Book High Reynolds Number Turbulence

Download or read book High Reynolds Number Turbulence written by and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objectives of the grant were to provide a systematic study to fill the gap between existing research on low Reynolds number turbulent flows to the kinds of turbulent flows encountered on full-scale vehicles. We report specifically on (1) the behavior of wakes at high Reynolds numbers with increasing complexity, varying from axisymmetric wakes, to wakes typical of appended undersea platforms; and (2) the effects of roughness at high Reynolds numbers. We have gained a better understanding of complex flow interactions in wakes typical of naval platform flow fields, especially wakes with concentrated regions of streamwise vorticity. We have also made progress in the understanding of high Reynolds number flows over rough surfaces, especially pipes and flat plates with roughness that relate to marine surfaces. We expect these studies to lead to improved flow prediction and improved flow control. The work was performed in two unique facilities: the Superpipe and the High Reynolds number Test Facility (HRTF) that can obtain very high Reynolds numbers on a laboratory scale using compressed air as the working fluid.

Book High Reynolds Number Flows Using Liquid and Gaseous Helium

Download or read book High Reynolds Number Flows Using Liquid and Gaseous Helium written by Russell J. Donnelly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 283 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Liquid helium has been studied for its intrinsic interest through much of the 20th century. In the past decade, much has been learned about heat transfer in liquid helium because of the need to cool superconducting magnets and other devices. The topic of the Seventh Oregon Conference on Low Temperature Physics was an applied one, namely the use of liquid and gaseous helium to generate high Reynolds number flows. The low kinematic viscosity of liquid helium automatically makes high Reynolds numbers accessible and the question addressed in this conference was to explore various possibilities to see what practical devices might be built using liquid or gaseous helium. There are a number of possibilities: construction of a wind tunnel using critical helium gas, free surface testing, low speed flow facilities using helium I and helium ll. At the time of the conference, most consideration had been given to the last possibility because it seemed both possible and useful to build a flow facility which could reach unprecedented Reynolds numbers. Such a device could be useful in pure research for studying turbulence, and in applied research for testing models much as is done in a water tunnel. In order to examine these possibilities in detail, we invited a wide range of experts to Eugene in October 1989 to present papers on their own specialties and to listen to presentations on the liquid helium proposals.

Book Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Boundary Layer with Uniform Blowing at Moderate and High Reynolds Numbers

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of Turbulent Boundary Layer with Uniform Blowing at Moderate and High Reynolds Numbers written by Gazi Hasanuzzaman and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2022-01-18 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Experimental investigation in turbulent boundary layer flows represents one of the canonical geometries of wall bounded shear flows. Utmost relevance of such experiments, however, is applied in the engineering applications in aerospace and marine industries. In particular, continuous effort is being imparted to explore the underlying physics of the flow in order to develop models for numerical tools and to achieve flow control. Flow control experiments have been widely investigated since 1930’s. Several flow control technique has been explored and have shown potential benefit. But the choice of control technique depends largely on the boundary condition and the type of application. Hence, friction drag of subsonic transport aircraft is intended to be reduced within the scope of this Ph. D. topic. Therefore, application of active control method such as microblowing effect in the incompressible, zero pressure gradient turbulent boundary layer was investigated. A series of experiments have been performed in two different wind tunnel facilities. Wind tunnel from Department of Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics (LAS) was used for the measurements for moderate Reynolds number range in co-operation with the wind tunnel from Laboratoire de M´ecanique de Feiret Lille for large Reynolds number range. Measurements are conducted with the help of state-of-the-art techniques such as Laser Doppler Anemometry, Particle Image Velocimetry and electronic pressure sensors.

Book Behaviour of Energetic Coherent Structures in Turbulent Pipe Flow at High Reynolds Numbers

Download or read book Behaviour of Energetic Coherent Structures in Turbulent Pipe Flow at High Reynolds Numbers written by Zeinab Hallol and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2021-10-26 with total page 146 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, coherent turbulent structures in turbulent pipe flow are investigated at relatively high Reynolds numbers and study their association in both total kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress. Experimental investigations have been performed in Cottbus Large Pipe test facility (CoLaPipe) for pipe flow over a wide range of Reynolds number 8 × 104 ≤ ReD ≤ 1 × 106, located at the Aerodynamics and Fluid Mechanics Department, Brandenburg University of Technology Cottbus- Senftenberg (BTU). The first part of the thesis focuses on determining the contribution of the coherent structures using one-dimensional spectral analysis and assessing the structures behaviour in the outer region of pipe flow using high spatial resolution Hot-wire measurement up to 30kHz. The results of the power and pre-multiplied spectrum of stream-wise velocity indicate that the wavelength value of very large scale motions (VLSMs) acquires 19R at a maximum Reynolds number range ReD=1 × 106 (Reτ =19000). On the other hand, large-scale motions have a wavelength value of 3R over different Reynolds number range. Regarding the identified wavelength values, it is observed that contribution to energy for structures greater than 3R carries 55% of total kinetic energy. In addition, temporal-spatial resolution using the High-speed PIV measurements has been performed in CoLaPipe to estimate the contribution magnitude of stream-wise/wall-normal velocity fluctuations to total kinetic energy and Reynolds shear stress in the logarithmic and outer layer.
