Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives the readers an introduction to experimental and theoretical knowledge acquired by large-scale laser laboratories that are dealing with extra-high peak power and ultrashort laser pulses for research of terawatt (TW), petawatt (PW), or near-future exawatt (EW) laser interactions, for soft X-ray sources, for acceleration of particles, or for generation of hot dense thermal plasma for the laser fusion. The other part of this book is dealing with the small-scale laser laboratories that are using for its research on commercial sources of laser radiation, nanosecond (ns), picosecond (ps), or femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, either for basic research or for more advanced applications. This book is divided into six main sections dealing with short and ultrashort laser pulses, laser-produced soft X-ray sources, large-scale high-power laser systems, free-electron lasers, fiber-based sources of short optical pulse, and applications of short pulse lasers. In each chapter readers can find fascinating topics related to the high energy and/or short pulse laser technique. Individual chapters should serve the broad spectrum of readers of different expertise, layman, undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, and engineers, who may in this book find easily explained fundamentals as well as advanced principles of particular subjects related to these phenomena.

Book Few Cycle Laser Pulse Generation and Its Applications

Download or read book Few Cycle Laser Pulse Generation and Its Applications written by Franz X. Kärtner and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-09-14 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers the physics, technology and applications of short pulse laser sources that generate pulses with durations of only a few optical cycles. The basic design considerations for the different systems such as lasers, parametric amplifiers and external compression techniques which have emerged over the last decade are discussed to give researchers and graduate students a thorough introduction to this field. The existence of these sources has opened many new fields of research that were not possible before. These are UV and EUV generation from table-top systems using high-harmonic generation, frequency metrology enabling optical frequency counting, high-resolution optical coherence tomography, strong-field ultrafast solid-state processes and ultrafast spectroscopy, to mention only a few. Many new applications will follow. The book attempts to give a comprehensive, while not excessive, introduction to this exciting new field that serves both experienced researchers and graduate students entering the field. The first half of the book covers the current physical principles, processes and design guidelines to generate pulses in the optical range comprising only a few cycles of light. Such as the generation of relatively low energy pulses at high repetition rates directly from the laser, parametric generation of medium energy pulses and high-energy pulses at low repetition rates using external compression in hollow fibers. The applications cover the revolution in frequency metrology and high-resolution laser spectroscopy to electric field synthesis in the optical range as well as the emerging field of high-harmonic generation and attosecond science, high-resolution optical imaging and novel ultrafast dynamics in semiconductors. These fields benefit from the strong electric fields accompanying these pulses in solids and gases during events comprising only a few cycles of light.

Book High Intensity Physics with a Table top 20 TW Laser System

Download or read book High Intensity Physics with a Table top 20 TW Laser System written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this project was to develop a high peak power laser system (100 TW) and begin initial high intensity experiments that exploit its short pulse width (30 fs) and high repetition rate (1 - 10 Hz). Such a laser system presents unique capabilities such as permitting ultrafast time-resolved plasma physics experiments by probing the plasma with the 30 fs laser pulse. The high repetition rate also allows detailed, systematic studies of phenomena, not possible with large, single shot laser systems. During the previous year we have made good progress on the development of the laser. We have demonstrated the production of pulses up to the 5 TW level at 10 Hz and have installed an additional amplifier to take the system to 20 TW. We have pulse compressed the pulses to 30 fs and have developed a number of diagnostics to characterize the laser prepulse. During this year we have also activated a target chamber to begin plasma physics experiments in gas jet targets.

Book Short Pulse Laser Systems for Biomedical Applications

Download or read book Short Pulse Laser Systems for Biomedical Applications written by Kunal Mitra and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-15 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents practical information on the clinical applications of short pulse laser systems and the techniques for optimizing these applications in a manner that will be relevant to a broad audience, including engineering and medical students as well as researchers, clinicians, and technicians. Short pulse laser systems are useful for both subsurface tissue imaging and laser induced thermal therapy (LITT), which hold great promise in cancer diagnostics and treatment. Such laser systems may be used alone or in combination with optically active nanoparticles specifically administered to the tissues of interest for enhanced contrast in imaging and precise heating during LITT. Mathematical and computational models of short pulse laser-tissue interactions that consider the transient radiative transport equation coupled with a bio-heat equation considering the initial transients of laser heating were developed to analyze the laser-tissue interaction during imaging and therapy. Experiments were first performed to characterize the tissue optical properties needed to optimize the dose for thermal therapy. Experiments were then performed on animal models to characterize the heat affected zone for LITT. The experimental measurements were also validated using the computational models.

Book High Power Energy Lasers in Our Life

Download or read book High Power Energy Lasers in Our Life written by Victor V. Apollonov and published by Nova Publishers. This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book High Power Lasers in Our Life is devoted to the blessed memory of the author's teacher and colleague, A.M. Prokhorov Nobel Prize winner and the founder of the General Physics Institute RAS. The general idea of this book is to discuss high-power, high-frequency, pulse-periodic laser systems, suggested and developed together with A.M. Prokhorov. In the near future, they will find a lot of new and very effective applications in the area of energy transfer systems, ecology, machinery, space engineering, engineering of hard ice in the Arctic, acceleration of charged particles produced by high energy lasers and many others. A laser-plasma generator of charged ions produces a large number of heavy ions in the regime of short periodic pulses, which is of interest for ion accelerators operating in the pulse-periodic regime as well as a topic of high interest. This book has considered in detail a new approach to the problem of a laser jet engine creation, which is based on the resonance merging of shock waves generated by an optical pulsating discharge, produced by such a laser. To obtain an optical pulsating discharge, which is the source of EMI (a wide spectrum of light and sound), we suggested the usage of high-power pulse-periodic laser radiation, which can be generated by a big aperture of carbon dioxide, chemical and mono-module disk type solid-state laser systems with LD pumping. Future developments of disk laser technology as most effective and scalable to the level of hundreds of kW are under consideration in this book as well. A laser-plasma based generator of highly charged ions produces a large number of particles in the regime of short periodic pulses, which is of interest for ion accelerators operating in the pulse-periodic regime as well as a topic of high interest. The source of this type is also promising for effective use in the field of heavy-ion fusion, brittle materials figure cutting, oil films elimination from water surfaces and so on. This book will be of great interest for many different communities: students, scientists, teachers, and intellectually advanced people. The future of high power, high repetition rate lasers is very bright!
