Book High Luminosity mu sup mu sup minus Collider Report of a Feasibility Study

Download or read book High Luminosity mu sup mu sup minus Collider Report of a Feasibility Study written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parameters are given of 4 TeV and 0.5 TeV (c-of-m) high luminosity[mu][sup+][mu][sup -] colliders, and of a 0.5 TeV lower luminosity demonstration machine. We discuss the various systems in such muon colliders, starting from the proton accelerator needed to generate the muons and proceeding through muon cooling, acceleration and storage in a collider ring. Detector background, polarization, and nonstandard operating conditions are analyzed. Muon Colliders have unique technical and physics advantages and disadvantages when compared with both hadron and electron machines. They should thus be regarded as complementary. We briefly mention the luminosity requirements of hadrons and lepton machines and their high-energy-physics advantages and disadvantages in reference to their effective center of mass energy. Finally, we present an R & D plan to determine whether such machines are practical.

Download or read book Progress on the Design of a High Luminosity mu sup mu sup minus Collider written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Parameters are presented for a 2+ 2 TeV muon collider with a luminosity of L= 10[sup 35] cm[sup[minus]2] s[sup[minus]1]. The design is not optimized for performance, neither for cost; however, it does suffice to allow one to make a credible case that a muon collider is a serious possibility for particle physics, that could open up the realm of physics above the 1 TeV scale, allowing, for example, copious production of supersymmetric particles or a detailed study of the strongly-interacting scenario of electroweak symmetry breaking.

Download or read book A High energy High luminosity mu sup minus mu sup minus Collider written by and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a candidate design for a high-energy high luminosity [mu][sup +]-[mu] collider, with E[sub cm] = 4 TeV, L = 10[sup 34] cm[sup [minus]2]S[sup [minus]1], using only existing technology. The design uses a rapid-cycling medium-energy proton synchrotron, which produces proton beam pulses which are focused onto two [pi]- producing targets, with two [pi]-decay transport lines producing [mu][sup +][prime]s and [mu][sup [minus]][prime]. The [mu][prime]s are collected, rf-rotated, cooled and compressed into a recirculating linac for acceleration, and then transferred into a storage ring collider. The keys to high luminosity are maximal [mu] collection and cooling; innovations with these goals are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past two years, considerable progress has been made in development of the[mu][sup+][mu][sup[minus]] collider concept. This collider concept could permit exploration of elementary particle physics at energy frontiers beyond the reach of currently existing and proposed electron and hadron colliders. As a benchmark prototype, we present a candidate design for a high-energy high-luminosity[mu][sup+][mu][sup[minus]] collider, with E[sub cm]= 4 TeV, L= 3[times] 10[sup 34] cm[sup[minus]2]s[sup[minus]1], based on existing technical capabilities. The design uses a rapid-cycling medium-energy proton synchrotron, producing proton beam pulses which are focused onto two[pi]-producing targets, with two[pi]-decay transport lines producing[mu][sup+]'s and[mu][sup[minus]]'s. the[mu]'s are collected, rf-rotated, cooled and compressed into a recirculating linac for acceleration, and then transferred into a storage ring collider. The keys to high luminosity are maximal[mu] collection and cooling, and innovations with these goals are presented. Possible variations and improvements are discussed. Recent progress in collider concept development is summarized, and future plans for collider development are discussed.

Book Radiation Issues of A mu sup mu sup minus Collider

Download or read book Radiation Issues of A mu sup mu sup minus Collider written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Radiation issues of high-luminosity 2 x 2 TeV and 250 x 250 GeV[mu][sup+][mu][sup -] colliders are considered. A series of dedicated simulations have been performed with the MARS code to understand formation of radiation fields in the complex and to assure that there are ways to meet the stringent regulation requirements. Considered in detail are the main collider arcs, the interaction region and absorption of spent muon beam. Prompt and residual radiation is analyzed. It is shown that for both operational and accidental beam loss radiation problems appear quite solvable.

Book Characteristics of a High Energy mu Sup mu Sup Collider Based on Electro Production of Muons

Download or read book Characteristics of a High Energy mu Sup mu Sup Collider Based on Electro Production of Muons written by and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We analyze the design of an high energy??− collider based on electro-production of muons. We derive an expression for the luminosity in terms of analytic formulae for the electron-to-muon conversion efficiency and the electron beam power on the production target On the basis of studies of self-consistent sets of collider parameters under 'realistic' ('optimistic') assumptions about available technology with beam cooling, we find the luminosity limited to 1027 m−2s−1 (1028 m−2s−1). We also identify major technological innovations that will be required before?+?− colliders can offer sufficient luminosity (103° cm−2s−1) for high energy physics research.

Book From A nu Factory To mu Super Mu Super minus Colliders

Download or read book From A nu Factory To mu Super Mu Super minus Colliders written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An important feature of a[mu]-storage ring[nu]-source is that it can be extended to the possibility of a future high-energy muon collider. The neutrino source provides a useful physics device that initiates key technologies required for future[mu][sup+]-[mu][sup[minus]] Colliders, but with much less demanding parameter requirements. These technologies include high-intensity[mu]-production, [mu]-capture, [mu]-cooling, [mu]-acceleration and multiturn[mu] storage rings.[mu][sup+]-[mu][sup[minus]] colliders require a similar number of muons, but they require that the muons be cooled to a much smaller phase space and formed into a small number of bunches, and both positive and negative bunches must be simultaneously captured. These differences are discussed, and the extension of the[nu]-source to[mu][sup+]-[mu][sup[minus]] collider specifications is described.

Book Acceleration to Collisions for The mu sup mu sup minus Collider

Download or read book Acceleration to Collisions for The mu sup mu sup minus Collider written by and published by . This book was released on 2001 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The authors discuss the problem of transforming muon beam bunches from a low-energy cooled state (E[sub[mu]][approximately] 1 GeV) to short, high-energy bunches matched to high-energy collision conditions (E[sub[mu]][approximately] 2 TeV). In this process the beam energy must increase by[approximately] three orders of magnitude, while the bunch length must be reduced by[approximately] two orders of magnitude (to[approximately] 3mm), while beam emittance dilution and beam losses, particularly through decay, must be minimized. From general considerations, they discuss possible acceleration scenarios including rapid-cycling synchrotron and recirculating linac options. The presently favored choice is a multi-stage recirculating linac system, which is discussed, and initial simulations of possible scenarios are presented. Future directions for development are discussed.
