Book Phenomenological Analysis of Higgs Boson Production Through Gluon Fusion in Association with Jets

This book was released on 2016 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this study, we present a detailed phenomenological analysis of the production of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with up to three jets. We consider the gluon fusion channel using an effective theory in the large top-quark mass limit. Higgs boson production in gluon fusion constitutes an irreducible background to the vector boson fusion (VBF) process; hence the precise knowledge of its characteristics is a prerequisite for any measurement in the VBF channel. The calculation is carried out at next-to-leading order (NLO) in QCD in a fully automated way by combining the two programs GoSam and Sherpa. We present numerical results for a large variety of observables for both standard cuts and VBF selection cuts. We find that for all jet multiplicities the NLO corrections are sizeable. This is particularly true in the presence of kinematic selections enhancing the VBF topology, which are based on vetoing additional jet activity. In this case, precise predictions for the background can be made using our calculation by taking the difference between the inclusive H+2 jets and the inclusive H+3 jets result.

Book Beyond Standard Model Collider Phenomenology of Higgs Physics and Supersymmetry

Download or read book Beyond Standard Model Collider Phenomenology of Higgs Physics and Supersymmetry written by Marc Christopher Thomas and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-08-01 with total page 113 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis studies collider phenomenology of physics beyond the Standard Model at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). It also explores in detail advanced topics related to Higgs boson and supersymmetry – one of the most exciting and well-motivated streams in particle physics. In particular, it finds a very large enhancement of multiple Higgs boson production in vector-boson scattering when Higgs couplings to gauge bosons differ from those predicted by the Standard Model. The thesis demonstrates that due to the loss of unitarity, the very large enhancement for triple Higgs boson production takes place. This is a truly novel finding. The thesis also studies the effects of supersymmetric partners of top and bottom quarks on the Higgs production and decay at the LHC, pointing for the first time to non-universal alterations for two main production processes of the Higgs boson at the LHC–vector boson fusion and gluon–gluon fusion. Continuing the exploration of Higgs boson and supersymmetry at the LHC, the thesis extends existing experimental analysis and shows that for a single decay channel the mass of the top quark superpartner below 175 GeV can be completely excluded, which in turn excludes electroweak baryogenesis in the Minimal Supersymmetric Model. This is a major new finding for the HEP community. This thesis is very clearly written and the introduction and conclusions are accessible to a wide spectrum of readers.

Book Full Mass Dependence in Higgs Boson Production in Association with Jets at the LHC and FCC

Download or read book Full Mass Dependence in Higgs Boson Production in Association with Jets at the LHC and FCC written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 39 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first computation of Higgs production in association with three jets at NLO in QCD has recently been performed using the effective theory, where the top quark is treated as an infinitely heavy particle and integrated out. This approach is restricted to the regions in phase space where the typical scales are not larger than the top quark mass. Here we investigate this statement at a quantitative level by calculating the leading-order contributions to the production of a Standard Model Higgs boson in association with up to three jets taking full top-quark and bottom-quark mass dependence into account. We find that the transverse momentum of the hardest particle or jet plays a key role in the breakdown of the effective theory predictions, and that discrepancies can easily reach an order of magnitude for transverse momenta of about 1 TeV. The impact of bottom-quark loops is found to be visible in the small transverse momentum region, leading to corrections of up to 5 percent. Lastly, we further study the impact of mass corrections when VBF selection cuts are applied and when the center-of-mass energy is increased to 100 TeV.

Book Supersymmetric Higgs Pair Production at Hadron Colliders

Download or read book Supersymmetric Higgs Pair Production at Hadron Colliders written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We study the pair production of neutral Higgs bosons through gluon fusion at hadron colliders in the framework of the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. We present analytical expressions for the relevant amplitudes, including both quark and squark loop contributions, and allowing for mixing between the superpartners of left- and right-handed quarks. Squark loop contributions can increase the cross section for the production of two CP--even Higgs bosons by more than two orders of magnitude, if the relevant trilinear soft breaking parameter is large and the mass of the lighter squark eigenstate is not too far above its current lower bound. In the region of large tan[beta], neutral Higgs boson pair production might even be observable in the 4b final state during the next run of the Tevatron collider.

Book Constraining Supersymmetric Models

Download or read book Constraining Supersymmetric Models written by Lisa Zeune and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-10-22 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis analyses how supersymmetric (SUSY) extensions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics can be constrained using information from Higgs physics, electroweak precision observables and direct searches for new particles. Direct searches for SUSY particles at the LHC have not resulted in any signal so far, and limits on the SUSY parameter space have been set. Measurements of the properties of the observed Higgs boson at 125 GeV as well as of the W boson mass can provide valuable indirect constraints, supplementing the ones from direct searches. Precise calculations are performed for Higgs decays and electroweak precision observables within the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model and the next to-minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model. Furthermore, a method is presented to reinterpret the LHC limits from direct SUSY searches in more realistic SUSY scenarios. The phenomenological consequences of those results are thoroughly analysed.

