Book The Multiwavelength Atlas of Galaxies

Download or read book The Multiwavelength Atlas of Galaxies written by Glen Mackie and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-01-06 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the radio signature of our own Milky Way was detected in 1931, galaxies have been observed from ultra-high energy gamma rays to long wavelength radio waves, providing fundamental insights into their formation, evolution and structural components. Unveiling the secrets of some of the best-observed galaxies, this atlas contains over 250 full-color images spanning the whole electromagnetic spectrum. The accompanying text explains why we see the component stars, gas and dust through different radiation processes, and describes the telescopes and instruments used. This atlas is a valuable reference resource on galaxies for students seeking an overview of multiwavelength observations and what they tell us, and researchers needing detailed summaries of individual galaxies. An accompanying website, hosted by the author, contains slide shows of the galaxies covered in the book. This is available at www.cambridge.org/9780521620628.

Book The Galactic Center IAU S303

Download or read book The Galactic Center IAU S303 written by Loránt Sjouwerman and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-06-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: IAU Symposium 303 highlights the latest Galactic Center research by scientists from around the world. Topics vary from theory through observations, from stars and stellar orbits through nearby black holes and explosive events, to the building blocks and transport of energy in galaxies similar to our own Milky Way. Highlights presented include: high-resolution, multi-wavelength large-scale surveys of molecular gas in the central molecular and dust zones of our Galaxy; studies of stellar populations and stellar orbits around the supermassive black hole Sgr A*; presentations of theoretical models to explain the dusty S-cluster object (DSO) G2, as well as the general accretion and jet formation in the vicinity of Sgr A*; and discussions of large-scale gamma-ray emission in the context of energetic activity and magnetic fields in the Galactic Center. The volume concludes by looking ahead to future observing opportunities across the electromagnetic spectrum at very high resolution.

Book A Statistical and Multi wavelength Study of Star Formation in Galaxies

Download or read book A Statistical and Multi wavelength Study of Star Formation in Galaxies written by Corentin Schreiber and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents a pioneering method for gleaning the maximum information from the deepest images of the far-infrared universe obtained with the Herschel satellite, reaching galaxies fainter by an order of magnitude than in previous studies. Using these high-quality measurements, the author first demonstrates that the vast majority of galaxy star formation did not take place in merger-driven starbursts over 90% of the history of the universe, which suggests that galaxy growth is instead dominated by a steady infall of matter. The author further demonstrates that massive galaxies suffer a gradual decline in their star formation activity, providing an alternative path for galaxies to stop star formation. One of the key unsolved questions in astrophysics is how galaxies acquired their mass in the course of cosmic time. In the standard theory, the merging of galaxies plays a major role in forming new stars. Then, old galaxies abruptly stop forming stars through an unknown process. Investigating this theory requires an unbiased measure of the star formation intensity of galaxies, which has been unavailable due to the dust obscuration of stellar light.

Book Knowledge Discovery in Big Data from Astronomy and Earth Observation

Download or read book Knowledge Discovery in Big Data from Astronomy and Earth Observation written by Petr Skoda and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2020-04-10 with total page 474 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Knowledge Discovery in Big Data from Astronomy and Earth Observation: Astrogeoinformatics bridges the gap between astronomy and geoscience in the context of applications, techniques and key principles of big data. Machine learning and parallel computing are increasingly becoming cross-disciplinary as the phenomena of Big Data is becoming common place. This book provides insight into the common workflows and data science tools used for big data in astronomy and geoscience. After establishing similarity in data gathering, pre-processing and handling, the data science aspects are illustrated in the context of both fields. Software, hardware and algorithms of big data are addressed. Finally, the book offers insight into the emerging science which combines data and expertise from both fields in studying the effect of cosmos on the earth and its inhabitants. - Addresses both astronomy and geosciences in parallel, from a big data perspective - Includes introductory information, key principles, applications and the latest techniques - Well-supported by computing and information science-oriented chapters to introduce the necessary knowledge in these fields
