Book Higgs Boson Cross Section Measurements in the Diphoton Decay Channel in Proton proton Collisions at s

Download or read book Higgs Boson Cross Section Measurements in the Diphoton Decay Channel in Proton proton Collisions at s written by Ivan Konstantinovich Pogrebnyak and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation presents ATLAS measurements of the total and differential fiducial cross sections for the process of the Higgs boson production and subsequent decay to two photons. The analyzed dataset of proton-proton collisions at √s = 13 TeV has an integrated luminosity of 139 ifb and was collected during the Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider in 2015–2018. The cross sections were measured in a fiducial phase space closely matching the experimental selection, and compared to the Standard Model predictions from the state-of-the-art calculations. The differential cross sections were measured with respect to an array of observables, allowing us to probe the kinematics, jet activity, and spin and CP properties of the Higgs boson interactions. The data were analyzed iteratively, with yearly results from partial datasets presented at conferences and in publications. The inclusive fiducial cross section obtained from the analysis of the full Run 2 dataset is 65.2 ± 4.5 (stat.) ± 5.6 (exp.) ± 0.3 (theory) fb, which is in excellent agreement with the SM prediction of 63.5 ± 3.3 fb. The results provide the state-of-the-art experimental measurements of the Higgs boson production cross sections, and extend our confidence in the SM in the Higgs sector and QCD, as well as in the computational techniques used to obtain theoretical predictions.

Book Measurement of Higgs Boson Production Cross Sections in the Diphoton Channel

Download or read book Measurement of Higgs Boson Production Cross Sections in the Diphoton Channel written by Ahmed Tarek Abouelfadl Mohamed and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-12 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents the measurement of the Higgs boson cross section in the diphoton decay channel. The measurement relies on proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy √s = 13 TeV recorded by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). The collected data correspond to the full Run-2 dataset with an integrated luminosity of 139 fb-1. The measured cross sections are used to constrain anomalous Higgs boson interactions in the Effective Field Theory (EFT) framework. The results presented in this thesis represent a reduction by a factor 2 of the different photon and jet energy scale and resolution systematic uncertainties with respect to the previous ATLAS publication. The thesis details the calibration of electron and photon energies in ATLAS, in particular the measurement of the presampler energy scale and the estimation of its systematic uncertainty. This calibration was used to perform a measurement of the Higgs boson mass in the H → γγ and H → 4l channels using the 36 fb−1 dataset.

This book was released on 2022 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A measurement of inclusive and differential fiducial cross-sections for the production of the Higgs boson decaying into two photons is performed using 139 fb−1 of proton-proton collision data recorded at s√ = 13 TeV by the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. The inclusive cross-section times branching ratio, in a fiducial region closely matching the experimental selection, is measured to be 67 ± 6 fb, which is in agreement with the state-of-the-art Standard Model prediction of 64 ± 4 fb. Extrapolating this result to the full phase space and correcting for the branching ratio, the total cross-section for Higgs boson production is estimated to be 58 ± 6 pb. In addition, the cross-sections in four fiducial regions sensitive to various Higgs boson production modes and differential cross-sections as a function of either one or two of several observables are measured. All the measurements are found to be in agreement with the Standard Model predictions. The measured transverse momentum distribution of the Higgs boson is used as an indirect probe of the Yukawa coupling of the Higgs boson to the bottom and charm quarks. In addition, five differential cross-section measurements are used to constrain anomalous Higgs boson couplings to vector bosons in the Standard Model effective field theory framework

Book Measurement of Differential Cross Sections for Higgs Boson Production in the Diphoton Decay Channel in Pp Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Measurement of Differential Cross Sections for Higgs Boson Production in the Diphoton Decay Channel in Pp Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We presented a measurement of differential cross sections for the Higgs boson (H) production in pp collisions at √s = 8 TeV. The analysis exploits the H →[gamma][gamma] decay in data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1 collected by the CMS experiment at the LHC. The cross section is measured as a function of the kinematic properties of the diphoton system and of the associated jets. Results corrected for detector effects are compared with predictions at next-to-leading order and nextto-next-to-leading order in perturbative quantum chromodynamics, as well as with predictions beyond the standard model. Furthermore, for isolated photons with pseudorapidities.

Book Discovery and Measurement of the Higgs Boson in the WW Decay Channel

Download or read book Discovery and Measurement of the Higgs Boson in the WW Decay Channel written by David Hall and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-06-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis describes the stand-alone discovery and measurement of the Higgs boson in its decays to two W bosons using the Run-I ATLAS dataset. This is the most precise measurement of gluon-fusion Higgs boson production and is among the most significant results attained at the LHC. The thesis provides an exceptionally clear exposition on a complicated analysis performed by a large team of researchers. Aspects of the analysis performed by the author are explained in detail; these include new methods for evaluating uncertainties on the jet binning used in the analysis and for estimating the background due to associated production of a W boson and an off-shell photon. The thesis also describes a measurement of the WW cross section, an essential background to Higgs boson production. The primary motivation of the LHC was to prove or disprove the existence of the Higgs boson. In 2012, CERN announced this discovery and the resultant ATLAS publication contained three decay channels: gg, ZZ, and WW.

