Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a first-person account of growing up in rural, Central Arkansas during the 1950's, in an area that is now covered by Greer's Ferry Lake. The book gives a brief historical account of some of the pioneer families who migrated to the area in the mid- to late 1800's to homestead farms, when the entire area was completely untamed land and forests. The reader will meet some of the succeeding families who further carved out communities, through timber industry and family farms both on the hills and also in the river bottom land along the Little Red River. The author vividly describes the lifestyle and daily activities of those families -- everything from the work, to the school and church, as well as the play and fun. It's amazing to see such a close-knit community, even without telephones or internet. There was a very high level of community spirit and personal care for one another. It's also interesting to see that almost everything was recycled; there was no plastic used and very few machines. The reader will also get a glimpse of some of the emotional trauma that was experienced by some of the residents who were forced to relocate because of the construction of the dam and resulting lake. Overall, this book is both informative and entertaining as the author describes the people and activities in a bygone time and place.

Book Dickens and the Business of Death

Download or read book Dickens and the Business of Death written by Claire Wood and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2015-03-05 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Dickens is famous for his deathbed scenes, but these have rarely been examined within the context of his ambivalence towards the Victorian commodification of death. Dickens repeatedly criticised ostentatious funeral and mourning customs, and asserted the harmful consequences of treating the corpse as an object of speculation rather than sympathy. At the same time, he was fascinated by those who made a living from death and recognised that his authorial profits implicated him in the same trade. This book explores how Dickens turned mortality into the stuff of life and art as he navigated a thriving culture of death-based consumption. It surveys the diverse ways in which death became a business, from body-snatching, undertaking, and joint-stock cemetery companies, to the telling and selling of stories. This broad study offers fresh perspectives on death in The Old Curiosity Shop and Our Mutual Friend, and discusses lesser-known works and textual illustrations.

Book Dryden Selected Poems

Download or read book Dryden Selected Poems written by Paul Hammond and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-08-17 with total page 635 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dryden: Selected Poems is drawn from Paul Hammond and David Hopkins's remarkable five-volume The Poems of John Dryden, and includes a generous selection of his most important work. The great satires, MacFlecknoe and Absalom and Achitophel, are included in full, as are his religious poemsReligio Laici and The Hind and the Panther, along with a number of Dryden's translations from Horace, Ovid, Homer, and Chaucer. Each poem is accompanied by a headnote, which gives details of composition, publication, and reception. The first-rate annotations provide information on matters of interpretation and give details of allusions that might prove baffling to contemporary readers. Some 300 years after his death, Dryden: Selected Poems will enable new generations of readers to discover the poet of whom Eliot wrote: 'we cannot fully enjoy or rightly estimate a hundred years of English poetry unless we fully enjoy Dryden'.
