Book excerpt: 64 Shots: Leadership in a Crazy World is a compendium of value-accelerators for business and life. It is gathered as a 64 shot method from the astute observations and remarkable life of creative business leader and iconoclast Kevin Roberts. A provocative figure traversing the peaks of global commerce, media and sport, Kevin Roberts - creator of the groundbreaking idea Lovemarks - is recognized as one of today's most uncompromisingly-positive and inspirational leaders. In 64 Shots, Roberts draws on the biggest ideas, toughest experiences and greatest influences of his life to present 16X4 stripped down, straight-forward and instantly-absorbable insights on how to bring order to the chaos of business and life. The punchy insights into winning - hitting readers lightly jab after jab - are an array of one-liners, sound bites, tweets, charts, quotes and historical reference points. They are loaded with Roberts' experience, story, brio, provocation and direction. The language is extreme, brimming with the irrepressible attitude and provocation that fueled Roberts' meteoric career. While there is a sequence, the 64 shots are stand-alone signposts towards living an enterprising and winning life. Anyone can dip into the book anywhere and find value. The writing is accompanied by (not necessarily linked to) a visual order of black-and-white photos of leaders in their cultural fields, some modern, many historical, some famous, and all personal. This eclectic selection of people are both direct and indirect influences to Kevin Roberts' life. They all have an interesting - and some mysterious - connection to concepts of leadership in a crazy world. Examples are: Mary Quant, Vince Lombardi, Margaret Thatcher, Vivienne Westwood, Twiggy, Tom Peters, Peter Drucker, Martin Luther King, Renzo Rosso, Brigit Bardot, Bob Dylan, Sean Fitzpatrick (a rugby player). The book is high touch and glossy. It feels like Apple, not Shakespeare. 64 Shots - will you take them?

Book Team Leadership in High Hazard Environments

Download or read book Team Leadership in High Hazard Environments written by Mr Randy E Cadieux and published by Gower Publishing, Ltd.. This book was released on 2014-12-28 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Safety performance is a complicated issue, particularly in high-hazard environments, where time and other constraints can be amplified, and result in numerous impacts. From an organizational and business perspective, safety and production/performance are often seen as competing goals. When production is increased, safety defenses and barriers frequently decrease, and when programs are developed in an effort to improve safety, employees may be unable to meet production goals within the safety constraints. Team Leadership in High-Hazard Environments recognizes these difficulties and constraints and proposes an approach to safety leadership in which safety and organizational performance are inextricably linked; one that addresses safety from both the systems and human factors perspectives. To that end, Randy Cadieux introduces the nine essential components to team leadership. By studying these areas and using the information in each chapter, organizational leaders, managers, and supervisors will gain an understanding of key factors that will help them design, develop, and implement team training programs that improve the way employees work together and the way they mitigate hazards. Additionally, the book describes how work systems and work environments may be designed or shaped so that teams are placed in a position to do their optimal work, maximizing the potential for human and team performance. This is an important book that draws on techniques and models developed from Crew Resource Management, human factors, risk management, as well as more traditional HR management disciplines.

Book Thriving in High Pressure Environments

Download or read book Thriving in High Pressure Environments written by Ulrike Staerk and published by . This book was released on 2021-04-02 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forged by fire In April 2020, our family moved to Bozeman, MT, where I took on a new role as Managing Director Strategic IT at Montana State University. From my first day on the job, the outbreak of the global COVID-19 pandemic forced us to think on our toes, constantly change our strategies and tactics, and always be ready for surprises. Applying my learnings from high-stake, high-pressure roles in Amazon allowed me to help transform the organization and culture while rebuilding team morale and keeping motivation high. During the pandemic, my team delivered high-impact outcomes at an unprecedented velocity and volume. We were rewriting every process in the book while running at top speed, keeping up with ever-changing demands and constraints to serve our customers during those challenging times. The world population lived through challenging, demanding, and emotionally taxing times in the year 2020. Times like that make you break or come out stronger on the other side. I tried to help my team come out stronger by sharing my learnings from the decades with Microsoft and Amazon in what I called 'weekly reflections'. Most often, those reflections discussed approaches and thought models to deal with specific issues that I observed during that week. A different set of challenges presented themselves when Uli took over a role as Site Manager for the Montana State University COVID Testing Center and later their COVID vaccination program. Some of my thoughts and lessons were inspired by those challenges. This book summarizes the lessons, approaches, and principles that I shared with my team as we all did our best to deliver exceptional service to our customers in circumstances that no one was prepared for. I hope that some of the strategies and principles will work for you as beautifully as they did for me. I hope they will help you thrive in challenging situations and help you get one step closer to your dreams. Alfons Bozeman, MT March 2021 Reviews This common-sense approach to discussing what has been learned is easily understandable and was readily adapted to a variety of challenging situations that we as business people experienced in the recent past. It also provides a structured guide to apply those same "learnings" as we move through future weeks, months, and years. If you seek theory, you will be disappointed. If you pursue reality and the associated efforts of discovering new and creative ways to resolve issues, you will be very satisfied. A concept that I encourage and attempt to adhere to myself is "change, assess, and then change again". This book will provide the foundation for taking action, assessing, learning, and taking action again. Michael Trotter Vice President and CIO, Montana State University About the authors Alfons worked at Hewlett Packard, Microsoft, and Amazon in Executive and Senior leadership roles for the last 25+ years. He currently serves as Managing Director Strategic IT at Montana State University. Uli practiced as an MD in Germany. When she moved to the US, Uli became a Tai Chi, mindfulness, and art teacher. To help through the pandemic, Uli stepped up to lead the Montana State University COVID Testing Center as well as their vaccination program.
