Book The Extended Hand

Download or read book The Extended Hand written by Marti Eicholz and published by eBookIt.com. This book was released on 2018-06-05 with total page 455 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Extended Hand is a "contemplative memoir" that covers two seemingly separate lives. When Robert answers the phone, he has trouble understanding his neighbor's question: "What do you mean, there's a notice in today's paper listing our condo for sale?" Through the kitchen windows, he can see the ocean waves rolling in toward the Maui beach. Surely there must be a mistake. But when he calls his wife Marti on the eastside of Seattle, he learns the truth: "Yes, I filed for bankruptcy." Once, as a child, Marti fell through an open manhole into a sewer and was rescued by the extended hand of a caring man. Now, even though her business mistakes have wiped out the assets of a thirty-year marriage, Marti Eicholz discovers that her husband is another man capable of extending a hand to someone in need. The Extended Hand is the first-person story of how I came to that point of having to tell the man I loved that I had lost all our worldly goods, without giving him a warning. Only in retrospect did I understand why I, the daughter of a charismatic fundamentalist preacher with a need to control his family, was driven to excel and perform perfectly. As an adult, I found it hard to love myself--when my first marriage ended, after ten years, I was still a virgin--and went into a web-based business venture when the Internet was still a novelty, unable to acknowledge that I was in an emotional black hole. My story is also that of one preacher's daughter who learns to accept the extended hand of the living Jesus cleansed of the rules and exclusions imposed on it by a narrow, fundamentalist view of the bible's truths. My marriage is alive and thriving today because I have finally learned to accept the gifts that are yours when someone extends their hand in love, and you accept it, in humility and gratitude.

Book excerpt: Shakespearean Tragedy brings together fifteen major contemporary essays on individual plays and the genre as a whole. Each piece has been carefully chosen as a key intervention in its own right and as a representative of an influential critical approach to the genre. The collection as a whole, therefore, provides both a guide and explanation to the various ways in which contemporary criticism has determined our understanding of the tragedies, and the opportunity for assessing the wider issues such criticism raises. The collection begins by considering the impact of social semiotics on approaches to the tragedies, before moving on to deal, in turn, with the various forms of Marxist criticism, New Historicism, Cultural Materialism, Feminism, Psychoanalysis, and Poststructuralism.

Book The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore

Download or read book The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore written by Benjamin Hale and published by Hachette+ORM. This book was released on 2010-11-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bruno Littlemore is quite unlike any chimpanzee in the world. Precocious, self-conscious and preternaturally gifted, young Bruno, born and raised in a habitat at the local zoo, falls under the care of a university primatologist named Lydia Littlemore. Learning of Bruno's ability to speak, Lydia takes Bruno into her home to oversee his education and nurture his passion for painting. But for all of his gifts, the chimpanzee has a rough time caging his more primal urges. His untimely outbursts ultimately cost Lydia her job, and send the unlikely pair on the road in what proves to be one of the most unforgettable journeys -- and most affecting love stories -- in recent literature. Like its protagonist, this novel is big, loud, abrasive, witty, perverse, earnest and amazingly accomplished. The Evolution of Bruno Littlemore goes beyond satire by showing us not what it means, but what it feels like be human -- to love and lose, learn, aspire, grasp, and, in the end, to fail.

Book The World of Prostitution in Late Imperial Austria

Download or read book The World of Prostitution in Late Imperial Austria written by Nancy Meriwether Wingfield and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2017 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study of prostitution addresses issues of female agency and experience, as well as contemporary fears about sexual coercion and the forced movement of girls/women, and police surveillance. Rather than treating prostitutes solely as victims or problems to be solved, as so often has been the case in much of the literature, Nancy M. Wingfield seeks to find the historical subjects behind fin-de-si cle constructions of prostitutes, to restore agency to the women who participated in commercial sex, illuminate their quotidian experiences, and to place these women, some of whom made a rational economic decision to sell their bodies, in the larger social context of late imperial Austria. Wingfield investigates the interactions of both registered and clandestine prostitutes with the vice police and other supervisory agents, including physicians and court officials, as well as with the inhabitants of these women's world, including brothel clients and madams, and pimps, rather than focusing top-down on the state-constructed apparatus of surveillance. Close reading of a broad range of primary and secondary sources shows that some prostitutes in late imperial Austria took control over their own fates, at least as much as other working-class women, in the last decades before the end of the Monarchy. And after 1918, bureaucratic transition did not necessarily parallel political transition. Thus, there was no dramatic change in the regulation of prostitution in the successor states. Legislation, which changed regulation only piecemeal after the war, often continued to incorporate forms of control, reflecting continuity in attitudes about women's sexuality.
