Because of its high sensitivity, this technique opened up a new field: The pressure dependence of weak metallic susceptibilities. The technique employs a Faraday magnetometer, miniature pressure clamps, and a novel method for compensating the background magnetization of the clamps. Emphasis was placed on pressure-induced magnetic-nonmagnetic transitions in metals. These were documented for the first time by magnetic measurements on certain rare earth metals, their alloys and compounds, and itinerant ferromagnets. As a result of this work, a new class of nonmagnetic rare earth materials with nonintegral valence was recognized. (Author).

Book excerpt: Transition metal oxides have been the ideal platform for designing materials with exotic properties due to the complex interplay between spin, charge,and orbital degrees of freedom which can be fine-tuned by varying pressure, temperature, and external magnetic field to give rise to novel phases. Transition metal oxides are also a challenge from the theoretical point of view. The (semi)local density approximation for the exchange correlation functional that is often used in density functional calculations fails to adequately describe the many-body effects of 3dand 4f electrons thereby leading tounderestimated band gaps. Several techniques, such as hybrid functionals, dynamical mean field theory, and DFT+U, have been developed over the past few decades to account for the many-body effects of 3d and 4f electrons. The DFT+U method, which will be used extensively throughout this thesis, has proved to be very successful in modeling gap opening, structure optimization and predicting transport properties. Rare earth nickelates have attracted a lot of attention in recent years due to their complex phase diagram that arises from the competition between spin, charge, and orbital degrees of freedom. Of particular interest is the metal-insulator transition that occurs upon cooling for RNiO3 (R=rare earth, except for La) which was found to be accompanied by symmetry lowering, later theorized as the evidence for charge ordering. By using first principles calculations, we found that the charge difference between Ni ions in the "charge-ordered" phase is negligibly small, while various aspects such as core energy levels, spectral weight immediately above and below the Fermi level, and magnetic moments do differ. Using Wannier function analysis, the charge states of Ni ions in the lower symmetry structure are systematically studied and found to correlated to the number of Wannier charge centers at the Ni site. The same approach was applied to study the charge states of Ag[superscript]I and Ag[superscript]III in AgO. Another interesting aspect of transition metal oxides is their topological properties that are attracting much attention in recent years. The semi-Dirac point, first discovered by Pardo et al and later modeled by Banerjee et al, has linear dispersion along the diagonal and quadratic dispersion perpendicular to the diagonal. In this thesis, we revisit the tight-binding Hamiltonian proposed by Banerjee and extend it to include the effects of external magnetic fieldon the energy spectrum and topological properties. We also discuss the forms of effective model Hamiltonians that can generate non-zero Berry phase. First principles calculations have been successful in guiding the experimental search for high T[subscript]c superconductors, the most recent example being high T[subscript]c (203K) superconductor H3S under pressure (200GPa). The superconductivity of H3S was first predicted by Duan et al using DFT combined with structure optimization algorithms and validated soon after. Though elemental hydrogen was predicted to metallize under pressure in 1930, it was not realized until recently that hydrogen based compounds rather than pure hydrogen atoms are better candidates for high T[subscript]c superconductors. In this thesis, we carried out first principle calculations to study the unusual van Hove singularities located near the Fermi level that lead to a sharp peak, and analyzed the hybridization between sulfur and hydrogen states by constructing a tight-binding model.

In the second half of the twentieth century, the discipline of planetary sciences has witnessed three major episodes which have revolutionized its approach and content: (i) the plate-tectonic theory, (ii) human landing and discoveries in planetary astronomy and (iii) the extraordinary technical advancement in high P-T studies, which have been abetted by a vast improvement in computational methods. Using these new computational methods, such as first principles including ab initio models, calculations have been made for the electronic structure, bonding, thermal EOS, elasticity, melting, thermal conductivity and diffusivity. In this monograph, the boundaries of the definitions of a petrologist, geochemist, geophysicist or a mineralogist have been willfully eliminated to bring them all under the spectrum of "high-pressure geochemistry" when they deal with any material (quintessentially a chemical assemblage) - terrestrial or extraterrestrial - under the conditions of high-pressure and temperature. Thus, a petrologist using a spectrometer or any instrument for high-pressure studies of a rock or a mineral, or a geochemist using them for chemical synthesis and characterization, is better categorized as a "high-pressure geochemist" rather than any other kind of disciplinarian. The contents of this monograph bring together, under one cover, apparently disparate disciplines like solid-earth geophysics and geochemistry as well as material science and condensed-matter physics to present a thorough overview of high pressure geochemistry. Indeed, such interdisciplinary activities led to the discovery of new phenomena such as high P-T behaviour in metal oxides (e.g. Mott transition), novel transitions such as amorphization, changes in order-disorder in crystals and the anomalous properties of oxide melts.
