circuits in Standard CMOS Technologies

Download or read book High Voltage Devices and Circuits in Standard CMOS Technologies written by Hussein Ballan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 294 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Standard voltages used in today's ICs may vary from about 1.3V to more than 100V, depending on the technology and the application. High voltage is therefore a relative notion. High Voltage Devices and Circuits in Standard CMOS Technologies is mainly focused on standard CMOS technologies, where high voltage (HV) is defined as any voltage higher than the nominal (low) voltage, i.e. 5V, 3.3V, or even lower. In this standard CMOS environment, IC designers are more and more frequently confronted with HV problems, particularly at the I/O level of the circuit. In the first group of applications, a large range of industrial or consumer circuits either require HV driving capabilities, or are supposed to work in a high-voltage environment. This includes ultrasonic drivers, flat panel displays, robotics, automotive, etc. On the other hand, in the emerging field of integrated microsystems, MEMS actuators mainly make use of electrostatic forces involving voltages in the typical range of 30 to 60V. Last but not least, with the advent of deep sub-micron and/or low-power technologies, the operating voltage tends towards levels ranging from 1V to 2.5V, while the interface needs to be compatible with higher voltages, such as 5V. For all these categories of applications, it is usually preferable to perform most of the signal processing at low voltage, while the resulting output rises to a higher voltage level. Solving this problem requires some special actions at three levels: technology, circuit design and layout. High Voltage Devices and Circuits in Standard CMOS Technologies addresses these topics in a clear and organized way. The theoretical background is supported by practical information and design examples. It is an invaluable reference for researchers and professionals in both the design and device communities.

Book Advanced Topologies of High voltage gain DC DC Boost Converters for Renewable Energy Applications

Download or read book Advanced Topologies of High voltage gain DC DC Boost Converters for Renewable Energy Applications written by Ahmad Saeed Y. Alzahrani and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation proposes several advanced power electronic converters that are suitable for integrating low-voltage dc input sources, such as photovoltaic (PV) solar panels, to a high voltage dc bus in a 200 - 960 V dc distribution system. The proposed converters operate in the continuous conduction mode (CCM) and offer desirable features such as low-voltage stresses on components, continuous input currents, and the ability to integrate several independent dc input sources. First, a family of scalable interleaved boost converters with voltage multiplier cells (VMC) is introduced. Several possible combinations of Dickson and Cockcroft-Walton VMCs are demonstrated and compared in terms of the voltage gain, number of components, and input current sharing. This dissertation also presents a novel VMC structure called Bi-fold Dickson. The novel VMC offers equal current sharing between phases regardless of the number of stages, voltage ripple cancellation at each stage, and does not require an output diode. A family of high-voltage-gain multilevel boost converters is presented, with detailed example of the hybrid flyback and three-level boost converter. In this family, the effective frequency seen by the magnetic element is multiple times the switching frequency, and therefore smaller magnetic devices can be used. Theory of operations, steady-state analysis, component selections, simulation, and efficiency analysis are included for each proposed converter. The operation of the proposed converters was further verified with 80 - 200 W hardware prototypes"--Abstract, page iv.

Book Understanding Microelectronics

Download or read book Understanding Microelectronics written by Franco Maloberti and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-10-21 with total page 694 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The microelectronics evolution has given rise to many modern benefits but has also changed design methods and attitudes to learning. Technology advancements shifted focus from simple circuits to complex systems with major attention to high-level descriptions. The design methods moved from a bottom-up to a top-down approach. For today’s students, the most beneficial approach to learning is this top-down method that demonstrates a global view of electronics before going into specifics. Franco Maloberti uses this approach to explain the fundamentals of electronics, such as processing functions, signals and their properties. Here he presents a helpful balance of theory, examples, and verification of results, while keeping mathematics and signal processing theory to a minimum. Key features: Presents a new learning approach that will greatly improve students’ ability to retain key concepts in electronics studies Match the evolution of Computer Aided Design (CAD) which focuses increasingly on high-level design Covers sub-functions as well as basic circuits and basic components Provides real-world examples to inspire a thorough understanding of global issues, before going into the detail of components and devices Discusses power conversion and management; an important area that is missing in other books on the subject End-of-chapter problems and self-training sections support the reader in exploring systems and understanding them at increasing levels of complexity Inside this book you will find a complete explanation of electronics that can be applied across a range of disciplines including electrical engineering and physics. This comprehensive introduction will be of benefit to students studying electronics, as well as their lecturers and professors. Postgraduate engineers, those in vocational training, and design and application engineers will also find this book useful.
