Book Ritual Communication

Download or read book Ritual Communication written by Gunter Senft and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-05-15 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ritual Communication examines how people create and express meaning through verbal and non-verbal ritual. Ritual communication extends beyond collective religious expression. It is an intrinsic part of everyday interactions, ceremonies, theatrical performances, shamanic chants, political demonstrations and rites of passage. Despite being largely formulaic and repetitive, ritual communication is a highly participative and self-oriented process. The ritual is shaped by time, space and the individual body as well as by language ideologies, local aesthetics, contexts of use, and relations among participants. Ritual Communication draws on a wide range of contemporary cultures - from Africa, America, Asia, and the Pacific - to present a rich and diverse study for students and scholars of anthropology, sociology and sociolinguistics.

It is an appreciation to the researchers and scholars who have presented their papers at the International Conference on Local Knowledge organised by the Local Knowledge Secretariat. The theme of this book, Facilitating Transfer of Local Knowledge brings local wisdom as part of an effort to convey the local knowledge to the society particularly to the young generations. In addition, the book aims to provide knowledge and experience in preserving and conserving local knowledge to the societies. Local wisdom in society is very important in maintaining culture, religion and race. Undoubtedly due to the rapid development, modernism has greatly influenced the young generation to forget about the culture that our ancestors had inherited earlier. It is hoped that this book will act as platform to encourage the societies to preserve and conserve the local knowledge as to be further inherited from one generation to another generation. Besides, this book will give readers the opportunity to get some way or help to restore the practices of past societies in preserving and conserving knowledge, artistry, and the teachings of the previous generation for the sake of sustainability of the future generation.

Book Traditional Malay Monarchy

Download or read book Traditional Malay Monarchy written by Haji Awg Asbol bin Haji Mail and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This remarkable book brings to an English-speaking audience detailed scholarship originally conceived and written in the Malay language and with a Malay perspective. It examines the nature of monarchy in the Malay world, which includes present-day Malaysia and Indonesia, before and during the onset of Western colonialism when the Malay world was ruled by a large number of separate Muslim sultanates. It highlights that monarchs were the highest authority in the social, political, legal and economic system, rather than the government of a clearly defined territory; the notion of Dewaraja (god-king) and what a model monarch’s attributes should be; and how the monarch’s role related to Islamic principles, including the Islamic ideal of the Caliph of God meting out fair judgement and punishment. Two prominent and pivotal concepts of traditional Malay society, that of daulat (sovereignty) and derhaka (disloyalty) are here analysed and evaluated against the background of the period of absolute monarchy. Moreover, this volume also discusses the parts played by leading ministers and viziers, who often exercised enormous power, explores the role of monarchs in managing and regulating economic activity, and outlines differences between the different sultanates.
