Book High School Principals Perspectives

Download or read book High School Principals Perspectives written by Richard Caldwell and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyze high school principals’ perceptions on what it takes to teach all students equitably. More specifically, it focused on which teacher characteristics are advantageous in order to teach all students, regardless of students’ socioeconomic status, gender, ability, or race. In order to answer this question, I investigated the perceptions of high school principals in regard to what they think their teachers need to know and do, as well as what dispositions they need to have in order to teach all students equitably. This question was analyzed using interviews of 11 high school principals from three school districts in northern California. The analysis included the development of a continuum of understanding in regard to what teachers need to know and do, and what dispositions they should have in order to teach all students equitably. Results showed that principals have differing understandings of what it takes to teach all students. The discussion included a detailed plan about the implementation of a high- performance policy framework that can serve as a guide to facilitate changes to professional development programs, administrator and teacher preparation programs, and administrative and teacher evaluations.

Book Portraits of the High School Principal

Download or read book Portraits of the High School Principal written by Margo Adkins and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Education reform has increased accountability measures for principals to ensure all students are achieving. Although student achievement should be the primary focus of a principal, the various responsibilities of the principalship can overshadow instruction. Due to the large number of students, multitude of course offerings, extra-curricular activities, discipline, and operational issues, many high school principals are inundated with responsibilities and challenges that may cause less time to be allocated to curriculum and instruction. These multiple responsibilities can also lead to principal burnout and high turnover rates. To understand how high school principals managed their time to ensure curriculum and instruction was a priority, a qualitative study was conducted. The researcher collected and analyzed data from semi-structured interviews, observations, and documents. The portraiture methodology was then employed to create portraits that would provide a realistic perspective of the high school principal's experience. The instructional principals in this study each had a co-principal to manage the principalship. This structure should have guaranteed curriculum and instruction would be a priority. However, there were still challenges that would disrupt the focus from instruction. Even with the division of responsibilities, principals felt ownership for anything that transpired on the campus. In spite of the demanding time requirements of the high school principalship, the leaders in this study were very dedicated to the role and student achievement.

Book Principals Perspectives on Adolescent Literacy Implementation and Support in Secondary Schools

Download or read book Principals Perspectives on Adolescent Literacy Implementation and Support in Secondary Schools written by Jack A. Robinson and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, interview data were analyzed to illustrate the perspectives of five secondary school principals in adolescent literacy implementation and support. These principals fell on the continuum from beginning practitioners in adolescent literacy to "seasoned veterans." They were selected based on the recommendations of their district's assistant superintendents and/or curriculum directors. I interviewed two high school principals, two middle school principals, and one junior high school principal. Much emphasis has been placed over the last several decades on improving the reading skills of elementary school children, especially in the primary grades. While this goal continues to be an important one, less attention has been paid to the reading needs of adolescents than at the elementary level. Adolescent literacy programs need to be implemented in secondary schools. The school principal plays a key role in implementing and supporting all educational initiatives in the school. Unfortunately, there are few directions or guidelines for principals to follow for adolescent literacy implementation and support. Analysis of the data yielded seven common strands. These strands were then viewed through a sociocultural lens, specifically indicating the influence of the student's experiences, the family, the classroom, the school, and the community on literacy learning. I found that the principal played a key role in adolescent literacy implementation and support in these five schools. I also found that each principal extensively utilized the expertise of his or her faculties-as well as that of the support staff and communities-to determine direction of adolescent literacy programs and practices.

Book excerpt: This report offers the conclusions of a 1983 EPCOT symposium on education and the Information Age involving distinguished national experts and 46 secondary school principals from across the country. Discussed in the first section on "The Demands of an Information Age" are a number of transitions, including current shifts from an industrial to an information work force, from a national to a global economy, and from a centralized to a decentralized society. Section 2, "The Future World of Work," includes a list of new technology-related occupations for the 1990's and reviews prospects for non-technology jobs, preparation for the 21st century, and business-education partnerships. In the following section, "High Tech is Here to Stay," the authors examine current uses and needs for computers in the classroom, the need for a definition of computer literacy, and gaining high tech acceptance. Exploring the "people side" of high tech, section 4 focuses on computer-aided instruction and professional development. Section 5's "action agenda" for creating high tech schools makes step-by-step recommendations for program implementation and discusses the role of the principal in realizing each step. The document concludes with a list of EPCOT conference participants. (JBM)

Book Quandaries of School Leadership

Download or read book Quandaries of School Leadership written by Debra J. Touchton and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-08-16 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides insights into the everyday practices of school leaders as told through the real-life stories of principals. The editors and their contributors blend practice with theory, helping aspiring leaders to discover that school leadership is not simply putting prescribed solutions into action, but a constant encounter with quandaries that demand thinking, responding, and adjusting to the situations at hand. Readers build their capacities to view quandaries from multiple lenses, consider a variety of responses, and draw conclusions based on perspectives that may vary from those initially identified. The chapter authors encourage a sharper self-awareness of what scholars value and envision about education, encouraging them to think about how to navigate decision-making through a variety of theoretical frameworks and practices while balancing their own leadership platform development.