Book The Higgs from A mu to Z mu

Download or read book The Higgs from A mu to Z mu written by Bijan Perry Berton Haney (IV) and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis presents measurements of the Higgs boson inclusive and differential cross sections with 36.1 fb-1 of proton-proton collision data from the Large Hadron Collider at a center of mass energy of 13 TeV recorded with the ATLAS detector. The cross sections are measured in the fiducial phase space of the H ZZ* 4l (four lepton) decay channel as well as in the total Higgs phase space, combining data from the H ZZ* 4l and H [double gamma] (diphoton) decay channels. These two channels have high sensitivity to the Higgs signal and allow for full reconstruction of the Higgs boson kinematics. Unfolding techniques are used to correct for detector effects in the measurements, and comparisons are made to various state-of-the-art Standard Model theory predictions such as the predicted gluon-gluon fusion total cross section at N3LO and the Higgs differential transverse momentum spectrum at NNLO. These precision measurements are used to set limits on anomalous Higgs boson couplings beyond the Standard Model within the framework of pseudo-observables. In the H ZZ * 4l analysis, the inclusive fiducial Higgs boson cross section is measured to be 3.62 [plus/minus] 0.50 (stat) +0.25/-0.20 (sys) fb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of 2.91 [plus/minus] 0.13 fb. In the combined analysis, the inclusive total cross section is measured to be 57.0 +6.0/-5.9 (stat.) +4.0/-3.3 (syst.) pb, in agreement with the Standard Model prediction of of 55.6 [plus/minus] 2.5 pb. Measured differential cross sections are also presented for the Higgs transverse momentum, Higgs rapidity, number of associated jets, leading jet transverse momentum, and other kinematic variables.

Book Measurements of Higgs Boson Properties in Proton Proton Collisions at s 7 8 and 13 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider

Download or read book Measurements of Higgs Boson Properties in Proton Proton Collisions at s 7 8 and 13 TeV at the CERN Large Hadron Collider written by Ulascan Sarica and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-09-26 with total page 103 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis documents the measurement of lifetime, width, mass, and couplings to two electroweak bosons of the recently-discovered Higgs boson using data from the CMS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider. Both on-shell (at the mass of around 125 GeV) and off-shell (above 200 GeV) Higgs boson production is studied and an excess of off-shell production with significance above two standard deviations is observed for the first time. The latter is a qualitative new way to study the Higgs field, responsible for generation of mass of all the known elementary particles. In addition, phenomenological tools have been developed with the Monte Carlo event generator and matrix element techniques for an optional analysis of LHC data. Optimization of the CMS data with careful alignment of the silicon tracker is also presented.

Book ATLAS Measurements of the Higgs Boson Coupling to the Top Quark in the Higgs to Diphoton Decay Channel

Download or read book ATLAS Measurements of the Higgs Boson Coupling to the Top Quark in the Higgs to Diphoton Decay Channel written by Jennet Elizabeth Dickinson and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-16 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During Run 2 of the Large Hadron Collider, the ATLAS experiment recorded proton-proton collision events at 13 TeV, the highest energy ever achieved in a collider. Analysis of this dataset has provided new opportunities for precision measurements of the Higgs boson, including its interaction with the top quark. The Higgs-top coupling can be directly probed through the production of a Higgs boson in association with a top-antitop quark pair (ttH). The Higgs to diphoton decay channel is among the most sensitive for ttH measurements due to the excellent diphoton mass resolution of the ATLAS detector and the clean signature of this decay. Event selection criteria were developed using novel Machine Learning techniques to target ttH events, yielding a precise measurement of the ttH cross section in the diphoton channel and a 6.3 $\sigma$ observation of the ttH process in combination with other decay channels, as well as stringent limits on CP violation in the Higgs-top coupling.

Book Observation and Measurement of a Standard Model Higgs Boson like Diphoton Resonance with the CMS Detector

Download or read book Observation and Measurement of a Standard Model Higgs Boson like Diphoton Resonance with the CMS Detector written by Mingming Yang (Ph. D.) and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis concerns the observation of a new particle and the measurements of its properties, from the search of the Higgs boson through its decay into two photons at the CMS experiment at CERN's Large Hadron Collider (LHC), on the full LHC "Run I" data collected by the CMS detector during 2011 and 2012, consisting of proton-proton collision events at [square root of] s = 7 TeV with L = 5.1 fb-1 and at [square root of] s = 8 TeV with L = 19.7 fb-1, with the final calibration. In particular, an excess of events above the background expectation is observed, with a local significance of 5.7 standard deviations at a mass of 124.7 GeV, which constitutes the observation of a new particle through the two photon decay channel. A further measurement provides the precise mass of this new particle as 124.72+0.35 -0.36 GeV = 124.72+0.31 -0.32(stat)+0.16 -0.16(syst) GeV. Its total production cross section times two photon decay branching ratio relative to that of the Standard Model Higgs boson is determined as 1.12+0.26 -0.23 = 1.12+0.21 -0.21(stat)+0.15 -0.09(syst), compatible with the Higgs boson expectation. Further extractions of its properties relative to the Higgs boson, including the production cross section times decay branching ratios for separate Higgs production processes, couplings to bosons and to fermions, and effective couplings to the photon and to the gluon, are all compatible with the expectations for the Standard Model Higgs boson.