Book Phenomenology of the Higgs at the Hadron Colliders

Download or read book Phenomenology of the Higgs at the Hadron Colliders written by Julien Baglio and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis has been conducted in the context of one of the utmost important searches at current hadron colliders, that is the search for the Higgs boson, the remnant of the electroweak symmetry breaking. We wish to study the phenomenology of the Higgs boson in both the Standard Model (SM) framework and its minimal Supersymmetric extension (MSSM). After a review of the Standard Model in a first part and of the key reasons and ingredients for the supersymmetry in general and the MSSM in particular in a third part, we will present the calculation of the inclusive production cross sections of the Higgs boson in the main channels at the two current hadron colliders that are the Fermilab Tevatron collider and the CERN Large Hadron Collider (LHC), starting by the SM case in the second part and presenting the MSSM results, where we have five Higgs bosons and focusing on the two main production channels that are the gluon gluon fusion and the bottom quarks fusion, in the fourth part. The main output of this calculation is the extensive study of the various theoretical uncertainties that affect the predictions: the scale uncertainties which probe our ignorance of the higher-order terms in a fixed order perturbative calculation, the parton distribution functions (PDF) uncertainties and its related uncertainties from the value of the strong coupling constant, and the uncertainties coming from the use of an effective field theory to simplify the hard calculation. We then move on to the study of the Higgs decay branching ratios which are also affected by diverse uncertainties. We will present the combination of the production cross sections and decay branching fractions in some specific cases which will show interesting consequences on the total theoretical uncertainties. We move on to present the results confronted to experiments and show that the theoretical uncertainties have a significant impact on the inferred limits either in the SM search for the Higgs boson or on the MSSM parameter space, including some assessments about SM backgrounds to the Higgs production and how they are affected by theoretical uncertainties. One significant result will also come out of the MSSM analysis and open a novel strategy search for the Standard Higgs boson at the LHC. We finally present in the last part some preliminary results of this study in the case of exclusive production which is of utmost interest for the experimentalists.

Book NLO Higgs Boson Production Plus One and Two Jets Using the POWHEG BOX MadGraph4 and MCFM

Download or read book NLO Higgs Boson Production Plus One and Two Jets Using the POWHEG BOX MadGraph4 and MCFM written by and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 27 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present a next-to-leading order calculation of Higgs boson production plus one and two jets via gluon fusion interfaced to shower Monte Carlo programs, implemented according to the POWHEG method. For this implementation we have used a new interface of the POWHEG BOX with MadGraph4, that generates the codes for generic Born and real processes automatically. The virtual corrections have been taken from the MCFM code. We carry out a simple phenomenological study of our generators, comparing them among each other and with fixed next-to-leading order results.

Book NLO Corrections and Parton Shower Effects on Electroweak Higgs Production in Association with Two Jets

Download or read book NLO Corrections and Parton Shower Effects on Electroweak Higgs Production in Association with Two Jets written by Johannes Scheller and published by . This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While every particle predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics has been observed since the Higgs boson was finally discovered in 2012, researchers in the field continue to test the predictions by this very successful theory with enormous precision. Their hope is to be able to determine whether the Standard Model is actually the fundamental theory of the elementary particles, or whether it is part of a more comprehensive theory. Since its discovery, the properties of the Higgs boson and its various production channels have drawn special attention in the scientific community. This thesis focusses on one of these production modes, namely the electroweak production of a Higgs boson in association with two hard jets. This process is known for its high signal-to-background ratio and is expected to be particularly sensitive to the effects of new physics beyond the Standard Model. We present an implementation of this process in the publicly available framework of the POWHEG BOX RES. This implementation includes corrections at the next-to-leading order of both the strong as well as the electroweak coupling and can be matched to a so-called parton shower, therefore allowing for the calculation of exclusive distributions that can be compared to experimental results. Regarding the sub-process of vector boson fusion (VBF), we present the first calculation that allows for the matching of a parton shower with a precision calculation at the next-to leading order of the electroweak coupling. Furthermore, we do not rely on the widely used VBF approximation, which neglects contributions corresponding to the sub-process of Higgsstrahlung. We are thus able to perform precision calculations in a significantly larger part of the phase space than previous implementations in the POWHEG framework that were limited to the VBF approximation. Using our new implementation, one can calculate arbitrary kinematic distributions of the final state particles. In this thesis, this is demonstrated by a phenomenological study featuring selected important distributions. We thereby not only confirm the ability of our code to reproduce existing results at the next-to-leading order of the strong coupling, but we are also able to show the importance of corrections at next-to-leading order of the electroweak coupling. In contrast, the influence of a QED shower turns out to have only a mild influence.
