Depending on software requirements, DSP may be implemented as dedicated hardware or as software programmable devices, and architectures for implementations of basic operations and basic functions are relevant for both implementation types. The mapping of signal processing algorithms onto specific array processors is covered, as are special applications digital filters and linear transforms. The architectures of programmable DSPs are integral to the book, and architectural measures to increase signal processing performance are explained. Both basic architectures of standard processors, and more specialist means such as SIMD, VLIW, and superscalar architectures are included. Significant developments in technology since the previous edition will receive particular focus: these include semiconductor technologies enabling the implementation of several programmable cores on one chip; multiprocessors with homogenous and heterogeneous structures; and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) allowing rapid prototyping. A concluding chapter looks at alternative DSP design styles (dedicated digital design, implementations using commercial DSP processors, application specific programmable processors, FPGA implementations) driven by application demands and implementation constraints. Book excerpt: "In the field of high performance digital signal processing, DSPs and FPGAs provide the most flexibility. Due to the extensive customization available on FPGAs, DSP algorithm implementation on an FPGA exhibits an increased development time over programming a processor. Because of this, traditional DSPs typically yield a faster time to market than an FPGA design. However, it is often desirable to have the ASIC-like performance that is attainable through the additional customization and parallel computation available through an FPGA. This can be achieved through the class of processors known as hyper-programmable DSPs. A hyper-programmable DSP is a DSP in which multiple aspects of the architecture are programmable. This thesis contributes such a DSP, targeted for high-performance and realized in hardware using an FPGA. The design consists of both a scalar datapath and a vector datapath capable of parallel operations, both of which are extensively customizable. To aid in the design of the datapaths, graphical tools are introduced as an efficient way to modify the design. A tool was also created to supply a graphical interface to help write instructions for the vector datapath. Additionally, an adaptive assembler was created to convert assembly programs to machine code for any datapath design. The resulting design was synthesized for a Cyclone III FPGA. The synthesis resulted in a design capable of running at 135MHz with 61% of the logic used by processing elements. Benchmarks were run on the design to evaluate its performance. The benchmarks showed similar performance between the proposed design and commercial DSPs for the simple benchmarks but significant improvement for the more complex ones."--Abstract.

While other approaches have always been intriguing, up until now synchro nous operation using a common clock has been the dominant design philo sophy. However, we have reached the point, with advances in technology, where other options should be given serious consideration. This is because the clock periods are getting much smaller in relation to the interconnect propagation delays, even within a single chip and certainly at the board and backplane level. To a large extent, this problem can be overcome with care ful clock distribution in synchronous design, and tools for computer-aided design of clock distribution. However, this places global constraints on the design, making it necessary, for example, to redesign the clock distribution each time any part of the system is changed. In this book, some alternative approaches to synchronization in digital sys tem design are described and developed. We owe these techniques to a long history of effort in both digital system design and in digital communica tions, the latter field being relevant because large propagation delays have always been a dominant consideration in design. While synchronous design is discussed and contrasted to the other techniques in Chapter 6, the dom inant theme of this book is alternative approaches.
