Book High Level Glacial Outwash in the Driftless Area of Northwestern Illinois Classic Reprint

Download or read book High Level Glacial Outwash in the Driftless Area of Northwestern Illinois Classic Reprint written by Harold B. Willman and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-08 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High-Level Glacial Outwash in the Driftless Area of Northwestern Illinois Figure 1 The Driftless Area in Illinois and the localities described in this report. River supports the interpretation that the deep dissection of the valley occurred after Nebraskan glaciation and before the maximum of the Kansan glaciation. The mature topography of the Driftless Area, therefore, developed during the early Pleistocene and is not representative of the late Tertiary surface. Previously unpublished clay mineral analyses by H. D. Glass and heavy mineral analyses by Alan M. Jacobs, both of the Illinois State Geological Survey, are reported. Download or read book Glacigenic Sediments written by K. Brodzikowski and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1990-12-11 with total page 689 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book aims primarily at providing those involved in fundamental or applied research in the fields of geology, geomorphology and hydrology with a systematic overview of glacigenic sediments. A generally applicable terminology is proposed which should facilitate communication between scientists from several fields. Also it should form a bridge between western and eastern "schools" dealing with Quaternary geology. Because the book is mainly devoted to depositional processes and the resulting deposits, the approach and the terminology followed in this book are obviously founded strongly on sedimentology, the geological discipline that deals specifically with these phenomena. The book will be helpful in describing the sediments involved, interpreting their genesis, establishing their extent and their mutual relationships, and thus in the reconstruction of the palaeogeographic development. The large list of references reflects the author's extensive search of the literature.

Book excerpt: An updated treatment of management and geomorphology of large rivers around the world The newly revised Second Edition of Large Rivers: Geomorphology and Management delivers a thoroughly updated exploration of the form and function of major rivers. The book brings together a set of papers on the large rivers of the world, offering readers an insightful examination of a demanding subject. The new Second Edition of the book includes fully updated and revised chapters, as well as two entirely new chapters on the Ayeyarwady and the Arctic rivers. This fascinating volume describes the environmental requirements for creating and maintaining a major river system, case studies on over a dozen large rivers from different continents in a variety of physical environments, and the measurement and management of large rivers. Unmatched in scope, Large Rivers sheds light on a subject lacking in comprehensive study. Readers will benefit from the inclusion of: A thorough introduction to the geology of large river systems, hydrology and discharge, transcontinental moving and storage of sediment, and the greatest floods and largest rivers An exploration of the classification, architecture, and evolution of large-river deltas Discussions of sedimentology and stratigraphy of large river deposits, including their recognition in the ancient record and the distinction from incised valley fills An examination of the effects of tectonism, climate change, and sea-level change on the form and behavior of the modern Amazon river and its floodplain Measurement and management of large rivers The effect of climatic change on large rivers Perfect for postgraduate students and researchers in fluvial geomorphology, hydrology, sedimentary geology, and river management, Large Rivers: Geomorphology and Management will also earn a place in the libraries of engineers and environmental consultants in the private and public sectors working on major rivers around the world.

Book Stream Channel Stability

Download or read book Stream Channel Stability written by E. H. Grissinger and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This process-oriented study was organized to investigate three complementary aspects of channel stability including: (a) the nature of channel failure processes; (b) the influences of valley-fill depositional units on these processes; and (c) the properties and distributions of the valley-fill units. The study included the near-surface geologic investigation, investigation of the late-Quaternary valley-fill deposits, and channel morphometric investigations. The properties and distributions of the valley-fill units directly and indirectly influence the nature of channel failure processes. Although gravity-induced failure is the most frequent form of present-day bank instability, the type of gravity failure is dependent upon the properties of the valley-fill units. Both depositional and weathering properties influence the type of failure. The valley-fill units indirectly influence bank stability through their control of groundwater movement and the development of unusually large seepage forces at point-locations along the channels. Bed instability has primarily resulted from upstream migration of knickpoints and the rate of knickpoint migration has been affected by (valley-fill) unit controls. Present drainage systems in the study area are immature; channel morphometry has not adjusted at this time to the new flow regime resultant from cultural and natural changes.