Book Addressing the Discipline Gap

Download or read book Addressing the Discipline Gap written by Eleanor T. Coleman and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This qualitative, causal-comparative study examines the perspectives of middle-grades principals and assistant principals concerning school discipline, with the purpose of determining if these perspectives could be associated with a "zero tolerance" philosophy of managing students' behavior. Zero tolerance, which is based on the belief that increasing the consequence of major and minor offenses improves students' behavior, has been shown to contribute to the rise in school suspensions since its inception in the early 1990s. Research confirms that this practice negatively affects African American students, particularly African American boys; the urban Minnesota school district studied has a high rate of such suspensions. The study's objectives were (a) to gain a sense of the perceptions of principals towards school discipline; (b) to explore the extent to which principals' attitudes and perspectives were related to disciplinary outcomes in the middle grades; and (c) to determine principals' receptiveness toward prevention strategies that serve as a deterrent to exclusionary practices (practices that result in loss of instructional time in the classroom). The survey instrument used was the Disciplinary Practices Scale. Data from this study indicated that principals' perspectives could be split into two clusters: prevention orientation, and exclusion orientation. These findings are consistent with other studies that have examined the increasing use of exclusion practices as a means of managing school discipline.

Book Walk Away in the Sunshine

Download or read book Walk Away in the Sunshine written by Phyllis DiGiacomo Dunnam and published by . This book was released on 2003-10-01 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Everyone wants to improve schooling. We are going to tell you some real-life war stories about one high school principal's journey through the maze of secondary education. You will meet students, parents, teachers, principals, superintendents, and school boards, all trying hard but often working at cross-purposes and getting in one another's way. In these stories the good guys win some and lose some, and some get rained out. But they all shed light on the murky world of educational theory and the way it works out in the real world. The author, a former teacher and high school principal, has some strong, well-documented opinions about what real education ought to look like. Her purpose is not to increase polarization but to figure out what went wrong and is still going wrong, and why these things sometimes work. Finally, she offers a prescription that trumps the Back-to-Basics movement by exploring what the real basics are and offering a vision of what schools could be.

Book Achieving Work Life Balance Perspectives of Female Principals

Download or read book Achieving Work Life Balance Perspectives of Female Principals written by Brandy Bray Corbett and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nine semi-structured, face-to-face interviews were conducted to examine and explore how seven middle and two high school female principals in Georgia achieved balance among and enjoyment in the four life quadrants of work, family, friends, and self. The results from this qualitative, phenomenological investigation confirm the challenging, dynamic, and demanding occupational stressors associated with 21st school leadership; describe the participants’ lived experiences as they relate to the confluence of family commitments and the responsibilities of the principalship; communicate the physical and psychological impact of the principal’s role on holistic health, and the coping strategies implemented to manage occupational and personal stressors; and discuss how a shift in the ideology and mindset of district leaders could support female middle and high school principals. Findings from this investigation describe the specific methods the participants utilized to nurture themselves physically, emotionally, and spiritually. Conclusions and recommendations for district leaders and school systems are included for consideration as educational stakeholders work to create collaborative partnerships with current and aspiring female leaders. This investigation provides rich, descriptive insights into the unique stressors experienced by female middle and high school principals and their collective worldview on the “essence of stress and work-life balance” for the secondary administrator.

Book International Perspectives on Leading Low Performing Schools

Download or read book International Perspectives on Leading Low Performing Schools written by Coby V. Meyers and published by IAP. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research is clear: School leadership quality matters. However, our knowledge of effective school leadership remains limited in at least three substantial ways. First, our understanding of school leadership effectiveness generally and school principal effectiveness specifically is limited to Western contexts, primarily North America and western European ones. Second, even in the confines of Western research and context, there has been relatively little specific focus on effectively leading low-performing schools. Third, even the conceptualization of leadership—do we mean the school principal, an administrative team, or a broader school leadership team—is a key factor in how we define and respond to the challenge of leading in low-performing schools. This book advances discussion and disseminates knowledge and global perspectives on what school leadership looks like, how it is enacted and under what circumstances, and when or where lessons might be portable. We anticipate this book having wide appeal for researchers, policymakers, and practitioners considering school leadership and how to support it effectively. The chapters suggest a noticeable level of convergence globally on how to lead low-performing schools effectively. Yet, there are clear political and culture differences that add significant gradation to how school leaders might enact best practice locally or inform policymakers and systems leaders about how to set up school leaders for success and subsequently support them. This book is one of the first that prioritizes the universality and nuance of leading low-performing schools globally.

Book Thinking Outside a Shifting Box

Download or read book Thinking Outside a Shifting Box written by Sharon E. Watkins and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The accountability era ushered in by the No Child Left Behind of 2001 dramatically increased the complexity of the role of public school principals and changed the context in which principals do their work. This qualitative case study focused on the lived experiences of 10 public high school principals, five traditional and five charter school leaders, serving under the competitive policy frameworks of No Child Left Behind and federal and state innovation grant programs (e.g., RttT) during the years 2008 to 2015. Three distinct studies revealed (a) principals’ perspectives on the complexity of the role, the impact of competition, accountability and innovation policies, and how the role has expanded, (b) how they perceived and employed innovative strategies to achieve their goals, and (c) emerging themes in the role including the need to negotiate new, complex, sometimes contradictory relational and political networks, manage the term failure in regard to school success, and develop a significant practice of distributed leadership to achieve their goals. The research design employed semistructured interviews and analysis of relevant documents, government records or other publicly available resources. Principal preparation programs, future administrators, and policymakers may benefit from understanding how these leaders led through the shift into 21st century public education in the United States by enacting policies in an increasingly complex, competitive policy environment. This study addressed a gap in the literature by analyzing practitioner point of view as it examined the impact of historic federal and state accountability and innovation policy convergence on the role and context of public high school principals between the years of 2008 and 2015.
