Book excerpt: Abstract : We demonstrate a high-efficiency mid-infrared picosecond optical parametric oscillator (OPO) based on MgO doped periodically poled lithium niobate (MgO:PPLN) with a laser diode array (LDA) pumped Innoslab amplifier as the pumping source. Under a 16 W synchronously pumping power, 4.5 W of idler light at 2896 nm is obtained. A tuning range of idler light from 2688 nm to 3016 nm is achieved, within which the highest optical-optical conversion efficiency from pump power to OPO output is 35.1%. Moreover, a signal light of ∼500 mW from 1644 to 1700 nm with a repetition rate of 233.8 MHz is generated.

This book was released on 2002 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Coherent optical sources in the mid-infrared region (mid-IR) are important fundamental tools for infrared countermeasures and battlefield remote sensing. Nonlinear optical effects can be applied to convert existing near-IR laser sources to radiate in the mid-IR. This research focused on achieving such a conversion with a quasi-phase matched optical parametric oscillators using orientation-patterned gallium arsenide (OPGaAs), a material that can be quasi-phased matched by periodically reversing the crystal structure during the epitaxial growth process. Although non-linear optical conversion was not ultimately achieved during this research, many valuable lessons were learned from working with this material. This thesis reviews the theory of nonlinear optics and explores the importance of accurate refractive index measurements to proper structure design. The details of four nonlinear optical experiments are presented recommendations are offered for the design of future OPGaAs crystals. Recommendations are also made for improved experimental techniques.

Book A New Generation of Ultrafast Oscillators for Mid Infrared Applications

Download or read book A New Generation of Ultrafast Oscillators for Mid Infrared Applications written by Nathalie Nagl and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-01 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the first successful realization of a compact, low-noise, and few-cycle light source in the mid-infrared wavelength region. By developing the technology of pumping femtosecond chromium-doped II-VI laser oscillators directly with the emission of broad-stripe single-emitter laser diodes, coherent light was generated with exceptionally low amplitude noise — crucial for numerous applications including spectroscopy at high sensitivities. Other key parameters of the oscillator's output, such as pulse duration and output power, matched and even surpassed previous state-of-the-art systems. As a demonstration of its unique capabilities, the oscillator's powerful output was used to drive — without further amplification — the nonlinear generation of coherent mid-infrared light spanning multiple octaves. The resulting table-top system uniquely combines high brilliance and ultrabroad spectral bandwidth in the important mid-infrared spectral range. The rapid development of this technology is comprehensively and lucidly documented in this PhD thesis. Together with a thorough review of literature and applications, and an extensive analysis of the theoretical foundations behind ultrafast laser oscillators, the thesis will serve as a valuable reference for the construction of a new generation of mid-infrared light sources.

Book Fiber Optical Parametric Oscillator for High Power High Efficiency Short Wavelength Generation

Download or read book Fiber Optical Parametric Oscillator for High Power High Efficiency Short Wavelength Generation written by and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report results from a contract tasking University of Southampton as follows. Optical parametric fiber oscillators are based on four-wave mixing. Four-wave mixing (FWM), like stimulated Raman scattering (SRS), relies on the third order nonlinearity of the fiber. Fiber Raman devices are capable of high efficiency (> 80%) and high power (> 10 W), but these generate wavelengths that are longer than the pump wavelength. By contrast, FWM is capable of generating shorter wavelengths than the pump, and this provides many new opportunities, including the possibility to generate high-power 800 nm radiation starting with highly efficient YDFLs. Whereas SRS ideally generates one Stokes photon for every converted pump photon, FWM generates one Stokes and one anti-Stokes photon for every two pump photons. Thus, for small wavelength shifts, the conversion efficiency into the shorter-wavelength anti-Stokes wave is limited to ~ 50%. However, for larger shifts the efficiency can be larger. For generation of 780 nm light from 1080 nm, the theoretical photon-energy limited conversion efficiency becomes 69%, achievable if all pump photons are converted to anti-Stokes (signal) and Stokes (idler) photons. Complete conversion of the pump photons is theoretically possible in the cw regime [1] and near-complete conversion has been demonstrated experimentally in the cw regime [2], [3]. However the powers have been relatively low and the frequency shifts relatively small. Furthermore the wavelengths have been around 1550 nm.

