Download or read book High School English Book One Classic Reprint written by A. R. Brubacher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-16 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English Book One The chapter on Conversations about Books seeks to ih dicate a method for classroom discussions about the books prescribed for the work in literature. The authors believe that reading for pleasure is the chief aim of the literature work, and that the books should therefore be discussed from this point of view. They believe that the class dis eussions should be familiar conversations confined to topics of interest to young people. They would therefore leave the minute analysis of books for style and structure to the fourth high school year or to the college class. Such mi unties, if admitted at all, should be purely incidental. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A First Book in English for High Schools One of the reasons for the publication of A first book IN english is the belief On the part of the authors and the publishers that a better text of this kind is needed one that is thoroughly adapted to use in the majority of American high schools. To write such a book has been the purpose of the authors, who have brought to the work years of classroom experience in the teaching of English composition to pupils of the junior and the senior high school ages. Principles. Throughout the first book IN english the authors have kept clearly in mind the fundamental problems of English com position: (i) The problem of something to speak or write about; (2) the problems of gathering, evaluating, and organizing material; (3) the problems of expressing thoughts correctly, clearly, sincerely, and pleasingly; and (4) the problem of adapting what is spoken or written to a definite audience or to a definite body of readers. An ex amination of the lessons in this book will Show that these fundamentals have been made basic considerations. Nowhere in the book is there a discussion of the principles of unity, coherence, and emphasis as such. At the same time, the habit of ex pressing unified thoughts coherently and with emphasis is fixed through practice. The pupil learns to present unified, coherent, well-emphasized thoughts by learning through practice to express thoughts that he has first carefully selected, organized, and evaluated. The young pupil should not be confused with abstractions. He must learn by doing. Throughout the book the developing interests and abilities of boys and girls are carefully gauged and considered. Book Recommended English Readings for High Schools Classic Reprint

Download or read book Recommended English Readings for High Schools Classic Reprint written by Rowena Keith Keyes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-12 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Recommended English Readings for High Schools The purpose of this book is to provide for each half year in the four years of the high school course a list of books adapted to the age of the pupils and so grouped as to suggest a special interest every term. Conditions vary so widely, that teachers will often wish to direct their pupils in one term to the groups suggested for another term. No book can take the place of per sonal contact between teacher and pupil. It has seemed, how ever, in the main, that much time could be saved for busy teachers by providing for every pupil an outline such as this. Dictation of lists is a waste of class time; copying posted lists is a waste of pupils' time outside of class. Questions will naturally arise as to the reason for choosing certain groups for certain terms. While the arrangement is not intended to be hard and fast, and the Index will make it easy for the teacher to select groups in whatever order be desires, there have been definite purposes in view. This book in the Open Door English Series is in tended for the first year in the junior high school or for the seventh grade in the elementary school. It endeavors to make a sound, stimulating, and practical approach to the study of English and to provide a thorough training in the subject. The Open Door point of View. One of the most marked ad vances made in education within the past few years concerns the pupils' attitude toward their work. This book, in accordance with this advance, bases its lessons on the actual needs of youth, and makes it possible for each pupil to solve his own problems and make rapid progress in acquiring facility in speaking and writing. In its deeply grounded, true Americanism, it provides equal opportunity for everyone in a class, no matter what his native endowment may be, and, in so doing wins a pupil's co-opera tion and eliminates wasted effort that comes from working against a pupil rather than with him. Book Complete English Grammar

Download or read book Complete English Grammar written by Eli J. Hoenshel and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-28 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Complete English Grammar: For Common and High Schools This text-book of grammar has been thoroughly revised and entirely reset in new type. It forms a complete book, containing in one volume the work usually found in books on language lessons and English grammar. The book is divided into four parts, each of which is a course by itself. The first three parts treat of the same subjects, but each gives a more comprehensive treatment than the preceding. The work of the ordi nary school is completed in Part Three. Part Four deals only with the most difficult topics and those about which authors do not agree. The author has no sympathy with the notion that technical terms in grammar should not be used until the pupil has reached the upper grades. He can see no reason why children cannot learn and understand the terms nazm and wm, for instance, as easily as name' wom' and action-word. Therefore, technical work will be found in Part One, gradually becoming more dith cult as the pupil advances, until in Part Four will be found about all the technical work required for any examination. Book English in the High School And What to Teach in Poetry Classic Reprint

