Book Grout Formulations for Nuclear Waste Isolation

Download or read book Grout Formulations for Nuclear Waste Isolation written by Alan D. Buck and published by . This book was released on 1982 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some of the considerations involved in the development of hydraulic cement-based grout mixtures intended for use in the isolation of nuclear waste stored underground are longevity, impermeability, uniformity, ease of placement, and relevance to previously used systems. Work done at the Structures Laboratory of the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station on this subject has indicated that apparently adequate systems can be based on well known ingredients. Information on field testing and long-term testing of these grouts has confirmed this indication. The following conclusions are indicated: (a) Selection of control parameters such as flow time, time of setting, compressive strength, and permeability for a candidate grout mixture should be criteria used in the formulation of a grout mixture. (b) Once quantitative levels of such parameters have been established, the hydraulic cement-based grout system has adequate latitude in its formulation to accommodate these needs. (c) While longevity in nonaggressive environments and compatibility with host rocks is known in general for such systems, data for specific mixtures under specific conditions must be developed. A Standard Practice for Selecting Mixture Proportions for Hydraulic Cement-Based Materials Systems for Repository Sealing is presented as an Appendix. (Author).

Book Development Programs in the United States of America for the Application of Cement based Grouts in Radioactive Waste Management

Download or read book Development Programs in the United States of America for the Application of Cement based Grouts in Radioactive Waste Management written by and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper briefly reviews seven cement-based waste form development programs at six of the US Department of Energy (DOE) sites. These sites have developed a variety of processes that range from producing 25 mm (1 in.) diameter pellets in a glove box to producing 240 m (800 ft.) diameter grout sheets within the bedding planes of a deep shale formation. These successful applications of cement-based waste forms to the many radioactive waste streams from nuclear facilities bear witness to the flexibility and reliability of this class of materials. This paper also discusses the major issues regarding the application of cement-based waste forms to radioactive waste management problems. These issues are (1) leachability, (2) radiation stability, (3) thermal stability, (4) phase complexity of the matrix, and (5) effects of the waste stream composition. A cursory review of current research in each of these areas is given This paper also discusses future trends in cement-based waste form development and applications. 31 references, 11 figures.

Book Use of Services for Family Planning and Infertility United States 1982

Download or read book Use of Services for Family Planning and Infertility United States 1982 written by Gerry E. Hendershot and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 982 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1982 statistics on the use of family planning and infertility services presented in this report are preliminary results from Cycle III of the National Survey of Family Growth (NSFG), conducted by the National Center for Health Statistics. Data were collected through personal interviews with a multistage area probability sample of 7969 women aged 15-44. A detailed series of questions was asked to obtain relatively complete estimates of the extent and type of family planning services received. Statistics on family planning services are limited to women who were able to conceive 3 years before the interview date. Overall, 79% of currently mrried nonsterile women reported using some type of family planning service during the previous 3 years. There were no statistically significant differences between white (79%), black (75%) or Hispanic (77%) wives, or between the 2 income groups. The 1982 survey questions were more comprehensive than those of earlier cycles of the survey. The annual rate of visits for family planning services in 1982 was 1077 visits /1000 women. Teenagers had the highest annual visit rate (1581/1000) of any age group for all sources of family planning services combined. Visit rates declined sharply with age from 1447 at ages 15-24 to 479 at ages 35-44. Similar declines with age also were found in the visit rates for white and black women separately. Nevertheless, the annual visit rate for black women (1334/1000) was significantly higher than that for white women (1033). The highest overall visit rate was for black women 15-19 years of age (1867/1000). Nearly 2/3 of all family planning visits were to private medical sources. Teenagers of all races had higher family planning service visit rates to clinics than to private medical sources, as did black women age 15-24. White women age 20 and older had higher visit rates to private medical services than to clinics. Never married women had higher visit rates to clinics than currently or formerly married women. Data were also collected in 1982 on use of medical services for infertility by women who had difficulty in conceiving or carrying a pregnancy to term. About 1 million ever married women had 1 or more infertility visits in the 12 months before the interview. During the 3 years before interview, about 1.9 million women had infertility visits. For all ever married women, as well as for white and black women separately, infertility services were more likely to be secured from private medical sources than from clinics. The survey design, reliability of the estimates and the terms used are explained in the technical notes.

Book Natural Analogs in Support of the Canadian Concept for Nuclear Fuel Waste Disposal

Download or read book Natural Analogs in Support of the Canadian Concept for Nuclear Fuel Waste Disposal written by Jan J. Cramer and published by Pinawa, Man. : Whiteshell Laboratories. This book was released on 1994 with total page 118 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Data used for the assessment modelling of the Canadian concept for disposal of nuclear fuel waste is mainly based on observations from short-term laboratory and field experiments, although it must apply to periods of 10,000 to one million years. Natural analogs can provide useful data and a qualitative illustration of the interaction of processes and materials in complex natural systems. This report reviews the available natural analog information used in support of the Canadian concept, with particular emphasis on the disposal of used CANDU fuel. The report gives a definition of natural analogs and an overview of the various types of analogs and analog studies; describes the main components of the disposal system, including the vault, the geosphere, and the biosphere, and gives specific examples for each; and describes several comprehensive natural systems that contain a number of features and processes similar to the disposal concept and that are under study by other countries as part of their waste disposal management programs.
