This book was released on 2005-07-07 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the discovery of high-temperature superconductors, research into polarons and bipolarons has attracted much attention. This book is the first standard reference to give a comprehensive view of the polaron and bipolaron theory of high-temperature superconductivity, one of the most significant discoveries in physics in the past decade. Scientists have also observed polarons and bipolarons in magnetic semiconductors and transition metal oxides. The thorough investigation of these nonsuperconducting materials has contributed greatly to our basic understanding of the physical properties of both polarons and bipolarons. This book contains a series of authoritative articles on the most advanced research on polarons and bipolarons in high-temperature superconductors and related materials. This book will be of great interest to researchers in condensed matter physics, and especially those working in the field of superconductivity.

Book Physics of Transition Metal Oxides

Download or read book Physics of Transition Metal Oxides written by Sadamichi Maekawa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-09 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fact that magnetite (Fe304) was already known in the Greek era as a peculiar mineral is indicative of the long history of transition metal oxides as useful materials. The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in 1986 has renewed interest in transition metal oxides. High-temperature su perconductors are all cuprates. Why is it? To answer to this question, we must understand the electronic states in the cuprates. Transition metal oxides are also familiar as magnets. They might be found stuck on the door of your kitchen refrigerator. Magnetic materials are valuable not only as magnets but as electronics materials. Manganites have received special attention recently because of their extremely large magnetoresistance, an effect so large that it is called colossal magnetoresistance (CMR). What is the difference between high-temperature superconducting cuprates and CMR manganites? Elements with incomplete d shells in the periodic table are called tran sition elements. Among them, the following eight elements with the atomic numbers from 22 to 29, i. e. , Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni and Cu are the most im portant. These elements make compounds with oxygen and present a variety of properties. High-temperature superconductivity and CMR are examples. Most of the textbooks on magnetism discuss the magnetic properties of transition metal oxides. However, when one studies magnetism using tradi tional textbooks, one finds that the transport properties are not introduced in the initial stages.

Book Transition Metal Oxides

Download or read book Transition Metal Oxides written by P. A. Cox and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 1992 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transition metal oxides form a series of compounds with a uniquely wide range of electronic properties. They have important applications as dielectrics, semiconductors, and metals, and as materials for magnetic and optical uses. The recent discovery of high-temperature superconductors has brought the attention of a wide scientific community to this area, and has highlighted the problems involved in trying to understand transition metal oxides. The present book is not primarily about high Tc superconductors, although their properties are discussed in the final section. The main aim is to describe the varied electronic behavior shown by transition metal oxides, and to discuss the different types of theoretical models that have been proposed to interpret it. It is intended to provide an introduction to this fascinating and complex field, at a level suitable for graduate students and other research workers with a background in solid-state chemistry or physics.

Book High Tc Superconductors

Download or read book High Tc Superconductors written by Harald W. Weber and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 343 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two years conferences on superconductivity have been characterized by the attendance of hundreds of scientists. Consequently, the organizers were forced to schedule numerous parallel sessions and poster presentations with an almost unsurveyable amount of information. It was, therefore, felt that a more informal get-together, providing ample time for a thourough discussion of some topics of current interest in high-temperature superconductivity, was timely and benefitial for leading scientists as well as for newcomers in the field. The present volume contains the majority of papers presented at the International Discussion Meeting on High-Tc Superconductors held at the Mauterndorf Castle in the Austrian Alps from February 7 to 11, 1988. Each subject was introduced in review form by a few invited speakers and then discussed together with the contributed poster presentations. These discussion sessions chaired by selected scientists turned out to be the highlights of the meeting, not only because all the participants truly appreciated the possibility of an information exchange, but mainly because of the magnificent job done by the discussion chairmen, John A. Mydosh (Leiden), Martin Peter (Geneva) and Ken E. Gray (Argonne). First results on the just discovered Bi-superconductors and the clarification of electron resonance experiments on (123)-compounds should be mentioned in particular. The relaxed atomosphere favoring free discussions was certainly promoted by the surroundings offered in the Mauterndorf Castle, which dates back to 1253. Poster presentations and a conference banquet in historic knight's halls are certainly not found everyday in conference routines.

Special attention is also paid to interface superconductivity. In addition to superconductors, the volume also addresses materials related to polar and multifunctional ground states, another class of materials that owes its discovery to Prof. Müller's ground-breaking research on SrTiO3.

Book The Gap Symmetry and Fluctuations in High Tc Superconductors

Download or read book The Gap Symmetry and Fluctuations in High Tc Superconductors written by Julien Bok and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-03-07 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery in 1986 of high temperature superconductors by J. G. Bednorz and K. A. Müller, a considerable progress has been made and several important scientific problems have emerged. Within this NATO Advanced Study Institute our intention was to focus mainly on the controversial topic of the symmetry of the superconducting gap and given the very short coherence length, the role of fluctuations. The Institute on ‘The Gap Symmetry and Fluctuations in High- Superconductors’ took place in the “Institut d’Etudes Scientifiques de Cargèse” in Corsica, France, between 1 - 13 September 1997. The 110 participantsfrom 18 countries (yet 30 nationalities) including 23 full time lecturers, have spent two memorable weeks in this charming Mediterranean resort. All lecturers were asked to prepare pedagogical papers to clearly present the central physical idea behind specific model or experiment. The better understanding of physics of high temperature superconductivity is certainly needed to guide the development of applications of these materials in high and weak current devices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How new are the high Tc superconductors, as compared to the conventional low Tc ones? In what sense are these oxides different from regular metals in their normal state? How different is the mechanism for high Tc superconductivity from the well-known electron-phonon interaction that explains so well superconductivity in metals and alloys? What are the implications of the new features of the high Tc oxides for their practical applications? This interesting book aims to provide some answers to those questions, drawing particularly on similarities between the high Tc oxides and granular superconductors, which also present a short coherence length and a small superfluid density.
