Book High Bridge Glens of Cuyahoga Falls

Download or read book High Bridge Glens of Cuyahoga Falls written by Mary L. McClure and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to its breathtaking waterfalls, mysterious caves, and thrilling roller coaster--rumored to be one of the first in the United States--the High Bridge Glens and Caves Park, located along the banks of the thundering Cuyahoga River, made the northeast Ohio community of Cuyahoga Falls one of the leading tourist destinations in the state in the late 1800s. At the height of its popularity, the park attracted more than 8,000 visitors per day. Guests ranged from future US president (then congressman) William McKinley to internationally known trapeze artists. Although reporters quickly dubbed the park "the Niagara of Ohio" and predicted it would become famous abroad, by the early 1900s the High Bridge Glens had faded into obscurity, ultimately leaving behind little evidence that it ever existed at all.

Book excerpt: The ruins of an industrial past provide the perfect haunting grounds in this spirited Ohio city. Run down the apparitions that float down Rubber City streets and façades like the shadow of a passing blimp. Stroll along forgotten canals amid the restless chatter and clank of spirits cut down before their hard lives became easier. Catch a show at the Civic Theater with a “former” engineer who prophesied that death wouldn’t keep him from work. A more restive spirit is that of John Tedrow, a twenty-something mauled and murdered during a drunken brawl in 1882; he wails for help and resolution. In this ghostly tour through Akron’s haunted and sometimes brutal past, paranormal specialist and historian Jeri Holland digs into the ghost tales and local legends that linger here like this city’s industrial heritage. “Haunted Akron is a tour of events, places and creepy legends.” —Ohio.com

Book Guide Book for the Tourist and Traveler Over the Valley Railway

Download or read book Guide Book for the Tourist and Traveler Over the Valley Railway written by John S. Reese and published by Kent State University Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Founded in 1871 by a group of entrepreneurs from Cleveland, Akron, and Canton, the Valley Railway paralleled the Cuyahoga River Valley, stretching from southeast Cleveland to Akron and then on to Canton and Valley Junction in Tuscarawas County. The Railway filled a need in the region by providing an important passenger rail link among the three cities and provided direct access to the coal fields in Stark and Tuscarawas Counties, supplying coal for Cleveland's iron mills and other growing industries. The Railway began operation in 1880, continued service until 1962, and was revived in the early 1970s. Construction of the Valley Railway coincided with a growing interest in travel and tourism in the United States. It was in the spirit of tourism and boosterism that John Reese wrote his Guide, which is the only primary-source account of the landscape and communities of the region in 1880. Reese discusses both the built environment - bridges, viaducts, trestles, and roadbeds - and natural features in plain view from the train and illustrates it all with thirty period engravings. In addition, the Guide is filled with advertisements for all sorts of tradesmen, merchants, and businesses t

Lodge in the 1870s, quickly grew to become one of northeast Ohio's most popular amusement parks. Thanks to its many exciting offerings, which included two roller coasters, a miniature railway, a merry-go-round, a dance pavilion, water toboggans, steamboat rides, live animal exhibits, and many other unique features, the park attracted up to 10,000 to 20,000 visitors a day from across Ohio and surrounding states. Always anxious to add new and thrilling attractions to the park, the Lodge family also introduced features described as the first public aquarium in the state of Ohio and the first aviation field in Summit County.
