Book excerpt: Frequency upconversion of laser-generated photons by inverse Compton scattering for applications such as nuclear spectroscopy and gamma-gamma collider concepts on the future ILC would benefit from an increase of average source brightness. The primary obstacle to higher average brightness is the relatively small Thomson scattering cross section. It has been proposed that this limitation can be partially overcome by use of laser pulse recirculation. The traditional approach to laser recirculation entails resonant coupling of low-energy pulse train to a cavity through a partially reflective mirror. Here we present an alternative, passive approach that is akin to 'burst-mode' operation and does not require interferometric alignment accuracy. Injection of a short and energetic laser pulse is achieved by placing a thin frequency converter, such as a nonlinear optical crystal, into the cavity in the path of the incident laser pulse. This method leads to the increase of x-ray/gamma-ray energy proportional to the increase in photon energy in frequency conversion. Furthermore, frequency tunability can be achieved by utilizing parametric amplifier in place of the frequency converter.

The recirculation increased twenty-eight times the intensity of the light coming out of the laser system, demonstrating the capability of increasing the gamma-ray flux emitted by T-REX. The technical approach demonstrated could conceivably increase the average gamma-ray flux output by up to a hundred times.

Book excerpt: Picosecond laser pulses find diverse applications for example in material processing as well as in analysis and sensing. Fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy in particular requires pulses with variable repetition rate and moderate pulse energy. While suitable pulses in the red and blue spectral range can be provided by gain-switched laser diodes, the generation of green laser pulses requires a more elaborate setup based on second harmonic generation. The starting point is a gain-switched infrared distributed-feedback laser diode. The optimization of the laser design and the operating conditions allows to generate spectrally narrow picosecond pulses with a peak power above 1 W. Different gain media are compared for further amplification of these pulses, and options for the miniaturization of the master-oscillator power-amplifier system are explored. The resulting intense infrared pulses are then used for second harmonic generation of green picoseconds pulses. Their peak power of above 5 W exceeds all previous green pulse sources with variable repetition rate. In terms of pulse energy and background suppression, the reported green pulses are thus ideally suited for fluorescence lifetime spectroscopy

We have developed and implementing a novel technique for picosecond, Joule-class laser pulse recirculation inside a passive cavity. The aim of this project was to develop technology compatible with increasing the efficiency of Compton based light sources by more than an order of magnitude. In year 1 of the project, we achieved a greater than 40 times average power enhancement of the mJ-scale laser pulses inside a passive cavity with internal focus. In year 2, we demonstrated recirculation of lasers pulses with energies up to 191 mJ at 532 nm, at a repetition rate of 10 Hz, and a pulse duration of 20 ps. In this high energy regime, we achieved up to 14 times average power enhancement inside the cavity. This enhancement factor is compatible with the new X-band based mono-energetic gamma-ray machine, Velociraptor, being constructed at LLNL. The demonstrated cavity enhancement is primarily limited by the poor spatial beam quality of the high power laser beam. We expect a nearly diffraction limited laser beam to achieve 40 times or better cavity enhancement, as demonstrated in low energy experiments in FY-07. The two primary obstacles to higher average brightness and conversion efficiency of laser pulse energy to gamma-rays are the relatively small Compton scattering cross-section and the typically low repetition rates of Joule-class interaction lasers (10 Hz). Only a small fraction (10−1°) of the available laser photons is converted to gamma-rays, while the rest is discarded. To significantly reduce the average power requirements of the laser and increase the overall system efficiency, we can recirculate laser light for repeated interactions with electron bunches. Our pulse recirculation scheme is based on nonlinear frequency conversion, termed recirculation injection by nonlinear gating (RING), inside a passive cavity. The main objectives of the two year project were: (1) Validate the concept of RING pulse trapping and recirculation technique. Completed Sep. 07 (2) Develop cavity designs compatible with a laser-electron Compton light source. Completed January 08. (3) Demonstrate trapping and recirculation of laser pulses suitable for high brightness gamma-ray generation. Completed Aug. 08 Our project has established RING as a viable technology for enhancing Compton scattering based gamma-ray generation. With sufficient funding we can implement pulse recirculation on the next generation Mono-energetic Gamma-Ray machine under construction at LLNL.

We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.

Book excerpt: This thesis presents research on novel laboratory-scale synchrotron X-ray sources based on inverse Compton scattering and applications of their X-ray radiation using the Munich Compact Light Source (MuCLS) as an example. It provides an introduction to the theory of this laser-electron interaction, laser resonators and X-ray interactions with matter. On this basis, upgrades to the laser system including the development of a new laser optic, X-ray beam stabilisation and two techniques for fast X-ray energy switching of inverse Compton sources are presented. On the application side, the beamline, designed and developed for the inverse Compton X-ray source at the MuCLS, is described before various techniques and applications are demonstrated at this laboratory-scale synchrotron X-ray facility. Among them are K-edge subtraction imaging, X-ray phase contrast imaging and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. Additionally, a new X-ray microscopy technique, called full-field structured-illumination super-resolution X-ray transmission microscopy, is presented. Apart from research conducted at the MuCLS, this thesis contains an in-depth overview on the state of the art of the various types of inverse Compton X-ray sources that have been realised so far. Accordingly, this thesis may serve as a guide and reference work for researchers working with inverse Compton X-ray sources as well as future users of such devices.

More than .100 papers were concerned with the latest advances in the ex perimental and theoretical understanding of ultrafast phenomena. New dis coveries in femtosecond and picosecond pulse generation and new results in chemical dynamics, solid-state physics, and nonlinear optics were presented. The quality of the scientific reports, the enthusiasm of the participating scientists, as well as the magnificent surroundings of the Bavarian alps guaranteed a successful and pleasant conference.