Download or read book English in the High School And What to Teach in Poetry Classic Reprint written by Albert Granberry Reed and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-09 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English in the High School, And, What to Teach in Poetry The fourth aim suggested is to develop in the pupil a fuller appreciation of good literature and increasing appreciation of the fullness of life. This aim is frequently lost sight of by the teacher of composition. To be sure, it can not be measured as easily as the three aims just considered. But if composi tion is taught successfully the pupil will appreciate more fully the great masterpieces, and he will see new meaning in life and in external nature. The mere fact that he can construct a good sentence or paragraph will help him to value aright the sentence and paragraph structure of Macaulay and Stevenson. So also a description of a character from life or of some phase of external nature, and the narration of events that happen every day, will increase his interest in the world in which he lives. Writing about things gives one a fuller realization and appreciation of the things themselves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-12-23 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School's Cure of Souls Nor can the over-intellectualism of the university graduate be a surprize to any one who realizes the vast transformation from the older type of American college, with its deep ethical and religious character, to the university of today with its intense specialized teaching and study on the one hand, and its absorbing athletic and social life on the other - a trans formation pictured with power and fidelity by Mr. Clarence F. Birdseye in his really great book, Individual training in our colleges. What the American high school needs is just what English Rugby needed and what the immortal Arnold gave it thru his teaching and example, and as Hughes says, above all thru his unwearied zeal in creating moral thoughtfulness in every boy with whom he came into personal contact.1 Woe unto the land if its future leaders lack moral thoughtfulness in its fullest sense: both the righteous intent and the practical wis dom; only by these two elements combined in our statesmen and citizens can the republic be saved and the nation fulfil its destiny. This book was released on 2015-07-16 with total page 652 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Hand-Book of English Literature Intended for the Use of High Schools: As Well as a Companion and Guide for Private Students, and for General Readers The author of this work, having been appointed to pre pare a course of reading in English Literature for the Latin School in Boston, was induced, after the adoption Of the plan, to enlarge and perfect it, in order to supply an acknowledged want in popular education. It is not expected that this, or any compilation, no matter how full and exhaustive, will be sufficient for the thorough student. It is undoubtedly wise, as a rule, to insist upon studying authors in their complete works; beyond question this is the only way to gain an adequate notion of an author's power and of his command of English; and no one knows so well as the perplexed compiler how hard it is, if he would keep within the proper limits, to do any justice to the authors whose essays and poems he must mutilate, as mineralogists crack fossils or geodes, for specimens. Book High School English Book One

Download or read book High School English Book One written by A. R. Brubacher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-14 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School English Book One The purpose of this book is to unify the teaching of English in the high school. English as a school study is more than grammar, more than composition, more than literature. It is a judicious combination of these three component parts. The authors feel that their work justifies itself only in so far as it gives grammar its rightful place in the study of English, treats composition as self-expression in language, and makes the reading of the books prescribed in English literature a profitable recreation. Every child acquires the power of speech by unconscious imitation of the mother tongue. Since the model of imitation in America is frequently ungrammatical, the English of the average American child is frequently ungrammatical unless conscious correction and self-cultivation in language make it correct. It must therefore be the purpose of English teaching to give a norm by which the acquired speech habits may be corrected, by which the acquired language may be adjusted to the language of the writers and speakers of good English. This adjustment may be made in part by imitation of correct models, but grammar must always remain the touchstone by which correctness is judged. Even the models must be examined for grammatical values. In the treatment of composition the authors have sought to shift the point of emphasis from literary composition to the practice of self-expression by means of language. Book English High School Record Vol 40

Download or read book English High School Record Vol 40 written by Abraham M. Aloff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English High School Record, Vol. 40: Humor Issue, April 1925 A New York college professor would have us believe that Slowly but surely mirth is losing its place as one of the factors affecting human life; that in the future we shall no longer be diverted from our everyday tasks by a jest; that humor is an unnecessary and even a harmful thing, since it slows down the machinery of the world's work. It is a sad prospect that lies before us. No longer Shall we smile (or roar, as the case may be) at the antics of the Irishman and the Jew, or be entertained by the dialogue between the two inebriates. Such delights are no longer in store for us. Without venturing to match our opinions against those of the learned gentle man from New York, we think that not soon will the condition prevail which is described above. The world needs humor to lighten the burden of its humdrum tasks, to afford a bit of sunshine to relieve the tension of worldly pursuits. Once humor is done away with as a human quality, there can be no incentive to work, for man works that he may enjoy the fruits of his work, and what are these fruits but the ability to indulge in pleasure, an extension of humor? We do not think that the world need worry about the loss of its healthful fun. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Class of 1870: English High School Building rests in my eye now; the tall building, rearing its granite front between those even more ambitious, which shut out the much-needed light and air; and then inside, - well, all of us in '70 know the inside from roof to foundation. Did not the R. Society meet in the cellar Well, they can describe its exits and entrances; and the circular stairway, with its well in the centre, where we used to drop in fact, anything, on the heads below; the scarred, notched, and battered railing; the wide, airy hall at the top, and the dark, dirty rooms below; the master's desk on the right, the sink in the left hand corner, and the hard-used blackboard on two sides are they not all familiar to us? But not to you, oh high school boy of the future. Light and elegance, and air and beauty; these will be your portion, and only see that you appreciate it, and do not let them pamper your education from you, but if you must know that to your fathers education was a stern duty, and in comfortless rooms, bare of ornament save such little marks as er ratic sponges or other missiles might have left on the walls, they garnered the wisdom which has made them plan out and realize, as they will, the splendid edifice which caught my eye and caused the opening of this sketch. And now to you, dear classmates, the writer turns, to revel with you in the scenes closely allied to the old school-house; to take you back to the dear old times, and leave to posterity a record, as far as it is pos sible to compile one, of the doings of the Class of 1870, written not consecutively, not chronologically, but as they come into the writer's mind, but always written without envy and without malice. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English High School Record, Vol. 38: February, 1923 At the beginning of this term, the boys of each room in the main building chose from among their number a Student Council Elector. A short time later, these Electors met and selected three members of each class and three teachers, who, with the athletic coach and the instructor in military drill, were to compose the council of this school. At the time, everyone appeared to realize the benefits to be derived from such a council, and all were enthusiastic about it. Since that time, however, we Seem to have lost interest in the council and its doings. Time after time Ihave heard such expressions as, Why isn't-something done about - and I must admit that there are conditions in the school which ought to be changed. But wondering about them will do no good. The sure way to have something done is to tell one of the councillors. It is his desire and his duty to help you.
