Book High energy Short pulse Carbon dioxide Lasers

Download or read book High energy Short pulse Carbon dioxide Lasers written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lasers for fusion application represent a special class of short-pulse generators; not only must they generate extremely short temporal pulses of high quality, but they must do this at ultra-high powers and satisfy other stringent requirements by this application. This paper presents the status of the research and development of carbon-dioxide laser systems at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, vis-a-vis the fusion requirements.

Book excerpt: The CO2-laser technology may be considered the most advanced in the laser field. Research has been stimulated strongly because of its high potential for many scientific and industrial applications. This book is primarily devoted to the main, more established developments of the CO2-laser. Advances in continuous systems, pulsed systems, mode-locked pulses, and the amplification of short pulses are dealt with in detail. This is done by giving an extensive treatment of relevant molecular physics, gas kinetics, excitation and relaxation processes, and laser physics pertinent to CO2. It also provides a thorough theoretical background of specific technologies used in various devices. Many numerical values of physical constants and accurate spectroscopic data of CO2 isotopes are included.

Book High Energy and Short Pulse Lasers

Download or read book High Energy and Short Pulse Lasers written by Richard Viskup and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2016-09-07 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book gives the readers an introduction to experimental and theoretical knowledge acquired by large-scale laser laboratories that are dealing with extra-high peak power and ultrashort laser pulses for research of terawatt (TW), petawatt (PW), or near-future exawatt (EW) laser interactions, for soft X-ray sources, for acceleration of particles, or for generation of hot dense thermal plasma for the laser fusion. The other part of this book is dealing with the small-scale laser laboratories that are using for its research on commercial sources of laser radiation, nanosecond (ns), picosecond (ps), or femtosecond (fs) laser pulses, either for basic research or for more advanced applications. This book is divided into six main sections dealing with short and ultrashort laser pulses, laser-produced soft X-ray sources, large-scale high-power laser systems, free-electron lasers, fiber-based sources of short optical pulse, and applications of short pulse lasers. In each chapter readers can find fascinating topics related to the high energy and/or short pulse laser technique. Individual chapters should serve the broad spectrum of readers of different expertise, layman, undergraduate and postgraduate students, scientists, and engineers, who may in this book find easily explained fundamentals as well as advanced principles of particular subjects related to these phenomena.

Book Short Pulse Electric CO2 Laser Research

Download or read book Short Pulse Electric CO2 Laser Research written by G. S. Janes and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical model was developed for the CO2 laser operating in a short pumping time, gain switched, mode-locked mode of operation. This model predicted the performance of a nanosecond E-beam ionizer-sustainer laser oscillator. Additional investigations showed the possibility of providing high energy nanosecond pulses from a CO2 laser MOPA chain and predicted output energies presently achievable with devices in existence and under construction. Modifications were designed and incorporated to an existing AERL E-beam ionizer-sustainer laser and demonstrated the capability of operating the device in a gain switched mode. Further investigations and experiments under other contracts and with internal funding are in process to achieve 0.1 - 1.0 joule pulses in one nanosecond as well as amplification experiments once this output is achieved.

Book A Rapidly tuned Short pulse length High repetition rate CO2 Laser for IR Dial

Download or read book A Rapidly tuned Short pulse length High repetition rate CO2 Laser for IR Dial written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 13 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Analysis of noise sources in Differential Absorption LIDAR (DIAL) in the infrared region of the spectrum indicates that the signal-to-noise ratio for direct detection can be improved if multiple-wavelength, short-pulse-length beams are transmitted and received at high repetition rates. Atmospheric effects can be minimized, albedo can be rapidly scanned, and uncorrelated speckle can be acquired at the maximum possible rate. A compact, rugged, RF-excited waveguide laser can produce 15 nanosecond pulses at a 100 kHz rate with sufficient energy per pulse to reach the speckle limit of the signal-to-noise ratio. A high-repetition-rate laser has been procured and will be used to verify these signal and noise scaling relationships at high repetition rates. Current line-tuning devices are mechanical and are capable of switching lines at a rate up to a few hundred Hertz. Acousto-optic modulators, deflectors or tunable filters can be substituted for these mechanical devices in the resonator of a CO2 laser and used to rapidly line-tune the laser across the 9 and 10 micron bands at a rate as high as 100 kHz. Several configurations for line tuning using acousto-optic and electro-optic devices with and without gratings are presented. The merits of and constraints on each design are also discussed. A pair of large aperture, acousto-optic deflectors has been purchased and the various line-tuning designs will be evaluated in a conventional, glass tube, CO2 laser, with a view to incorporation into the high-repetition-rate, waveguide laser. A computer model of the dynamics of an RF-excited, short-pulse-length, high-repetition-rate waveguide laser has been developed. The model will be used to test the consequences of various line-tuning designs.
