Book High Power Millimeter Wavelength Coherent Radiation Sources

Download or read book High Power Millimeter Wavelength Coherent Radiation Sources written by John E. Walsh and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A summary of the results of the Cerenkov Maser development is presented. During the course of this work, operation over the spectral range extending from just below 30 GHz to just above 300 GHz was demonstrated. Sources based upon high-power microwave-tube technology and sources driven by pulse-power generators were both used to drive Cerenkov Masers. In the former type, 10% efficiency from single-pass, untapered resonators were obtained, while in the latter, efficiency was in the 0.1-1% range. Extensive computer codes describing linear and nonlinear aspects of Cerenkov Master operation were also developed.

Book Coherent Tunable Thz FIR Radiation Sources

Download or read book Coherent Tunable Thz FIR Radiation Sources written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 23 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As described by the title the grant funds were used to support a project whose primary goal was the development of tunable coherent sources for the THz-FIR region of the spectrum. The THz or more generally the FIR extends from 0.3 x 10(exp 12) (0.3THz) to 30 x 10(exp 12) (30THz) or alternatively from a wavelength of 1 mm down to a wavelength of 10 gm. It is a range of the spectrum that has been a long standing challenge. Microwave technology which has been extraordinarily successful at wavelengths longer than 1 mm and classical and quantum optical techniques which are extremely effective in the visible, near and mid infrared regions of the spectrum encounter fundamental challenges when extended (respectively) to longer or shorter wavelengths. Continued interest in "opening up" and exploiting the FIR region of the spectrum is based on the scientific questions which in part demand an access to the THz-FIR spectral range. These extend from atmospheric and biophysics to plasma physics and radio astronomy. Important technological applications also exist. Among the examples would be radar modeling, characterization of the response of near millimeter wave (NMMW) systems and the potential for short range high resolution radar. The immediate scientific and engineering goals of the project supported by the equipment grant provide a source that is tunable, narrow band and provides sufficient power for spectroscopic investigations. In the longer term a compact conveniently packaged sources and potential and requirements needed to reach higher power operation are of interest. The grating couples the beam with the electromagnetic field provides distributed feedback which reacts back on the beam and in turn leads to bunching of the beam. The density bunches produce the coherent operation.

Book New High Power Coherent Radiation Sources

Download or read book New High Power Coherent Radiation Sources written by P. Sprangle and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 48 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, there has been considerable renewed interest in the development of novel devices for the production of high power coherent electromagnetic radiation. This interest has been motivated largely by the realization that, with existing technology, certain processes utilizing relativistic electron beams can produce coherent electromagnetic radiation at power levels far in excess of those achieved by conventional electron devices. This paper will review the current status of this rapidly developing field, with emphasis on two generic devices. The major thrust in the recent development of electron beam driven radiation sources has been directed towards achieving shorter wavelengths, greater power and higher efficiencies. Shortly after the development of such successful sources as the magnetron, kylstron and various traveling wave devices, it became clear that, in their original form, they were limited in their ability to produce high levels of radiation efficiently at short wavelengths. To circumvent the inherent limitations of these conventional coherent radiation sources, many new concepts and mechanisms, as well as variations on conventional concepts, were proposed. This paper is concerned primarily with two devices which are, relatively speaking, newcomers to the list of coherent classical radiation sources. They are the free electron laser and the cyclotron resonance maser (CRM); one well known type of CRM is the gyrotron.

Download or read book Infrared and Millimeter Waves V13 written by Kenneth J. Button and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1985-11-28 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Infrared and Millimeter Waves, Volume 13: Millimeter Components and Techniques, Part IV compiles the work of several authors while focusing on certain aspects of infrared and millimeter waves, such as sources of radiation, instrumentation, and millimeter systems. This volume covers millimeter components and techniques. This text first covers the use of powerful gyrotrons for thermonuclear research, and then discusses high-power coherent radiation sources. Kinetic theory of harmonic gyrotron oscillator with slotted resonant structure is the focus of Chapter 3, while integrated fin-line components for communication, radar, and radiometer applications is the subject of Chapter 4. The fifth chapter discusses propagation and mode coupling in corrugated and smooth-wall circular waveguides. Chapter 6 discusses far-infrared properties of inhomogeneous materials, and the last chapter covers solid-state spectroscopy with far-infrared continuous-wave lasers. This book will be of great use to researchers or professionals whose work involves infrared and millimeter waves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energetic electromagnetic radiation finds frequent uses in science (e. g. , for expe riments in nuclear and elementary - particle physics), in technology (for materials testing), and in medicine (for medical X-rays). The most common method of genera ting such radiation is via the process of "bremsstrahlung" (a German term coined by A. Sommerfeld, meaning "braking radiation") in which a beam of electrons is direc ted into matter (e. g. , a metal target), losing energy during its collisions with the atoms and releasing this energy in the form of emitted radiation. The character of such radiation may be drastically changed by the use of a tar get with periodic structure (most commonly, a crystal target). The coherent waves emitted from individual crystal atoms interfere with each other, monochromatizing and polarizing the radiation and often increasing its intensity manifold, thereby creating a powerful radiation source of high quality for purposes of scientific and technical applications. This is true both for the well - established "coherent bremsstrahlung" process in which the interfering radiation is emitted while the electrons cross a succession of crystal planes, as well as for the more recently discovered process of "channeling radiation" (generating radiation of even higher intensity, but lower energy) in which the radiation is emitted while the electrons propagate along a crystal plane, or a crystal axis, in an oscillatory fashion.

This book was released on 2011-09-26 with total page 616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerical Simulations of Physical and Engineering Process is an edited book divided into two parts. Part I devoted to Physical Processes contains 14 chapters, whereas Part II titled Engineering Processes has 13 contributions. The book handles the recent research devoted to numerical simulations of physical and engineering systems. It can be treated as a bridge linking various numerical approaches of two closely inter-related branches of science, i.e. physics and engineering. Since the numerical simulations play a key role in both theoretical and application oriented research, professional reference books are highly needed by pure research scientists, applied mathematicians, engineers as well post-graduate students. In other words, it is expected that the book will serve as an effective tool in training the mentioned groups of researchers and beyond.

Book Physical Foundations of the Millimeter and Submillimeter Waves Technique V 2

Download or read book Physical Foundations of the Millimeter and Submillimeter Waves Technique V 2 written by V. P. Ščestopalov and published by VSP. This book was released on 1997-08 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The developments in physics, biology and astronomy, as well as radar and communication technology, remote sensing and spectroscopy have led to a sharp increase in the investigations of electromagnetic millimeter and submillimeter waves with the lengths 10--1 and 1--0.1 mm. These volumes reflect the results of extensive research in this field and attempt to destroy stereotypes established during the long years of large-scale modeling in the millimeter and submillimeter wavelength ranges and to develop new concepts. The first volume (Open Structures) deals with the results of theoretical and experimental studies of open electrodynamic structures (open waveguides, open resonators, diffractional gratings) allowing the determination of the characteristics of various devices used in millimeter and submillimeter technology. The second volume (Sources. Element Base. Radio Systems: Novel Scientific Trends) presents the problems of creating independent units and radiosystems of the millimeter and submillimeter wavelength ranges and the justification of their physical operating principles. This includes the mechanism of generating volume waves by electron flows moving close to a grating, excitation of fields in open resonators and waveguides with inclusion, and other phenomena.
