Book High brightness Electron Beams for Production of High Intensity Coherent Radiation for Scientific and Industrial Applications

Download or read book High brightness Electron Beams for Production of High Intensity Coherent Radiation for Scientific and Industrial Applications written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Relativistic electron beams with high six-dimensional phase space densities, i.e., high-brightness beams, are the basis for efficient generation of intense and coherent radiation beams for advanced scientific and industrial applications. The remarkable progress in synchrotrons radiation facilities from the first generation to the current, third-generation capability illustrates this point. With the recent development of the high-brightness electron gun based on laser-driven rf photocathodes, linacs have become another important option for high-brightness electron beams. With linacs of about 100 MeV, megawatt-class infrared free-electron lasers can be designed for industrial applications such as power beaming. With linacs of about 10 GeV, 1-Å x-ray beams with brightness and time resolution exceeding by several orders of magnitude the current synchrotrons radiation sources can be generated based on self-amplified spontaneous emission. Scattering of a high-brightness electron beam by high power laser beams is emerging as a compact method of generating short-pulse, bright x-rays. In the high-energy frontier, photons of TeV quantum energy could be generated by scattering laser beams with TeV electron beams in future linear colliders.

Book Research on the Physics of Ultra High Brightness Ultra Relativistic Electron Beams

Download or read book Research on the Physics of Ultra High Brightness Ultra Relativistic Electron Beams written by and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 87 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research supported by this grant has been focused on the physics relevant to the construction and use of state of the art high current, high brightness, ultra-relativistic electron beams in the energy range from 0.25 GeV to 1.1 GeV, namely, the 1 GeV Duke storage ring system. During this period, the Duke storage ring was commissioned and used for: production of coherent Uv radiation (from the OKA XUV EEL); production 0 spontaneous X-ray radiation: and production of a monochromatic gamma ray beam. A number of very successful theoretical results have been developed and tested. Most objectives specified in the proposal have been achieved. A number of initial objectives for the Duke storage ring have been exceeded during the commissioning of the storage ring and its subsystems. This research has led to the creation of a unique facility capable of producing high brightness electron beams with parameters exceeding initial design goals. These beams have been utilized for ground breaking achievements with the OKA FEL system, including the first and only UV FEL in the US and the first and only monochromatic gamma ray beam with tunable energy.

Book Collective Dynamics of High Brightness Electron Beam Compression and Manipulation

Download or read book Collective Dynamics of High Brightness Electron Beam Compression and Manipulation written by Jingyi Tang and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High brightness electron beams have revolutionized accelerator science and enabled a large range of high impact applications such as X-ray free electron lasers(XFEL), inverse Compton-scattering, plasma wakefield accelerators and future linear colliders. In pursue of higher beam brightness, collective effects become key limiting factors. Those collective effects happen during the beam generation, acceleration, compression and transport, including coherent synchrotron radiation, space charge and resistive wall wakefields. As people are entering the new parameter regime -- such as the generation of ultra-short electron bunches or ultra-high peak current -- collective effects can play a dominant role and classical theories of wakefield can break down. In this work we describe our efforts in understanding and controlling the collective dynamics of high-brightness electron beams. In the first half of the thesis, we focus on one of the most challenging beam dynamics problems in accelerator physics -- coherent synchrotron radiation (CSR) and introduce a novel computational model of 2D/3D CSR in relativistic beams. The model achieves both accurate and efficient simulations of CSR in the regime that conventional 1D models become invalid, which can be crucial for the design of next generation accelerators. In the second half, we switch gear to techniques that enable better control of the collective effects. Specifically we examine laser shaping techniques both in spatial and temporal domains as a powerful beam manipulation tool. We first discuss in detail the numerical and experimental studies using Laguerre-Gaussian mode laser in the laser heater to improve the microbunching instability suppression in XFEL drivers. Then we introduce temporal laser shaping to achieve flexible longitudinal phase space manipulation and apply it as an active out-coupling method for cavity-based free-electron lasers.

