There was an offer of employment while going to college, and for someone with little money and no desire to attend college locally, the idea had great appeal, even if it was thousands of miles away. He left all he had known in the East to find his adventure in the West; to attend Montana State University (now the University of Montana) in Missoula; and to work four summers for the Forest Servicethree as a smokejumper. He shared his exploits with his mother in frequent and detailed letters that she saved. An aspiring author herself, she encouraged him to write about parachuting to forest fires. Those letters are the basis for this memoirHigh-mountain Two-manner. His writing style invites you to go with him as he trains, works in the woods, and fights forest fires. He also shares with you the joys of working in the back-country and savoring the beauty of wild places. Some of it could be rationalized as necessary during basic training, but it was clearly beyond the pale when the bullying leadership continued to persist. He realized a strategy to stave off depression was needed. With a few like-minded friends a deliberate effort was made to find humor in daily living. Originally, for the most part, religious celebrations, they became, even in the later Republic, the best means of purchasing popular favour, and, under the Empire, of keeping the populace contented. Augustus, the tale runs, once reproached Pylades the Pantomime for his jealousy of a rival, and Pylades replied: 'It is to your advantage, Caesar, that the people concerns itself about us'. But these spectacles effected more even than the diversion of popular interest; their magnificence was a gauge of the popularity of the sovereign. The emperors, like Louis XIV, knew how admiration aids absolute autocracy; like Napoleon, that the imagination of the people must be excited: splendid festivals were one of their most indispensable and most constant devices. Even Caligula, according to Josephus, was honoured and beloved by the folly of the populace; the women and the youth did not desire his death; distributions of meat, the games and the gladiatorial combats had won their hearts, for such were the delights of the mob: the lavishing of these gifts was nominally due to consideration for the populace, though the gladiatorial combats were only intended to sate the monarch's lust of blood.