Book The Beauty and the Boost A Higgs Boson Tale

Download or read book The Beauty and the Boost A Higgs Boson Tale written by Brian Moser and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-09-19 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Precision measurements of the Higgs boson’s properties are a powerful tool to look for deviations from the predictions of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics. The 139/fb of proton-proton collision data which have been collected by the ATLAS experiment during Run 2 of the LHC, offer an opportunity to investigate rare Higgs-boson topologies, which are particularly sensitive to new physics scenarios but experimentally difficult to access. Several such measurements, which target Higgs-boson decays to heavy-flavour quarks, as well as their combinations are presented in this thesis. A novel analysis that measures Higgs-boson production in association with a heavy vector boson V (VH, with V=W,Z) at high energies is presented. Dedicated Higgs-boson reconstruction techniques are applied to reconstruct the highly Lorentz-boosted Higgs-boson decays into pairs of bottom quarks. The measurement is subsequently combined with a VH cross-section measurement at low and intermediate pT(V) to provide a differential cross-section measurement in kinematic fiducial volumes over the largest possible pT(V) range. All cross-section measurements agree with the SM predictions within relative uncertainties that range from 30% to 300%. The results are furthermore interpreted as limits on the parameters of a SM effective field theory. Finally, a combination of measurements of Higgs decays to heavy-flavour quarks is used to experimentally determine that the Higgs-boson coupling to charm quarks is weaker than to bottom quarks, as predicted by the SM. The target audience for the thesis are physicists and physics students, in particular those with a background in high energy physics.

Book Discovery of the Higgs Boson Measurements of Higgs Boson Properties and Search for High Mass Beyond the Standard Model Scalar Particle in the Diphoton Final State with the ATLAS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider

Download or read book Discovery of the Higgs Boson Measurements of Higgs Boson Properties and Search for High Mass Beyond the Standard Model Scalar Particle in the Diphoton Final State with the ATLAS Detector at the Large Hadron Collider written by Hongtao Yang and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With 4.8~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected at $\sqrt{s}=7~\rm{TeV}$ in 2011, and 5.9~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ collected at $\sqrt{s}=8~\rm{TeV}$ in 2012 by the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider, an excess of 4.5 standard deviations from the background-only hypothesis is observed near 126.5~GeV in the diphoton invariant mass spectra. Along with the excesses observed in the $H \rightarrow ZZ^{(*)}\rightarrow \ell\ell\ell\ell$ and $H \rightarrow WW^{(*)}\rightarrow \ell\nu\ell\nu$ channels, the observation of a Higgs-like particle is established at 6.0 standard deviations level. With more data accumulated during LHC Run~1, the measurements of Higgs boson couplings and mass in the $H\to\gamma\gamma$ channel are conducted by the ATLAS experiment based on 4.5~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collisions at $\sqrt{s}=7~\rm{TeV}$ collected in 2011, and 20.3~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ at $\sqrt{s}=8~\rm{TeV}$ collected in 2012. The combined signal strength, defined as number of observed Higgs boson decays to diphoton divided by the corresponding Standard Model prediction, is measured to be $1.17 \ ^{+0.28}_{-0.26}$ assuming the Higgs boson mass being 125.4~$\rm{GeV}$. The signal strengths for individual Higgs boson production processes are also measured, and are found to be in good consistency with the Standard Model. The mass of the Higgs boson is measured in $H\to\gamma\gamma$ channel by the ATLAS experiment to be $125.98 \pm 0.50$~\GeV. This measurement is combined with the ones from ATLAS $H \rightarrow ZZ^{(*)}\rightarrow \ell\ell\ell\ell$ as well as CMS $H\to\gamma\gamma$ and $H \rightarrow ZZ^{(*)}\rightarrow \ell\ell\ell\ell$. The Higgs boson mass measured from the combination is $125.09\pm0.24~\rm{GeV}$. With LHC center-of-mass energy increased to 13~TeV, a search for high mass Beyond the Standard Model scalar resonance is performed in the diphoton decay channel based on 15.4~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$ of proton-proton collision data collected by the ATLAS detector during 2015 and 2016. While a notable wide excess was first observed in the diphoton invariant mass spectrum from the 2015 data (3.2~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$) with mass near 750~GeV, it is not confirmed by the 2016 data with much higher statistics (12.4~$\rm{fb}^{-1}$). Limits on the production cross section times branching ratio of such resonances are set.
