Book High Resolution Spin Resolved Photoemission Spectrometer and the Rashba Effect in Bismuth Thin Films

Download or read book High Resolution Spin Resolved Photoemission Spectrometer and the Rashba Effect in Bismuth Thin Films written by Akari Takayama and published by Springer. This book was released on 2014-09-20 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this thesis, the author has developed a high-resolution spin-resolved photoemission spectrometer that achieves the world-best energy resolution of 8 meV. The author has designed a new, highly efficient mini Mott detector that has a large electron acceptance angle and an atomically flat gold target to enhance the efficiency of detecting scattered electrons. The author measured the electron and spin structure of Bi thin film grown on a Si(111) surface to study the Rashba effect. Unlike the conventional Rashba splitting, an asymmetric in-plane spin polarization and a tremendous out-of-plane spin component were observed. Moreover, the author found that the spin polarization of Rashba surface states is reduced by decreasing the film thickness, which indicates the considerable interaction of Rashba spin-split states between the surface and Bi/Si interface.

Book Designing Topological Phase of Bismuth Halides and Controlling Rashba Effect in Films Studied by ARPES

Download or read book Designing Topological Phase of Bismuth Halides and Controlling Rashba Effect in Films Studied by ARPES written by Ryo Noguchi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-04-25 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents the observation and the control of spin-polarized electrons in Rashba thin films and topological insulators, including the first observations of a weak topological insulator (WTI) and a higher-order topological insulator (HOTI) in bismuth halides. It begins with a general review of electronic structures at the solid surface and mentions that an electron spin at a surface is polarized due to the Rashba effect or topological insulator states with strong spin-orbit coupling. Subsequently it describes the experimental techniques used to study these effects, that is, angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES). Further it moves its focus onto the experimental investigations, in which mainly two different systems—noble metal thin films with the Rashba effects and bismuth halides topological insulators—are used. The study of the first system discusses the role of wavefunctions in spin-splitting and demonstrates a scaling law for the Rashba effect in quantum well films for the first time. High-resolution spin-resolved ARPES plays a vital role in systematically trace the thickness-evolution of the effect. The study of the latter material is the first experimental demonstration of both a WTI and HOTI state in bismuth iodide and bismuth bromide, respectively. Importantly, nano-ARPES with high spatial resolution is used to confirm the topological surface states on the side surface of the crystal, which is the hallmark of WTIs. The description of the basic and recently-developed ARPES technique with spin-resolution or spatial-resolution, essential in investigating spin-polarized electrons at a crystal surface, makes the book a valuable source for researchers not only in surface physics or topological materials but also in spintronics and other condensed-matter physics.

Book Spectroscopy of Complex Oxide Interfaces

Download or read book Spectroscopy of Complex Oxide Interfaces written by Claudia Cancellieri and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-04-09 with total page 326 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the most recent and compelling experimental results for complex oxide interfaces. The results of this book were obtained with the cutting-edge photoemission technique at highest energy resolution. Due to their fascinating properties for new-generation electronic devices and the challenge of investigating buried regions, the book chiefly focuses on complex oxide interfaces. The crucial feature of exploring buried interfaces is the use of soft X-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) operating on the energy range of a few hundred eV to increase the photoelectron mean free path, enabling the photons to penetrate through the top layers – in contrast to conventional ultraviolet (UV)-ARPES techniques. The results presented here, achieved by different research groups around the world, are summarized in a clearly structured way and discussed in comparison with other photoemission spectroscopy techniques and other oxide materials. They are complemented and supported by the most recent theoretical calculations as well as results of complementary experimental techniques including electron transport and inelastic resonant X-ray scattering.

Book Novel Superconductivity

Download or read book Novel Superconductivity written by Stuart A. Wolf and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 1086 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Novel Mechanisms of Superconductivity Conference was initially conceived in the early part of 1986 as a small, 2-1/2 day workshop of 40-70 scientists, both theorists and experimentalists interested in exploring the possible evidence for exotic, non phononic superconductivity. Of course, the historic discoveries of high temperature oxide superconductors by Bednorz and Mftller and the subsequent enhancements by the Houston/Alabama groups made such a small conference impractical. The conference necessarily had to expand, 2-1/2 days became 4-1/2 days and superconductivity in the high Tc oxides became the largest single topic in the workshop. In fact, this conference became the first major conference on this topic and thus, these proceedings are also the first maj or publication. However, heavy fermion, organic and low carrier concentration superconductors remained a very important part of this workshop and articles by the leaders in these fields are included in these proceedings. Ultimately the workshop hosted rearly 400 scientists, students and media including representatives from the maj or research groups in the U.S., Europe, Japan and the Soviet Union.

Book Planewaves Pseudopotentials and the LAPW Method

Download or read book Planewaves Pseudopotentials and the LAPW Method written by David J. Singh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006-10-12 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first edition of this book, published in 1994, provided an exposition of the LAPW method and its relationship with other electronic structure approaches, especially Car-Parrinello based planewave methods. Since publication of that book, the LAPW method has been transformed from a specialized method used mostly by researchers running their own home made versions, to a popular, widely used method, where most users run standard codes to investigate ma terials of interest to them. This is an exciting development because it opens the door to widespread use of first principles calculations in diverse areas of condensed matter physics and materials science. The positive impact of this on scientific progress is already becoming clear. Also as a result of this trend, the great majority of researchers using the LAPW method are no longer directly in volved in the development of LAPW codes. Nonetheless, it remains important to understand how the LAPW method works, what its limitations are, and how its parameters determine the quahty and efficiency of calculations. The scientist with an understanding of how the method works has a clear advantage. This edition is an updated and expanded treatment of the LAPW method, including descriptions of key developments in the LAPW method since 1994, such as p 1/2 local orbitals, the APW-i-LO method, LDA+U calculations and non-collinear magnetism, as well as much of the material from the first edition.

Book Photoelectron Spectroscopy

Download or read book Photoelectron Spectroscopy written by Shigemasa Suga and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-09-07 with total page 389 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoelectron spectroscopy is now becoming more and more required to investigate electronic structures of various solid materials in the bulk, on surfaces as well as at buried interfaces. The energy resolution was much improved in the last decade down to 1 meV in the low photon energy region. Now this technique is available from a few eV up to 10 keV by use of lasers, electron cyclotron resonance lamps in addition to synchrotron radiation and X-ray tubes. High resolution angle resolved photoelectron spectroscopy (ARPES) is now widely applied to band mapping of materials. It attracts a wide attention from both fundamental science and material engineering. Studies of the dynamics of excited states are feasible by time of flight spectroscopy with fully utilizing the pulse structures of synchrotron radiation as well as lasers including the free electron lasers (FEL). Spin resolved studies also made dramatic progress by using higher efficiency spin detectors and two dimensional spin detectors. Polarization dependent measurements in the whole photon energy spectrum of the spectra provide useful information on the symmetry of orbitals. The book deals with the fundamental concepts and approaches for the application of this technique to materials studies. Complementary techniques such as inverse photoemission, photoelectron diffraction, photon spectroscopy including infrared and X-ray and scanning tunneling spectroscopy are presented. This book provides not only a wide scope of photoelectron spectroscopy of solids but also extends our understanding of electronic structures beyond photoelectron spectroscopy.
