Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High desired fertility is an important factor contributing to the population explosion in sub-Saharan Africa. On a broad sample of 910 respondents from the rural areas of Uganda this paper assesses the impact of health risks, economic contributions from children, traditional community institutions and unequal position of women on desired fertility levels. The paper further scrutinizes how these determinants are affected by education. The results show that fear of diseases and involvement in traditional clan institutions increase desired number of children. Interestingly, these effects can be remarkably mitigated through education that improves the individual health prevention as well as reduces the influence of clans. Economic incentives for having children seem to be less significant than other factors. In addition, a very significant difference in desired fertility between men and women emerges, nevertheless education leads both to reduction and convergence of their desired fertility levels. All these findings suggest that education stimulates a complex change in fertility preferences and underline the importance of education as efficient tool for reducing rapid population growth.

As of January 2016, the population of Uganda was estimated to have increased by 3.58%. Uganda possesses a large rural population, which has a high unmet need for contraception. Indeed, Uganda has high Total Fertility Rates (TFRs), reaching 6,2 in 2011 according to UDHS 2011, which puts pressure on the reproductive health services. Although since 2000 Uganda has been implementing a Sector Wide Approach (SWAp) to health sector coordination and support, its population still needs to resolve urgent Sexual and Reproductive Health (SRH) issues. This report will look at the SRH of young people who are defined as those between the age of 15-24; this age bracket also covers the crucial adolescent age bracket of 15-19 years. This report begins with an introduction which gives a background on the state of Uganda and the sprouting of its health system. These two factors have a direct and an imminent impact on the state of SRH, its policy, achievements and challenges. This report will further describe the main data sources and its collection. It will then focus on four areas of young people's SRH notably contraception and fertility, maternal health, abortion and HIV/AIDS. Each field consists of trends and patterns, programmes, policies and challenges. Finally, the conclusion will describe the future of SRH in Uganda.

They have traditionally been viewed as repositories of information and wisdom, and are critical pillars of the community but as the HIV/AIDS pandemic destroys family systems, the elderly increasingly have to deal with the loss of their own support while absorbing the additional responsibilities of caring for their orphaned grandchildren. Aging in Sub-Saharan Africa explores ways to promote U.S. research interests and to augment the sub-Saharan governments' capacity to address the many challenges posed by population aging. Five major themes are explored in the book such as the need for a basic definition of "older person," the need for national governments to invest more in basic research and the coordination of data collection across countries, and the need for improved dialogue between local researchers and policy makers. This book makes three major recommendations: 1) the development of a research agenda 2) enhancing research opportunity and implementation and 3) the translation of research findings.

Book excerpt: The technologies of information and communications and their application are becoming central issues for all governments trying to achieve long-run growth and international competitiveness. This country study provides a comprehensive analysis of the role of informatics in economic development and examines Turkey's efforts to develop its capacity in those areas. During the 1980s, Turkey laid the foundation for its transition to an information-based economy by liberalizing finance and investment regulations and by reducing barriers to competition. Tariffs on computer equipment were slashed, and the government embarked on a program of investment in the communications system. Investors responded, particularly in the finance and travel sectors and in select operations of large corporations. But the largest consumer of these technologies is still the Turkish government. And gains in productivity expected from modernization have not yet been widely evident. This study says that the most effective policy to promote an information-based economy is a commitment to open competitive markets. The major factor in that commitment is building up an educated workforce. Although Turkey's performance in this area is better than most developing countries', this report contends it needs to do more to meet its goal of full participation in the new era of informatics. The study contains cross-country comparative data throughout the book and in annexes.

Volume 3 focuses on developments since the publication of DCP2 and will also include the transition to older childhood, in particular, the overlap and commonality with the child development volume. The DCP3 evaluation of these conditions produced three key findings: 1. There is significant difficulty in measuring the burden of key conditions such as unintended pregnancy, unsafe abortion, nonsexually transmitted infections, infertility, and violence against women. 2. Investments in the continuum of care can have significant returns for improved and equitable access, health, poverty, and health systems. 3. There is a large difference in how RMNCH conditions affect different income groups; investments in RMNCH can lessen the disparity in terms of both health and financial risk.

This takeoff can be abetted by a demographic dividend from the changes in population age structure. Declines in child mortality, followed by declines in fertility, produce a 'bulge' generation and a large number of working age people, giving a boost to the economy. In the short run lower fertility leads to lower youth dependency rates and greater female labor force participation outside the home. Smaller family sizes also mean more resources to invest in the health and education per child boosting worker productivity. In the long run increased life spans from health improvements mean that this large, high-earning cohort will also want to save for retirement, creating higher savings and investments, leading to further productivity gains. Two things are required for the demographic dividend to generate an African economic takeoff. The first is to speed up the fertility decline that is currently slow or stalled in many countries. The second is economic policies that take advantage of the opportunity offered by demography. While demographic change can produce more, and high quality, workers, this potential workforce needs to be productively employed if Africa is to reap the dividend. However, once underway, the relationship between demographic change and human development works in both directions, creating a virtuous cycle that can accelerate fertility decline, social development, and economic growth. Empirical evidence points to three key factors for speeding the fertility transition: child health, female education, and women's empowerment, particularly through access to family planning. Harnessing the dividend requires job creation for the large youth cohorts entering working age, and encouraging foreign investment until domestic savings and investment increase. The appropriate mix of policies in each country depends on their stage of the demographic transition.
