Book Flexible Generation of Picosecond Laser Pulses in the Infrared and Green Spectral Range by Gain Switching of Semiconductor Lasers

Download or read book Flexible Generation of Picosecond Laser Pulses in the Infrared and Green Spectral Range by Gain Switching of Semiconductor Lasers written by Sina Riecke and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2011-03-15 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Picosecond laser pulses find diverse applications for example in material processing as well as in analysis and sensing. Fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy in particular requires pulses with variable repetition rate and moderate pulse energy. While suitable pulses in the red and blue spectral range can be provided by gain-switched laser diodes, the generation of green laser pulses requires a more elaborate setup based on second harmonic generation. The starting point is a gain-switched infrared distributed-feedback laser diode. The optimization of the laser design and the operating conditions allows to generate spectrally narrow picosecond pulses with a peak power above 1 W. Different gain media are compared for further amplification of these pulses, and options for the miniaturization of the master-oscillator power-amplifier system are explored. The resulting intense infrared pulses are then used for second harmonic generation of green picoseconds pulses. Their peak power of above 5 W exceeds all previous green pulse sources with variable repetition rate. In terms of pulse energy and background suppression, the reported green pulses are thus ideally suited for fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after the invention of the laser, a brand-new area of endeavour emerged after the discovery that powerful ultrashort (picosecond) light pulses could be extracted from some lasers. Chemists, physicists, and engineers quickly recognized that such pulses would allow direct temporal studies of extremely rapid phenomena requiring, however, development of revolutionary ultrafast optical and electronic devices. For basic research the development of picosecond pulses was highly important because experimentalists were now able to measure directly the motions of atoms and molecules in liquids and solids: by disrupting a material from equilibrium with an intense picosecond pulse and then recording the time of return to the equilibrium state by picosecond techniques. Studies of picosecond laser pulses-their generation and diagnostic tech niques-are still undergoing a fairly rapid expansion, but a critical review of the state of the art by experienced workers in the field may be a timely help to new experimentalists. We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.

Book Measuring the Electric Field of Picosecond to Nanosecond Pulses with High Spectral Resolution and High Temporal Resolution

Download or read book Measuring the Electric Field of Picosecond to Nanosecond Pulses with High Spectral Resolution and High Temporal Resolution written by Jacob Arthur Cohen and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We demonstrate four experimentally simple methods for measuring very complex ultrashort light pulses. Although each method is comprised of only a few optical elements, they permit the measurement of extremely complex pulses with time-bandwidth products greater than 65,000. First, we demonstrate an extremely simple frequency-resolved-optical gating (GRENOUILLE) device for measuring the intensity and phase of pulses up to ~20ps in length. In order to achieve the required high spectral resolution and large temporal range, it uses a few-cm-thick second harmonic-generation crystal in the shape of a pentagon. This has the additional advantage of reducing the device's total number of components to three. Secondly, we introduce a variation of spectral interferometry (SI) using a virtually imaged phased array and grating spectrometer for measuring long complex ultrashort pulses up to 80 ps in length. Next, we introduce a SI technique for measuring the complete intensity and phase of relatively long and very complex ultrashort pulses. It involves making multiple measurements using SI (in its SEA TADPOLE variation) at numerous delays, measuring many temporal pulselets within the pulse, and concatenating the resulting pulselets. Its spectral resolution is the inverse delay range--many times higher than that of the spectrometer used. The waveforms were measured with ~ fs temporal resolution over a temporal range of ~ns and had time-bandwidth products exceeding 65,000, which to our knowledge is the largest time-bandwidth product ever measured with ~fs temporal resolution. Finally, we demonstrate a single-shot measurement technique that temporally interleaves hundreds of measurements with ~fs temporal resolution. It is another variation of SI for measuring the complete intensity and phase of relatively long and complex ultrashort pulses in a single shot. It uses a grating to introduce a transverse time delay into a reference pulse which gates the unknown pulse by interfering it at the image plane of an imaging spectrometer. It provided ~125 fs temporal resolution and a temporal range of 70 ps using a low-resolution spectrometer.

Book An investigation on semiconductor lasers in a picosecond regime

Download or read book An investigation on semiconductor lasers in a picosecond regime written by and published by . This book was released on 1911 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Picosecond Phase Conjugation New Applications Devices and Materials

Download or read book Picosecond Phase Conjugation New Applications Devices and Materials written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 65 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this project we investigated four main areas: (1) Temporal shaping of picosecond laser pulses using beam coupling in a photorefractive crystal. We showed both theoretically and experimentally that one can add or subtract picosecond light pulses onto existing light pulses to create arbitrary temporal waveforms. (2) The physics of the photorefractive effect in barium titanate crystals. We showed that photovaltaic currents play an important role in the formation of photorefractive gratings in barium titanate. We also derived a theory to explain the curved beam paths observed in photorefractive phase conjugators. (3)Frequency doubling in infrared light in glass. We proved decisively that second harmonic generation in optically prepared glass is caused by a dc electric field imprisoned in the glass. We mapped the spatial profile of this dc field to a resolution of one micron. (4)Injecting diode laser arrays using phase conjugation. We demonstrated that injecting broad-area diode laser with light causes the laser array to emit a spatially and spectrally narrow output beam. We use a double phase conjugator to guide light from an injecting laser into the lasing regions of the laser array. jg.

Book Ultrashort Laser Pulses and Applications

Download or read book Ultrashort Laser Pulses and Applications written by Wolfgang Kaiser and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years ago, Stanley L. Shapiro edited the book entitled Ultrashort Light Pulses (Topics Appl. Phys., Vol. 18), which was written by eight experts in the field. Six years later, Charles V. Shank added a bibliography (1980-1983) in the second edition with approximately one thousand new references. During the past decade the field has grown so rapidly that a completely new book had to be written. In particular, the reduction of the time scale of light pulses into the femtosecond range has opened up new experimental possibilities never even foreseen in the preceding literature. The vast literature with countless ideas and applications makes it impossible for a single person to write a comprehensive review. Nine scientists, actively working in the field since its beginning, have decided to join forces to prepare a new book describing the present state of the art. Emphasis is placed on the generation and numerous applications of ultrashort laser pulses. This book covers a wide area of science: physics, engineering, chemistry, and biology. The various chapters and sections are prepared in each case such that the reader is given a brief introduction to the specific subject. Ample references for a more detailed study are given at the end of each chapter.
