Book Fiber Lasers

Download or read book Fiber Lasers written by Liang Dong and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-09-19 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fiber laser, with its humble beginning in the late 1980s, has undergone tremendous development in the past decade or so, transforming itself from a research curiosity to a major force in modern manufacturing. Today, it is revolutionizing our economy by fundamentally changing the way we mark, machine, and process materials on an industrial scale. The recent development of high-power fiber lasers is also fundamentally shaping a wide range of other areas from physical sciences and medicine to geology and space exploration. In the past few years, the tactical deployment of direct energy weapons based on fiber lasers has become a reality. The development of fiber lasers is rooted in a number of technical areas including optical materials, optical waveguide design, nonlinear optics, optical fiber fabrication, and optical characterization, in addition to optical fiber components, and fiber laser design and architecture. No comprehensive in-depth coverage of such diverse topical areas has appeared in a single book. Many important developments have taken place in the past decade in both academia and industry. This book comprehensively covers the basics, technology and applications of fiber lasers including up-to-date developments in both academia and industry and is aimed to serve as both an introduction and research aid for graduate students, engineers, and scientists who are new to this field and also for veterans in the field

Book Pulsed Fiber Lasers with Multimode Interference Saturable Absorber

Download or read book Pulsed Fiber Lasers with Multimode Interference Saturable Absorber written by Arslan Anjum and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Modelocked mid-infrared (mid-IR) lasers are an essential tool for applications like spectroscopy, metrology and laser surgery. They provide narrow pulse width and high peak power, which also makes them an ideal source for parametric oscillators and supercontinuum generation. Development of fiber based mid-IR ultrafast lasers is limited by the availability of fiber components like optical isolators, couplers and saturable absorbers that are compatible with operation in the wavelength window of 2-12 um. This thesis investigates the design of a fiber based saturable absorber that is suitable for modelocking mid-IR fiber lasers. The saturable absorber is based on nonlinear multimode interference in a multimode fiber and it operates in reflection mode. The all-fiber design of the saturable absorber eliminates the need for free-space alignment. Furthermore, the reflection mode operation makes it suitable for linear cavity laser design, which removes the need for optical isolators and additional fiber couplers. First, the proposed saturable absorber is constructed with a silica based graded index multimode fiber. This saturable absorber leads to generation of modelocked noise-like pulses in a thulium doped fiber laser. Afterwards, a mid-IR compatible version of the saturable absorber is built using an As-S-Se based step index multimode fiber. Using this device, stable mode-locked operation and resembling pulse operation are demonstrated at a wavelength of 1.9 um"--

Book excerpt: "All-fiber lasers in the near-IR region from 800 nm to 2500 nm have become a promising technology and been successfully applied in the fields of optical sensing, spectroscopy, communications, and medical surgery. Recognized as the most stable heavy metal fluoride glass, ZBLAN fiber is an excellent host for rare-earth ions to generate lasing emission in the near-IR region. In this thesis, we demonstrate the use of Tm3+:ZBLAN fiber to achieve near-IR lasing emission at 810 nm, 1480 nm, 1900 nm and 2300 nm in all-fiber configuration. Simultaneous multi-band or multi-wavelength lasing outputs are realized with different output manners including CW, Q-switched, and mode-locked operations.First, experimental studies of CW Tm3+:ZBLAN fiber lasers are provided. A dual-band CW Tm3+:ZBLAN fiber at 810 nm and 1487 nm using a single linear cavity pumped at 1064 nm, as well as a dual-band three-wavelength CW Tm3+:ZBLAN fiber laser at 1460 nm, 1503 nm and 1873 nm are presented. Then, a widely tunable dual-wavelength Tm3+:silica fiber laser at 1900 nm is introduced. A tuning range of 70 nm with alternate switching operation by ~5.4 nm separation is achieved. These multi-band or multi-wavelength laser sources will find important applications in the fields of LIDAR, multi-wavelength absorption spectroscopy, and fiber cavity ring-down spectroscopy.Next, graphene is employed as a saturable absorber for pulse generation in Tm3+:ZBLAN fiber laser. A passively synchronized Q-switched dual-band fiber ring laser at 1480 nm and 1840 nm with a synchronized repetition rate from 20 kHz to 40.5 kHz is shown. Then, a mode-locked dual-band fiber linear laser at 1480 nm and 1845 nm with synchronized or unsynchronized mode-locked pulses is demonstrated by controlling the cavity lengths. Such dual-band pulsed fiber laser sources will be important in the fields of spectroscopy, instrumentation, communications and nonlinear frequency conversion. Finally, bidirectional pumping scheme at 795 nm is adopted to stimulate two lasing transitions, 3H4→3H6 for 1900 nm and 3F4→3H5 for 2300 nm, simultaneously. A CW Tm3+:ZBLAN all-fiber laser with co-lasing emission at 1875 nm and 2320 nm, along with a passively Q-switched Tm3+:ZBLAN all-fiber laser at 1895 nm and 2315 nm using a graphene SA with a synchronized repetition rate from 10.8 kHz to 25.2 kHz are presented. Such fiber laser sources can add new capabilities in the newly exploited optical transmission window around 2000 nm or for sensing and gas concentration detection." --

Book Advanced High Power Near Infrared Fiber Lasers

Book excerpt: Experiments were conducted to study stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) in optical fibers with a goal of studying its applicability for phase conjugation of radiation from CW lasers, and of using SBS to demonstrate high power fiber lasers by coherent combination of beams from several fiber amplifiers. It was determined that usual plane-wave theory of SBS does not correctly predict the threshold when applied to SBS in single-mode step-index and multimode GRIN fibers. By properly accounting for the mode sizes and modal dispersion in the fibers, good agreement (within 15%) between experiments and theory was obtained. Good compensation of beam distortion was demonstrated via SBS in long multimode fibers (length of the order of 1 km), both with butt-coupling and focusing geometries. We have demonstrated the reduction of the SBS threshold, an increase in the SBS reflectivity and reduction in Stokes power fluctuations for seeded SBS in long multimode fibers. We have demonstrated distortion compensation via (beam cleanup) in the seeded SBS configuration.
