Book High Conductivity Channels in Space

Download or read book High Conductivity Channels in Space written by Victor Apollonov and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-03 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book discusses the physics of conductive channel development in space, air and vacuums and summarizes the attempts to create super-long conductive channels to study the upper atmosphere and to complete specific tasks related to energy transmission from the space to earth with high-voltage high repetition rate electrical sources. Conductive channels are produced by the laser jet engine vehicle-propulsion under the influence of powerful high repetition rate pulse-periodic laser radiation by CO2-laser, solid state Nd YAG,HF/DF laser systems generated with each pulse of the powerful laser conductive dust plasma. The book also presents the experimental and theoretical results of conductive canal modeling: the laser jet engine vehicle “Impulsar”, which can reach the lower layers of the ionosphere in several hundred seconds. Further, the book explores the development of lightning protection systems. The so-called long laser spark is generated to provide the conditions for connecting a thunderstorm cloud with a grounded metal rod, i.e. a classical lightning rod. Such conductivity channels can be used for energy transmission, overvoltage protection systems, transport of charged particle beams and plasma antennas. It provides the theoretical and experimental basis of high repetition rate P-P mode of operation for high power lasers (COIL, HF/DF, CO2,Nd YAG). It describes high efficiency and excellent beam quality disk lasers used for numerous applications, including surface treatment of dielectric materials in microelectronics, cutting, drilling, welding, polishing and cleaning of the surface and other technological operations. Lastly it investigates how megawatt mono-module disk lasers could be used to solve various problems: small satellites launched by lasers, formation of super-long conducting channels in space and atmosphere, cleaning of the near-earth space from the space debris and related applications.

Book Small High Repetition Rate HF and DF Lasers

Download or read book Small High Repetition Rate HF and DF Lasers written by Walter A. Riessler and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Measurements are presented of the multiline spectral output, output power as a function of pulse-repetition rate, and V-I (voltage-current) characteristics of small pulsed hydrogen fluoride (HF) and deuterium fluoride (DF) lasers that have been operated at repetition rates up to 1 kHz. Results indicate that observed reductions in output power at high repetition rates are due to an insufficient gas flow that (1) allows the ground state population to build up, (2) reduces population inversion between the first vibrational state and the ground state, and (3) introduces discharge instabilities that severely limit the pulse-rate capabilities. Average powers are reported to vary linearly with pulse-repetition rate up to 400 Hz, with typical pulse energies of 10 and 4 mJ for small HF and DF lasers respectively with discharge lengths of only 10 cm. Book Comparison of Hf and Df Continuous Chemical Lasers

Download or read book Comparison of Hf and Df Continuous Chemical Lasers written by Donald J. Spencer and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A continuous DF chemical laser radiating at approximately 4 microns is reported. Population inversion is obtained by diffusing D2 into a supersonic free jet containing F atoms. The performance of the DF laser is compared with a similar HF laser previously reported. The ratio of DF to HF laser output power is 0.7 for fixed supersonic jet conditions and the same molar flow of H2 and D2. The efficiency of conversion of chemical energy to laser energy is approximately 12% and 8% for the HF and DF lasers, respectively. (Author).

Book Reacting Flow and Pressure Recovery Processes in HF DF Chemical Lasers

Download or read book Reacting Flow and Pressure Recovery Processes in HF DF Chemical Lasers written by Walter R Warren (Jr) and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 45 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Several properties of gas dynamic processes that occur in flowing gas lasers are discussed and their importance in establishing laser performance is outlined. The continuous HF (or DF) supersonic diffusion chemical laser is chosen to illustrate the coupling between chemical energy release and fluid dynamics in a laser of current interest. A simplified quasi-one-dimensional analysis is used to illustrate the energy release rates in different parts of a combustion-heated DF laser. The complex nature of the reacting mixing flow in the lasing zone is described, and the properties of the initial reaction generated shock waves in the flow are estimated through a displacement thickness analysis. Finally, a partial constant area concept for use with a supersonic diffusion chemical laser is analyzed. (Modified author abstract).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the thirty years since the invention of the CO2 gas laser, the major design issue has shifted from how to obtain the desired power level to how to achieve reliable operation. At the same time, the opening of many laser development facilities in the Former Soviet Union has allowed their achievements and design approaches to be understood and appreciated for the first time. Further, the industrial laser user community has identified a number of emerging applications at higher power levels (15-20 kW) than are attainable by most commercial devices. In High Power Lasers - Science and Engineering, the designers, developers and users of high-power gas laser systems discuss design approaches, methods of enhancing performance, new applications, and user requirements.

Book Initial Performance of a Cw Chemical Laser

Download or read book Initial Performance of a Cw Chemical Laser written by Donald J. Spencer and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Performance of a continuous HF chemical laser is presented. Population inversion was obtained by diffusion of H2 into a supersonic jet containing F atoms (H2 + F yields HF(v) + H, Delta H = -31.7 kcal/mole). A peak power of 630 W was obtained with an F atom flow rate of 0.040 mole/sec. The efficiency of conversion of chemical energy to laser energy was 12%. Performance of a corresponding DF laser is also given. Major laser output is from 2-1 and 1-0 transitions for both lasers. Radiation is at 2.6 to 2.9 microns and 3.6 to 4.0 microns for the HF and DF lasers, respectively. The ratio of DF to HF laser power is 0.7 under similar flow conditions. (Author).

Book Laser Technology Selected Articles

Download or read book Laser Technology Selected Articles written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 49 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents high-energy CW HF/DF chemical lasers developed under the U.S. Navy Sealite program and the Alpha program of the DARPA Triad program, and a brief account of Soviet chemical lasers. Continuous wave HF/DF chemical lasers were developed starting in the late sixties as high-power lasers of consistent interest to military circles. These are lasers that have the most matured technology among present-day high-energy lasers. It is hoped that in the near future CW HF/DF chemical lasers can be developed into a space laser weapon to deal with ICBMs. CW HF/DF chemical lasers are an integration of technologies in gas dynamics, chemistry, fluid chemistry, optics, and lasers. By using the branching chain reaction of heat liberation, inversion of the population ratio is generated to obtain lasers.
