Book High Efficiency Ultra Thin Cadmium Telluride CdTe Solar Cells

Download or read book High Efficiency Ultra Thin Cadmium Telluride CdTe Solar Cells written by Nowshad Amin and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2013 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin film cadmium telluride absorbers with cadmium sulphide hetero-junction partner are promising candidates for high efficiency low cost solutions of solar energy harvesting devices. These devices have band gaps well-suited for effective absorption of sunlight. Most importantly, the materials used in these devices can be deposited in a variety of industry-friendly ways, so that the cost associated with manufacturing is generally lower than other available technologies. Although poly-crystalline CdS has been found to be the best suited heterojunction partner for CdTe solar cell, the conventional polycrystalline CdS/CdTe cell has few issues that limit device performance. In order to overcome these problems, this study proposes the introduction of poly-CdS to amorphous oxygenated CdS (a-CdS: O) as window layer. The a-CdS: O window material has higher optical band gap (2.5-3.1 eV), better lattice match with CdTe absorber materials and reduced inter-diffusion tendency of CdS and CdTe layers. This book systematically demonstrates the conversion process of poly CdS to a-CdS: O and develops a strategy for the fabrication of suitable a-CdS: O layer to be applied in CdTe solar ce

This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thin films of CdTe have been vacuum deposited onto glass and ITO-coated glass substrates using a hot-wall technique. Improved source conditions and system cleanliness have enabled large pinhole-free regions capable of providing our first large area evaporated Au devices (greater than 1 cm2). An optimized Au thickness has been determined and characterized in terms of sheet resistance and optical transmission. An evaporated Au/Ag combined grid and a SiO AR coating have yielded 1 cm2 active area Au-CdTe-ITO devices with J/sub sc/ = 13 mA/cm2 and V/sub oc/ of 0.43 volt. The 1.4% efficiency is only temporarily limited by the uncharacteristically low 0.25 fill factor which is believed to be caused by an anomaly near the ITO contact. A three-source system with effusion cell type sources and a rotary shutter has been designed, built, and successfully tested. This more sophisticated system should greatly improve our control over film and device reproducibility and also provide greater versatility in controlling doping concentration and film stoichiometry. In addition, this new system will allow for in situ deposition of an In flash in order to improve the ITO-CdTe contact behavior. Furthermore, the system offers possibilities for p-n junction deposition without breaking vacuum.

Download or read book High Efficiency Thin Film CdTe Solar Cells Second Quarterly Progress Report June 19 September 18 1979 written by and published by . This book was released on 1979 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the second quarter of this program primary emphasis was put into depositing and evaluating both n and p-type CdTe films on a variety of conducting and non-conducting substrates. Improvements in the deposition apparatus permitted preparation of a large number of CdTe films and numerous analytic techniques available at Tufts University were utilized to examine these films. It was found that the introduction of a thin (100 A). In layer between the ITO and the CdTe significantly reduced the previously observed barrier present at the ITO/n-CdTe interface without adversely reducing optical transmission. While the resistivity of the films is still rather high, very recent results show that proper changes in procedure are capable of markedly lowering the resistivity. Preliminary Schottky barrier devices have been made which show promising photovoltaic characteristics.

Book Advanced Concepts in Photovoltaics

Download or read book Advanced Concepts in Photovoltaics written by Arthur J. Nozik and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2014-07-10 with total page 631 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photovoltaic systems enable the sun’s energy to be converted directly into electricity using semiconductor solar cells. The ultimate goal of photovoltaic research and development is to reduce the cost of solar power to reach or even become lower than the cost of electricity generated from fossil and nuclear fuels. The power conversion efficiency and the cost per unit area of the phototvoltaic system are critical factors that determine the cost of photovoltaic electricity. Until recently, the power conversion efficiency of single-junction photovoltaic cells has been limited to approximately 33% - the so-called Shockley-Queisser limit. This book presents the latest developments in photovoltaics which seek to either reach or surpass the Shockley-Queisser limit, and to lower the cell cost per unit area. Progress toward this ultimate goal is presented for the three generations of photovoltaic cells: the 1st generation based on crystalline silicon semiconductors; the 2nd generation based on thin film silicon, compound semiconductors, amorphous silicon, and various mesoscopic structures; and the 3rd generation based on the unique properties of nanoscale materials, new inorganic and organic photoconversion materials, highly efficient multi-junction cells with low cost solar concentration, and novel photovoltaic processes. The extent to which photovoltaic materials and processes can meet the expectations of efficient and cost effective solar energy conversion to electricity is discussed. Written by an international team of expert contributors, and with researchers in academia, national research laboratories, and industry in mind, this book is a comprehensive guide to recent progress in photovoltaics and essential for any library or laboratory in the field.

Book Development of High efficiency Thin film CdTe Solar Cells Annual Subcontract Report January 1 1993 December 31 1993

Download or read book Development of High efficiency Thin film CdTe Solar Cells Annual Subcontract Report January 1 1993 December 31 1993 written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polycrystalline thin film CdTe solar cells are one of the leading candidates for terrestrial photovoltaic applications. Theoretical calculations project an efficiency of 27% for single crystal, single junction CdTe cells, and the practically achievable efficiency for polycrystalline CdTe cells is 18-20%. Polycrystalline CdTe cells made by different groups show a significant variation in short circuit currents, open circuit voltages, and cell efficiencies. A better understanding of carrier loss and transport mechanism is crucial for explaining these differences, improving the yield, and bridging the gap between current and practically achievable limits in CdTe cell efficiencies. The goal of this program is to improve the understanding of the loss mechanisms in thin film CdS/CdTe solar cells and to improve their efficiency by characterizing the properties of the films as well as the finished devices.