Book The Physics of High Brightness Beams

Download or read book The Physics of High Brightness Beams written by Jamie Rosenzweig and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000 with total page 628 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains the proceedings of the 1999 ICFA workshop on the physics of high brightness beams. The workshop took a snapshot in time of a fast moving, interdisciplinary field driven by advanced applications such as high gradient, high energy physics linear colliders, high gain free electron lasers, heavy ion fusion, and transmutation of nuclear materials. While the field of high brightness beam physics has traditionally been divided into disparate electron and heavy ion communities, the workshop brought the two types of researchers together, so that a sharing of insights and methods could be achieved. Thus, this book represents a unifying step in the development of the diverse fascinating discipline of high brightness beam physics, with its challenges rooted in collective, nonlinear particle motion and ultra-high electromagnetic energy density.

Book Considerations for High brightness Electron Sources

Download or read book Considerations for High brightness Electron Sources written by and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Particle accelerators are now used in many areas of physics research and in industrial and medical applications. New uses are being studied to address major societal needs in energy production, materials research, generation of intense beams of radiation at optical and suboptical wavelengths, treatment of various kinds of waste, and so on. Many of these modern applications require a high intensity beam at the desired energy, along with a very good beam quality in terms of the beam confinement, aiming, or focusing. Considerations for ion and electron accelerators are often different, but there are also many commonalties, and in fact, techniques derived for one should perhaps more often be considered for the other as well. We discuss some aspects of high-brightness electron sources here from that point of view. 6 refs.

Book Advanced R D for Electron and Photon Beams at Brookhaven National Laboratory

Download or read book Advanced R D for Electron and Photon Beams at Brookhaven National Laboratory written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Brookhaven Accelerator Test Facility consists of a 50-MeV linear accelerator and a laser system capable of generating short (a few picoseconds) laser pulses at both UV (266 nm) and infrared (10 [mu]m) wavelengths. With these systems in place, the ATF has unique capabilities for the study of fundamental interactions between charged-particle beams and intense electromagnetic radiation. The principal research goals of the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) axe the following. Laser Acceleration Program: We wig study the principles and techniques of particle acceleration at ultra-high frequencies (up to 30 THz) and with very high acceleration gradients (up to 1 GV/m). Production of Coherent Radiation: We wish to develop the next generation of photon sources with features like (a) short pulses (picoseconds or less), (b) coherence, and (c) high peak power. All of these attributes can be provided by free-electron lasers. High-brightness sources: A common denominator for the above programs is the need for electron beams with very small transverse and longitudinal emittances. We will devote a substantial amount of our resources to the production and understanding of electron beams that have these attributes. We will build advanced electron sources such as switched-power devices and rf guns with photocathodes. Important applications of this line of research include the development of high-luminosity linear colliders and free-electron lasers in the XUV regime.

Book Electron Beam Shaping and Its Applications

Download or read book Electron Beam Shaping and Its Applications written by Aliaksei Halavanau and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Transverse and longitudinal electron beam shaping is a crucial part of high-brightness electron accelerator operations. In this dissertation, we report on the corresponding beam dy- namics research conducted at Fermilab Accelerator Science and Technology facility (FAST) and Argonne Wakefield Accelerator (AWA). We demonstrate an experimental method for spatial laser and electron beam shaping using microlens arrays (MLAs) at a photoinjector facility. Such a setup was built at AWA and resulted in transverse emittance reduction by a factor of 2. We present transverse emittance partitioning methods that were recently employed at FAST facility. A strongly coupled electron beam was generated in an axial magnetic field and accelerated in 1.3 GHz SRF cavities to 34 MeV. It was then decoupled in Round-To-Flat beam transformer and beams with emittance asymmetry ratio of 100 were generated. We introduce the new methods of measuring electron beam canonical angular momentum, beam transformer optimization and beam image analysis. We also describe a potential longitudinal space-charge amplifier setup for FAST high-energy beamline. As an outcome, a broadband partially coherent radiation in the UV range could be generated.
