Book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research

Download or read book Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research written by National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2016-08-09 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary human activities that release carbon dioxide (CO2) into the atmosphere are the combustion of fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and oil) to generate electricity, the provision of energy for transportation, and as a consequence of some industrial processes. Although aviation CO2 emissions only make up approximately 2.0 to 2.5 percent of total global annual CO2 emissions, research to reduce CO2 emissions is urgent because (1) such reductions may be legislated even as commercial air travel grows, (2) because it takes new technology a long time to propagate into and through the aviation fleet, and (3) because of the ongoing impact of global CO2 emissions. Commercial Aircraft Propulsion and Energy Systems Research develops a national research agenda for reducing CO2 emissions from commercial aviation. This report focuses on propulsion and energy technologies for reducing carbon emissions from large, commercial aircraftâ€" single-aisle and twin-aisle aircraft that carry 100 or more passengersâ€"because such aircraft account for more than 90 percent of global emissions from commercial aircraft. Moreover, while smaller aircraft also emit CO2, they make only a minor contribution to global emissions, and many technologies that reduce CO2 emissions for large aircraft also apply to smaller aircraft. As commercial aviation continues to grow in terms of revenue-passenger miles and cargo ton miles, CO2 emissions are expected to increase. To reduce the contribution of aviation to climate change, it is essential to improve the effectiveness of ongoing efforts to reduce emissions and initiate research into new approaches.

Book Carbon Management

    Book Details:
  • Author : National Research Council
  • Publisher : National Academies Press
  • Release : 2001-08-15
  • ISBN : 0309170664
  • Pages : 236 pages

Download or read book Carbon Management written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2001-08-15 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Considerable international concerns exist about global climate change and its relationship to the growing use of fossil fuels. Carbon dioxide is released by chemical reactions that are employed to extract energy from fuels, and any regulatory policy limiting the amount of CO2 that could be released from sequestered sources or from energy-generating reactions will require substantial involvement of the chemical sciences and technology R&D community. Much of the public debate has been focused on the question of whether global climate change is occurring and, if so, whether it is anthropogenic, but these questions were outside the scope of the workshop, which instead focused on the question of how to respond to a possible national policy of carbon management. Previous discussion of the latter topic has focused on technological, economic, and ecological aspects and on earth science challenges, but the fundamental science has received little attention. This workshop was designed to gather information that could inform the Chemical Sciences Roundtable in its discussions of possible roles that the chemical sciences community might play in identifying and addressing underlying chemical questions.

Book Liquid Fuels as Jet Fuels and Propellants

Download or read book Liquid Fuels as Jet Fuels and Propellants written by Mohammad Hossein Keshavarz and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, it has been important for scientists and chemical industries to introduce and develop new liquid fuels as jet fuels and propellants for propulsion purposes. Different aspects should be considered for the selection of a good candidate such as combustion performance, desired physical properties, noncarcinogenic and less toxicity. New synthetic hydrocarbon fuels with favorable combustion performance and physical properties have been considered as desirable jet fuels. They can be used in aircrafts such as military jets because of their higher volumetric energy density. A liquid-propellant rocket uses liquid propellants for propulsion. Liquid propellants should have the desirable properties of high energy density per unit mass, high specific impulse, and short ignition delays. Hypergolic propellants as important classes of liquid propellants are characterized by spontaneous reaction upon fuel and oxidizer mixing and high energy yield. Moreover, they should be relatively ignitable and have a small ignition time delay. This book reviews some efforts that have been done to introduce new candidates to replace conventional hydrazine fuels because they are acutely toxic and suspected carcinogens, costly safety precautions and handling procedures are required. This book reviews the latest advances in liquid fuels, which may be used as jet fuels and liquid propellants. Important properties for assessment of a suitable liquid are demonstrated. This book can be used for graduate students in the field of chemistry and chemical engineering. It may also be useful for scientists and researchers who work on the development of new liquid fuels with high performance as well as those that are noncarcinogenic or have less toxicity.

Book Optimizing the Performance and Emissions of an Advanced Diesel Engine for Dual Fuel Operation

Download or read book Optimizing the Performance and Emissions of an Advanced Diesel Engine for Dual Fuel Operation written by M Muralidharan and published by Mohammed Abdul Sattar. This book was released on 2024-03-24 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy is widely regarded as one of the key contributors to economic development and personal comfort. Economic expansion and energy use are closely related to one another. The availability of affordable, environmentally acceptable energy sources is necessary for the growth of an economy and for it to remain competitive on a global scale. Conversely, the level of economic development is considered to be affected by energy consumption. Due to rising population and economic development, consumption has recently increased. We are fortunate to have both moderate and renewable energy resources. We lack resources with a high energy density, such as nuclear power plants and fossil fuels. Diesel engines have slowly become more popular over the past century as a fuel-efficient and dependable form of transportation for commodities and the general public, as well as for other essential social needs, including small-scale power generation and other similar activities. They often have advantages over spark-ignition engines due to their reduced regulated emissions of CO, unburned HC & carbon dioxide (CO2) and better thermal efficiency. Diesel engines also have the advantage of using low-energy alternative fuels like biogas since they can run at a higher compression ratio. On the other hand, diesel engines generate dangerous pollutants, including PM and NOx. Because of their potential health hazards and effect on visibility, these emissions are a hazard. When exposed, particulate emissions have the potential to cause occupational cancer and have a number of other negative health effects. Diesel engines, when used as part of a transportation system, are widely acknowledged as a significant source of ambient particulate matter. Natural gas, a widely recognized gaseous alternative fuel, consists of various gas species and is derived from fossil sources. It is possible to find fossil natural gas either by itself or in conjunction with other fossil fuels (eg, coal in coal beds and crude oil in oil fields). Natural gas's properties are fundamentally identical to those of methane (CH4) which is its principal composition.
