A generic design for water-cooled heat absorbers is described for use with ALS photon shutters, beam defining apertures, and heat absorbing masks. Also, results of in- situ measurements of thermal distortion of a water-cooled mirror in a synchrotron radiation beam line are compared with calculated performance estimates. 17 refs., 2 figs.

Book excerpt: In this paper, a short description of the synchrotron radiation x-ray sources and the associated power loads is given, followed by a brief description of typical synchrotron components and their heat load. It is emphasized that the design goals for most of these components is to limit (a) temperature, (b) stresses, or (c) strains in the system. Each design calls for a different geometry, material selection, and cooling scheme. Cooling schemes that have been utilized so far are primarily single phase and include simple macrochannel cooling, microchannel cooling, contact cooling, pin-post cooling, porous-flow cooling, jet cooling, etc. Water, liquid metals, and various cryogenic coolants have been used. Because the trend in x-ray beam development is towards brighter (i.e., more powerful) beams and assuming that no radical changes in the design of x-ray generating machines occurs in the next few years, it is fair to state that the utilization of various effective cooling schemes and, in particular, two-phase flow (e.g., subcooled boiling) warrants further investigation. This, however, requires a thorough examination of stability and reliability of two-phase flows for high-heat-flux components operating in ultrahigh vacuum with stringent reliability requirements.

Although certain established techniques for the cooling of high heat flux components can be directly applied to this problem, the thermal management of high heat load x-ray optical components has several unusual aspects that may ultimately lead to unique solutions. This manuscript attempts to summarize the various approaches currently being applied to this undertaking and to point out the areas of research that require further development.

Book excerpt: The research objective for this sector of the Advanced Photon Source (APS) is the development of sources and applications of polarized x-rays covering the energy range from 0.5 to 50 keV. Both linearly and circularly polarized x-rays have been very successfully applied to the study of magnetic properties of materials. However, the applications have been limited due primarily to the lack of energy-tunable, high-brilliance x-ray beams with adjustable polarization properties. It is the authors' intention that this sector will to some extent ameliorate that situation. They are confident that optics can be fabricated to simultaneously provide a high-quality beam with adjustable polarization in the energy range above 5 keV using the standard undulator A as a source. That is not the case below 5 keV, and hence they are planning to develop and install a helical undulator that can generate beams of variable (linear or circular) polarization in this lower energy range. Magnetic circular dichroism, resonant and non-resonant magnetic x-ray scattering, and other polarization-dependent phenomena will be investigated using hard x-rays. Techniques similar to those described for the hard x-rays plus spatially resolved, spin-polarized photoemission studies will be developed and used with the intermediate energy x-rays. They have incorporated some features not directly related to polarization studies, which were not available elsewhere on SRI-CAT beamlines. One of those features is a large vacuum tank immediately downstream of the ratchet wall into which high heat load beamline components can be installed and tested. A second feature is a mirror capable of focusing the white beam for high heat flux optical-component development and other uses. The insertion-device development, polarization programs, and beamline component testing all fall well within the existing scope of the SRI CAT programs.

Book excerpt: The design of electron storage rings for the NSLS which have the potential of very high power outputs in the radiation beams is discussed. The power density in the X-ray beam of the large ring at 2.5 GeV, 500 ma is so large that special care must be taken with cooling to avoid melting the aluminum at critical regions. Aluminum alloys lose nearly all of the mechanical rigidity above 250°C. At 200°C gas diffusion may be troublesome. An attempt to limit vacuum system surface temperatures to 150°C will be made and they must not go above 175°C on the aluminum surfaces. The heating problem is so critical that simple approximations are hazardous. The heat transfer for the two-dimensional case of a narrow strip of heat input to the surface of a metal sheet backed by water has been calculated. General beam power relationships are derived in a previous report. A collection of the working formulas and numerical examples are given.

Book excerpt: A novel, silicon crystal monochromator has been designed and tested for use on undulator and focused wiggler beamlines at third-generation synchrotron sources. The crystal utilizes a thin, partially transmitting diffracting element fabricated within a liquid-nitrogen cooled, monolithic block of silicon. This report summarizes the results from performance tests conducted at the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF) using a focused wiggler beam and at the Advanced Photon Source (APS) on an undulator beamline. These experiments indicate that a cryogenic crystal can handle the very high power and power density x-ray beams of modem synchrotrons with sub-arcsec thermal broadening of the rocking curve. The peak power density absorbed on the surface of the crystal at the ESRF exceeded go W/mm2 with an absorbed power of 166 W, this takes into account the spreading of the beam due to the Bragg angle of 11.4°. At the APS, the peak heat flux incident on the crystal was 1.5 W/mA/mm2 with a power of 6.1 W/mA for a 2.0 H x 2.5 V mm2 beam at an undulator gap of 11.1 mm and stored current up to 96 mA.
