Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High-Temperature Measurements The measurement of high temperatures was considered for a long time to be a very difficult operation and of a very uncertain precision. There were cited with admiration a half-dozen determinations seeming to merit some confidence. During the last few years the question has made considerable progress, and we possess to-day several sufficiently precise pyrometers whose usage is rapidly spreading among scientific and industrial laboratories. Before describing them, perhaps it will not be useless to indicate the services that they may render to science and to industry, by giving a brief summary of similar services that they have already rendered. Among the researches in pure science which result from the new methods of the measurement of high temperatures, of primary importance are the masterly investigations of Osmond on the allotropic transformations of iron. After having precisely determined the nature of the phenomenon of recalescence, noted for the first time by Gore and Bartlett, Osmond discovered in iron two similar transformations: one, taking place in the neighborhood of 750, corresponds to the loss of magnetic properties, and the other, at about 900, is accompanied by a considerable evolution of heat. A third transformation of iron near 1300 has been discovered since by Ball. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Download or read book High Temperature Measurement by Electric Means Classic Reprint written by Maurice Leroy Carr and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High Temperature Measurement by Electric Means The accurate measurement of high temperatures has come to be a very essential feature of many industrial pro cesses. The pyrometer makes it possible to reproduce with precision any temperature that has been found to yield the best results in Operations requiring careful heat treatment. In the making of tinted glass, for example, the preper regu lation of the temperature of the furnace is necessary to pre vent burning out the color. Instead of depending upon the workman to judge of the condition of the material with his eye, the manufacturer gives instructions to maintain the heat at a certain temperature, knowing then that the output will be of a certain uniform grade. In this manner the variable human element is eliminated and waste prevented. The temper ing of tools, the burning of ceramic products, the Operation of gas producers, the manufacture of iron and steel and the annealing of castings are a few examples of processes that may be carried on to better advantage with the aid of refined methods of measuring high temperatures. The recording pyro meter is rapidly coming into use as an efficient means of eu pervising processes requiring heat treatment. Book Methods of Measuring Temperature Classic Reprint

Download or read book Methods of Measuring Temperature Classic Reprint written by Ezer Griffiths and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 202 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods of Measuring Temperature The present volume is written for those concerned with the measurement of temperature, whether in scientific investigations or in the control of industrial operations. Attention has been devoted chiefly to the experimental basis of the methods in general use, the calibration of the instruments, and the precautions which must be observed in practice. While the volume is complete, in itself, it is assumed that the reader is conversant with the fundamental principles of physics, and the aim has been to extend the general treatment given in standard text-books, such as those of Poynting and Thomson. It was not deemed desirable to devote much space to descriptions of the constructional details of pyrometers, since the information is readily accessible in the catalogues of the manufacturers. A connected account is given of the classical researches with the gas thermometer, which have established, in a concrete form, the absolute scale of temperature over the range -200 to 1550 C. And it is well to remember that although the electrical and radiation methods enable "relative" measurements to be made with a high degree of precision, they are dependent on the gas thermometer work for their evaluation in terms of the fundamental scale of temperature. In subsequent chapters the various types of pyrometers are dealt with individually, the theory underlying the method and the calibration of the instrument. An attempt has been made to set out clearly the errors to which pyrometric observations are liable, when the conditions of use do not comply with those postulated by the theory upon which the design is based; particularly in the case of instruments of the "radiation" type. The illustrations have been prepared by Mr. Edgar A. Griffiths, and the writer wishes to acknowledge his indebtedness to his brother for his contributions to the work. The descriptions of the apparatus in use at the National Physical Laboratory have been inserted with the kind permission of the Director, Sir Richard Glazebrook. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Heat Treatment of High-Temperature Mercurial Thermometers Thus, if a thermometer is intended to read true gas scale tempera tures, either the length of a degree must be changed at 'the higher points, as is generally done in working standards, or proper correo tions must be applied. Toward the end of this paper a method is outlined for graduating a thermometer to read gas scale temperature. Book Pyrometry

Download or read book Pyrometry written by Chas R. Darling and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Pyrometry: A Practical Treatise on the Measurement of High Temperatures The next step in advance was the introduction of the expansion pyrometer by John Daniel] in 1822. The elongation Of a platinum rod, encased in plum bago, was made to operate a magnifying device, which moved a pointer over a scale divided so as to read temperatures directly. Although inaccurate as com pared with modern instruments; this pyrometer was the first to give a continuous reading, and required no personal attention. The expansion pyrometer - with different expanding substances - is still used to. A limited extent. The year 1822 was also marked by Seebeck's discovery of thermo-electricity. The generation Of a current of electricity by a heated junction Of two metals, increasing with the temperature, appeared to afford a simple and satisfactory basis for a pyrometer, and Becquerel constructed an instrument on these lines in 1826. Pouillet and others also endeavoured to measure temperatures by the thermo-electric method, but partly owing to the use of unsuitable junctions, and partly to the lack of reliable galvanometers, these workers failed to Obtain concordant results. The method was for all practical purposes abandoned until 1886, when its revival in reliable form led to the enormous extension Of the use of pyrometers witnessed during recent years. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Measurement of Surface Temperatures Two types of contact thermometers are described 1n this paper, and the results of temperature measurements made on the rolls of paper and milk drying machines with one of the contact thermometers are also given. The surface temperatures of moving rolls have been determined to an accuracy of 2° F. By means of a compensated con tact thermometer. Attempts to determine the approximate temperature of the sur face of the moving rolls by employing fusible substances proved successful on clean, dry surfaces but were unsuccessful when applied to surfaces carrying foreign or contaminating materials.
