Book Recrystallization and Related Annealing Phenomena

Download or read book Recrystallization and Related Annealing Phenomena written by F.J. Humphreys and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The annealing of deformed materials is of both technological importance and scientific interest. The phenomena have been most widely studied in metals, although they occur in all crystalline materials such as the natural deformation of rocks and the processing of technical ceramics. Research is mainly driven by the requirements of industry, and where appropriate, the book discusses the extent to which we are able to formulate quantitative, physically-based models which can be applied to metal-forming processes. The subjects treated in this book are all active research areas, and form a major part of at least four regular international conference series. However, there have only been two monographs published in recent times on the subject of recrystallization, the latest nearly 20 years ago. Since that time, considerable advances have been made, both in our understanding of the subject and in the techniques available to the researcher. The book covers recovery, recrystallization and grain growth in depth including specific chapters on ordered materials, two-phase alloys, annealing textures and annealing during and after hot working. Also contained are treatments of the deformed state and the structure and mobility of grain boundaries, technologically important examples and a chapter on computer simulation and modelling. The book provides a scientific treatment of the subject for researchers or students in Materials Science, Metallurgy and related disciplines, who require a more detailed coverage than is found in textbooks on physical metallurgy, and a more coherent treatment than will be found in the many conference proceedings and review articles.

Book Handbook of Metallurgical Process Design

Download or read book Handbook of Metallurgical Process Design written by George E. Totten and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2004-05-25 with total page 992 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reviewing an extensive array of procedures in hot and cold forming, casting, heat treatment, machining, and surface engineering of steel and aluminum, this comprehensive reference explores a vast range of processes relating to metallurgical component design-enhancing the production and the properties of engineered components while reducing manufacturing costs. It surveys the role of computer simulation in alloy design and its impact on material structure and mechanical properties such as fatigue and wear. It also discusses alloy design for various materials, including steel, iron, aluminum, magnesium, titanium, super alloy compositions and copper.

Book Deformation and Failure Mechanisms of a Modified Commercial Aluminum Alloy at Elevated Temperatures

Download or read book Deformation and Failure Mechanisms of a Modified Commercial Aluminum Alloy at Elevated Temperatures written by William Paul Green and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Superplastic aluminum alloys have been the subject of recent research in the automotive industry for several reasons. First, the formability of such alloys under superplastic forming (SPF) conditions is quite good; second, the potential weight reduction associated with formed aluminum sheet as compared to traditional steel sheet is particularly important for automotive applications. Unfortunately, SPF-grade aluminum is relatively expensive, and the typical SPF process is expensive and time-consuming because of the high temperatures and slow strain rates involved. The present study investigates the potential for forming AA5083, the most common commercial alloy for SPF operations, at reduced temperatures and increased strain-rates. The deformation and failure mechanisms under these conditions are examined in a modified AA5083 material and are compared with data from unmodified AA5083. A new method of presenting creep transient data is presented and is used to determine deformation mechanisms at elevated temperatures. A modified AA5083 alloy produced by continuous casting (CC), and containing a small addition of Cu, was studied. This small addition of Cu causes the formation of Mg2Cu and MgCu2 intermetallic particles, which produce incipient melting. It is proposed that these low-melting-temperature phases may reside at grain boundaries and enhance grain-boundary sliding at low temperatures, which may explain the improved ductility of the Cu-containing alloy. Ductility variations for the Cu-containing alloy are also explored. The differences in tensile ductility between the Cu-containing AA5083 and unmodified AA5083 materials, produced by both CC and direct-chill (DC) casting, are related to differences in cavitation behavior. The final part of the present work is a study on the effect of various heat treatment schedules on the constituent particle distribution in AA5083. It is shown that a simple one-day aging treatment at a moderate temperature can effectively reduce the interparticle spacing. This may lead to a finer recrystallized grain size [1] and, thus, improve superplastic properties.

Book The Brittle Ductile Transition in Rocks

Download or read book The Brittle Ductile Transition in Rocks written by Al G. Duba and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1990 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 56. "The roses seem to have a mildew," Lucy said as I drank my morning coffee. "I'll ask Hugh about it," flashed through my mind, but not past my lips since he's been dead for over two years. I wonder if this isn't typical for his friends and colleagues. Hugh's ability and willingness to help, his unselfish cooperation not just in research but in life, are what made him special to those who worked closely with him. Many who read this volume are familiar with the varied contributions he made to rock mechanics and to high?]pressure research. Consistent with his reputation, the things that impressed me when I first worked with Hugh in 1969 were his enthusiasm for work and his ability to keep pressure systems working well. Although these qualities still come to mind when I think of Hugh, the thing that usually remains is a warm feeling of pleasure at having been his friend and shared part of his life.