Book High Pulse Energy Near infrared Ultrafast Optical Parametric Oscillators

Download or read book High Pulse Energy Near infrared Ultrafast Optical Parametric Oscillators written by Tobias Paul Lamour and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A source-demand in the near- and mid-IR wavelength spectrum exists for various applications such as waveguide inscription, multiphoton imaging, and nonlinear spectroscopy. All of the applications seek for higher repetitions rates for faster processing speed, better signal to noise ratios or to improve the results for applications like laser waveguide inscription. This is in contrast to the high pulse energies, required to drive the nonlinear processes involved with these applications. Available systems are either based on low-energy, high-repetition-rate optical parametric oscillators or high-energy, low-repetition-rate optical parametric amplifiers. In this thesis a sources was developed that can bridge the wide gap between these two extremes, providing sufficient energy to drive nonlinear processes, with repetition rates in the MHz domain. This was achieved by introducing three techniques previously employed for energy scaling in laser cavities. Firstly an exchange from the conventionally used Ti:sapphire pump to a commercial high power Yb:fibre laser system readily scaled the usable pump energy. This was combined with a technique known as cavity-length extension, which allows a lowering of the cavity roundtrip time offering the build-up of pulses with increased energy. In a final stage, cavity-dumping on basis of an acousto-optic modulator was introduced into the a redesigned cavity. The combination of these three techniques, novel to synchronously pumped optical parametric oscillators, enabled the extraction of record-high pulse energies and peak powers.

Book Pump Tuning of a Mid infrared Whispering Gallery Optical Parametric Oscillator

Download or read book Pump Tuning of a Mid infrared Whispering Gallery Optical Parametric Oscillator written by N. Amiune and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Optical parametric oscillators (OPOs) constitute an important coherent, narrow-linewidth and widely tunable light source with applications in spectroscopy and many other fields. Their realizations based on whispering gallery resonators (WGRs) provide a small footprint and ultra-low thresholds, with demonstrations of tunability typically done via temperature variation. In this work, we show the pump tuning capabilities of a mm-sized WGR mid-infrared OPO made of CdSiP2. By tuning a telecom wavelength diode laser by 16 nm, we generate tunable light from 2708 to 3575 nm. Furthermore, we show controlled tuning in steps of 1 free spectral range (FSR) and the possibility of 12 GHz of continuous tuning. All these features are in good agreement with the theoretical predictions. We conclude that tuning from 2.4 to 4.9 μm is even possible, while still using commercially available near-infrared diode lasers. This work highlights the advantages of pump tuning of WGR OPOs and provides valuable insights for their precise control

Book Multi wavelength Injection Seeded Mid infrared Optical Parametric Oscillator for DIAL

Download or read book Multi wavelength Injection Seeded Mid infrared Optical Parametric Oscillator for DIAL written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 35 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have constructed and fielded a multi-wavelength injection seeded mid-IR OPO source for DIAL. This OPO system was built for ground based remote sensing measurements of species with both broad (300 cm−1) and narrow absorption bandwidths (0.07 cm−1 FWHM). The OPO utilizes a single frequency tunable diode laser for the injection seeded signal wavelength in the region from 6400 to 6700 cm−1 and an angle phase-matched 5 cm LiNbO3 crystal to provide large tuning excursions on a slow time scale. The pump was a diode pumped Nd:YAG MOPA (9398 cm−1) running at 180 Hz. This pump source was repeatedly injection seeded with a different wavelength on each of film sequential shots forming a set of three pulses having wavelength separations on the order of 0.4 cm−1 at a three color set repetition rate of 60 Hz. This combination of OPO signal and pump source produced a set of three time staggered idler wavelengths separated by 0.4 cm−1 with the center wavelength tunable from 2700 to 3000 cm−1. This OPO system was used in field test experiments to detect the release of chemicals from a standoff distance of 3.3 Km. We present key OPO design criteria, performance data, and numerical simulations that agree with our observations of pump induced spectral impurities in the OPO output.
