Book High Current Heavy Ion Beams in the Electrostatic Plasmalens

Download or read book High Current Heavy Ion Beams in the Electrostatic Plasmalens written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe applications of the electrostatic plasma lens for manipulating and focusing moderate energy, high current, broad, heavy ion beams. Use of a plasma lens in this way has been successfully demonstrated in a series of experiments carried out collaboratively between IP NASU (Kiev) and LBNL (Berkeley) in recent years. Here we briefly review the plasma lens fundamentals, peculiarities of focusing heavy ion beams, and summarize some recent developments (experiments, computer simulations, theory). We show that there is a very narrow range of low magnetic field for which the optical properties of the lens improve markedly. This opens up some attractive possibilities for the development of a new-generation compact lens based on permanent magnets. Preliminary experimental results obtained at Kiev and Berkeley on the operation of a permanent magnet plasma lens for manipulating wide aperture high-current heavy ion beams are presented and summarized.

Book Effect of the Electrostatic Plasma Lens on the Emittance of Ahigh current Heavy Ion Beam

Download or read book Effect of the Electrostatic Plasma Lens on the Emittance of Ahigh current Heavy Ion Beam written by and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We describe measurements we have made of the emittance of a high-current, moderate-energy ion beam after transport through a permanent-magnet electrostatic plasma lens. The results indicate the absence of emittance growth due to the lens, when the lens is adjusted for optimal beam focusing. The measured emittance for a 16 keV Cu{sup 2+} ion beam formed by a vacuum arc ion source was about 0.4 [pi] · mm · mrad at a beam current of 50 mA rising more-or-less linearly to 1.5 [pi] · mm · mrad at 250 mA, and was conserved in beam transport through the lens. These results have significance for the application of high-current ion sources and the electrostatic plasma lens to particle accelerator injection.

Book Emerging Applications of Vacuum Arc Produced Plasma Ion and Electron Beams

Download or read book Emerging Applications of Vacuum Arc Produced Plasma Ion and Electron Beams written by Efim Oks and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2003-02-28 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The NATO-sponsored Advanced Research Workshop (ARW) on "Emerging Applications of Vacuum-Arc-Produced Plasma, Ion and Electron Beams" was held at the Baikal Dunes Resort, Lake Baikal, Russia, on June 24-28, 2002. Participants were from NATO countries Belgium, Czech Republic, Germany, Poland, Turkey and the USA, and from NATO partner countries Bulgaria, Russia, Ukraine and Uzbekistan. The goal of the meeting was to bring together researchers involved in novel applications of plasmas and ion/electron beams formed from vacuum arc discharges, especially in less conventional or emerging scientific areas such as new perspectives on vacuum arc phenomena, generation of high charge state metal ions, heavy ion accelerator injection, multi-layer thin film synthesis, biological applications, generation of high-current high-density electron beams, and more. It was our hope that the meeting would engender new research directions and help to establish new collaborations, prompt new thinking for research and technology applications of vacuum arc science, and in general foster development of the field. The Workshop was a great success, as was clearly felt by all of the attendees. The small number of participants at the meeting tended to encourage a high level of closeness and communication between individuals. The location, a small resort on the western side of Lake Baikal in the vicinity of Irkutsk, was ideal - the isolated location, small and quiet, was excellent and was most conducive to discussion among individuals and small groups quite apart from the formal presentations.

Download or read book Cathodic Arcs written by André Anders and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-07-30 with total page 555 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cathodic arcs are among the longest studied yet least understood objects in science. Plasma-generating, tiny spots appear on the cathode; they are highly dynamic and hard to control. With an approach emphasizing the fractal character of cathode spots, strongly fluctuating plasma properties are described such as the presence of multiply charged ions that move with supersonic velocity. Richly illustrated, the book also deals with practical issues, such as arc source construction, macroparticle removal, and the synthesis of dense, well adherent coatings. The book spans a bridge from plasma physics to coatings technology based on energetic condensation, appealing to scientists, practitioners and graduate students alike.

Book Introduction to Plasma Dynamics

Download or read book Introduction to Plasma Dynamics written by A. I. Morozov and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 836 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the twenty-first century progresses, plasma technology will play an increasing role in our lives, providing new sources of energy, ion–plasma processing of materials, wave electromagnetic radiation sources, space plasma thrusters, and more. Studies of the plasma state of matter not only accelerate technological developments but also improve the understanding of natural phenomena. Beginning with an introduction to the characteristics and types of plasmas, Introduction to Plasma Dynamics covers the basic models of classical diffuse plasmas used to describe such phenomena as linear and shock waves, stationary flows, elements of plasma chemistry, and principles of plasma lasers. The author presents specific examples to demonstrate how to use the models and to familiarize readers with modern plasma technologies. The book describes structures of magnetic fields—one- and zero-dimensional plasma models. It considers single-, two-, and multi-component simulation models, kinetics and ionization processes, radiation transport, and plasma interaction with solid surfaces. The text also examines self-organization and general problems associated with instabilities in plasma systems. In addition, it discusses cosmic plasma dynamic systems, such as Earth’s magnetosphere, spiral nebulas, and plasma associated with the Sun. This text provides wide-range coverage of issues related to plasma dynamics, with a final chapter addressing advanced plasma technologies, including plasma generators, plasma in the home, space propulsion engines, and controlled thermonuclear fusion. It demonstrates how to approach the analysis of complex plasma systems, taking into account the diversity of plasma environments. Presenting a well-rounded introduction to plasma dynamics, the book takes into consideration the models of plasma phenomena and their relationships to one another as well as their applications.

Book Modeling of Novel Plasma Optical Systems

Download or read book Modeling of Novel Plasma Optical Systems written by Irina Litovko and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the review of the current status an ongoing theoretical, simulations and some experimental researches of the novel plasma dynamical devices based on the axial-symmetric cylindrical electrostatic plasma lens (PL) configuration and the fundamental plasma-optical principles of magnetic electron isolation and equipotentialization magnetic field lines. The crossed electric and magnetic fields plasma lens configuration provides us with the attractive and suitable method for establishing stable plasma discharge at low-pressure. Using plasma lens configuration in this way some novel cost-effective, low-maintenance, high-reliability plasma devices using permanent magnets were developed. In part, it was proposed and created device for ion treatment and deposition of exotic coatings, device for filtering dense plasma flow from micro-droplets, electrostatic plasma lens for focusing and manipulating wide aperture, high-current, low-energy, heavy metal ion plasma flow, and the effective lens was first proposed for manipulating high-current beams of negatively charged particles (negative ions and electrons). Here we mainly describe models and results of theoretical consideration and simulation of the novel generation cylindrical plasma devices.
